You're forgetting YouTube. It can't be that, because for last week's chart WIWYM was above S&T in the Youtube charts. The only possible explanation is that the ¨Complete My Album¨ negative sales of S&T were not counted towards the chart points, and that would have put S&T above WIWYM in the sales component.

Still that's a pretty big airplay start considering he only had one hit from Fortune. "Turn Up The Music" and "Don't Wake Me Up" makes up two. And the #3 R&B hit "Don't Judge Me". And "Strip" if that counts.

I was thinking of using "Stairway To Heaven" as an example, but I am not sure if it was ever played by Top 40 stations (the only stations Billboard surveyed for the HOT 100 until 1991). I know it was a huge hit on the FM Album rock stations that were so popular in the 1970s. It did get played on Top 40, or, at least, appeared on some stations' charts. You can see a sampling of Top 40 charts that reported the song here. Thanks for sharing the link, I didn't know this site existed!

Can someone please explain HOW IN HELL Suit & Tie was, last week, above (#3) WIWYM (#4), when it was: Airplay: going by this week's numbers and %, aprox Suit & Tie around 115 AI WIWYM around 131 AI Sales: aprox. Suit & Tie 100,000 WIWYM 215,000 Streaming: Suit & Tie 2.4 million WIWYM 4.6 million (aprox.) On-Demand: Suit & Tie 1.9 million WIWYM ?? (but it was at #4 in the chart, and #1 & #2 had 1.9 & 1.8 million respectively, so it couldn't have been less than 1 million). How Suit & Tie was above WIWYM when it was under in 3 of the chart components???? How much does On-Demand represents for the chart points???? The total streams # of 2.4 million you quote for "Suit & Tie" is the # for "Mirrors", the total streams for Suit & Tie is more than "When I Was Your Man" (#4 on the streaming chart vs. #6). On-demand streams are double the weight of passive streaming. It was 150 for on-demand and 300 for passive before YouTube videos were added. Not sure what the weightings are now (I have been using 400 & 200 as an estimate).

I find these changes fascinating! Very excited to see what genre will take over top 40 next. We are in the calm before a new era at Radio. It will be interesting to see which artist starts a new movement.

Both were already seen as incredibly generic at the time. pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pop&action=display&thread=113915&page=1Just a quick browse through the first page shows that.

Now that I think about it, wasn't MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" a limited single back in 1990? Yes. Mariah, like R&B, is a popular scapegoat here. :'( UCTT was only released as a 12 inch single. Mariah is a popular scapegoat here because she discounted single after single after single. It wasn't just one...

It wasn't just one... Which ones? I only recall Loverboy being mass discounted to 49 cents. That one can certainly be proved since it made the news and gossip sites. I also thought it was a Columbia startegy during those early 00's. I believe Bootylicious was also heavily discounted when it charting.

I was just looking through the digital chart, and (rounded): Rank - Artist - Title - Sales TW - % Change - Sales LW - Total Sales 12 TIMBERLAKE*JUSTIN MIRRORS 118000 -591 -24000 481000 Wow at the -24k last week! It lost presumably ~140k due to Complete My Album. Also lol at the percentage change being -591 despite it having 142k more this week than last week. I know it's technically correct but it still feels wrong.

UCTT was only released as a 12 inch single. Mariah is a popular scapegoat here because she discounted single after single after single. It wasn't just one... Which ones? I only recall Loverboy being mass discounted to 49 cents. That one can certainly be proved since it made the news and gossip sites. I also thought it was a Columbia startegy during those early 00's. I believe Bootylicious was also heavily discounted when it charting. It's really irrelevant because in most of those cases the album was selling well and most of those singles had good airplay. Actually it was a smart business move to get the high Hot 100 placement and let the album continue to accumulate steady sales. The label could've easily not released any singles to help boost album sales, but you don't hear people here mentioning that, while numerous other acts tried that strategy and it worked for them. I remember in the 90s numerous artists discounting their singles but certain people here are only like to mention Mariah because she got #1 singles and others didn't because they supposedly didn't discount their single(s). I remember seeing Janet's 'Again' being on sale for 49 cents and that helped it get to #1. It was smart move by her Virgin label to discount it because when I saw it on sale it was during the holiday season while it was stalling in the top 10, but had been on the charts for months.

Discounts usually are smart moves if the goal is to sell stuff

People complain about "Loverboy" because it's #2 peak seemed ridiculous compared to "Bootylicious," which seemed like a 'deserving' #1. They were both heavily discounted in the race for #1 though.

Not being a fan (far from it), I thought I would never post comments in support of Mariah Carey. Although some of her hits have been deeply discounted, others have been discontinued at the height of their popularity, resulting in fewer weeks at #1. I am thinking specifically of "I'll Be There" in 1992 (I believe less than 500,000 were produced) and "Fantasy" in 1995.

It does not matter what the price is. People still need to like it enough to buy it.

^Exactly because I'm not buying any single even if it's 1 cent if I don't like it.

It does not matter what the price is. People still need to like it enough to buy it. That's a bad way to look at it. Say there are 2 songs. 500,000 people like Song A, and 200,000 buy it full price. 400,000 people like Song B, and 250,000 buy it because it's cheap. Sure, everyone that bought it likes it, but the first song that was sold at full price is still more popular, and probably made more money too.

that may be true, but it DOES increase sales. Yes, it does Someone might not be able to afford a $2.99 cassette single, but can afford 49 cents.

Yes, Tommy Motola did not want Mariah to be #1 on the Hot 100 that week. He discounted Bootylicious to get back at Mariah.

^ I'm not ashamed to say I was deliriously happy when Bootylicious hit #1. That's one of my all-time favorites, and made me a permanent fan of Beyonce. I got my co-workers so sick of that song.
