his new single is a piece of crap
it will flop
i thought he is an educated guy who knows what he does but this is not the case
his new song sounds like a cheap parody of GS
of course the first days people will watch the video but then they will lose interest

Considering it's only #18 on iTunes most of the views are probably not from the US....he's selling way better in a lot of other countries (it's Top 10 in Netherlands, the UK, Switzerland, Canada to name a few).
With a bit of luck he *might* manage a Top 10 debut....but they really should have released the video on Monday to capitalize on a full week.

Avril Lavigne's latest was #10 by that time (if my memory serves me right), and she has not had a major hit in eons. Youtube weighting (all passive listening weights for that matter) should not be the near 20x that of radio airplay it is now, it really skews the HOT100's results. BB"s release of the HOT 100 results on Wednesday should be more interesting then usual.

oh, YouTube...making the Hot 100 much trickier to predict! I think the uncertainty of it all is a bit fun though, eh? ;)
personally, I'd prefer to see P!nk on top this week, and then PSY can take over next week. once "Gentleman" fizzles out (if sales don't pick up and it ends up relying almost exclusively on streaming points, that shouldn't take TOO long), I wouldn't mind watching "Can't Hold Us" and "Mirrors" duke it out for a while. maybe "Stay" can sneak in a discount-fueled week on top sometime too...?

If PSY gets #1 the week after next, it'll be the first dance song to get to #1 on the Hot 100 since We Found Love about 15 months ago!

You may not agree with the percentage breakdowns in their formula, but we live in a world now where the people clamoring for ONLY an airplay Hot 100 or ONLY a sales Hot 100 are looking more and more out of touch.

I think one of the big issues is how much weight user-submitted videos carry on YouTube. Official videos (whether label-uploaded or not) and/or artist performances should carry more weight than, say, a video I put up of me doing "The Chicken Dance."

So if someone puts up an unofficial lyric video and it gets 230 million views, it shouldn't count because it's not official? Most unofficial videos are lyric videos, since covers/parodies don't count.

I am looking forward to Billboard's spin if "Gentleman" debuts at #1. Unlike the rest of the world, it still has not managed to get into the top 10 on Itunes in the US. "Harlem Shake" was a more immediate sales success. Not sure if "Gentleman" is available for on-demand streaming in the US, but an out-of-the-box high placement on the on-demand chart would give further evidence of its' popularity (as opposed to its' notoriety).

That's a crazy amount of views for a lyric video (remember that all of that wouldn't be U.S., anyhow).
Let me expand- I think any audio should carry more weight than videos where the song is used in the background, and/or features acts other than the performer who recorded it. How's that? :)

So if someone puts up an unofficial lyric video and it gets 230 million views, it shouldn't count because it's not official? Most unofficial videos are lyric videos, since covers/parodies don't count. If it is the whole song and it is not violating any copyright laws, then it should count. I sometimes watch the lyric only videos on YouTube if I like the lyrics of a song (that is rare, I think most lyrics are s**t, my brain usually interprets the voice as another instrument). I personally would not weight YouTube views and other passive streaming more than 3x radio airplay. Even so 20 million YouTube views would still equal 8,000 chart points, which is 96,000 downloads, or 60 million AI on radio. YouTube is a popular way to consume music, but the vast majority of people of all ages still consume music through the radio (usually in the car or at work).

I will laugh and love it if Gentlemen debuts at #1. It will be a much worse travesty than Harlem Shake debuting at #1. It will be a joke and ridiculous even if it debuts in the top 5 tho. Billboard has officially jumped the shark.

The Billboard spin will be hilarious if "Gentlemen" as #1 happens. I am cool with Youtube counting for the Hot 100 but the formula needs some adjustments (as do the other genre charts but that's a whole other rant). What would have been really funny is if "When I Was Your Man" had been discounted to get the #1 for this chart week, only to be thwarted by PSY.

I do wonder how long it will be before Billboard announces yet another chart adjustment. Weeks? Months? Until the next Billboard chart year begins?

I think it'd be funny if the Hot 100 this week was something like:
1. TS 2. WIWYM 3. Gentleman 4. JGMAR

Worse than Harlem Shake being #1 how? To my mind it is worse because Harlem Shake came out of nowhere to peak at #2 in its' first week, while "Gentleman" is still trying to get into the top 10. "Gentleman" though does not have the benefit of the 30 second memes that "Harlem Shake" had. I don't think a song has ever debuted at #1 on the HOT100 without at least a top 3 placing on the sales chart. "Gentleman" could be the first.
