A song by the youngest artist (to date) to top the Hot 100 was subsequently replaced by one of the most chauvinistic #1 songs of all time. But back in 1963, there wasn't much concern or outrage over it, it was truly a different time. Anyway, here is the Billboard Top 10 for exactly 50 years ago this week: May 18, 1963 1 3 If You Wanna Be Happy - Jimmy Soul (1 wk at #1) 2 1 I Will Follow Him - Little Peggy March 3 2 Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul & Mary 4 7 Surfin' U.S.A. - Beach Boys 5 6 Foolish Little Girl - The Shirelles 6 4 Pipeline - Chantay's 7 10 Losing You - Brenda Lee 8 9 Reverend Mr. Black - The Kingston Trio 9 5 I Can't Get Used To Losing You - Andy Williams 10 23 I Love You Because - Al Martino What about Stevie Wonder? That's why I said "to date." ;)

And it returns, the period where anything everyone ever says about anything will be interpreted as being negative toward Mariah with the response "u m@d?" or something similarly defensive and annoying.

And it returns, the period where anything everyone ever says about anything will be interpreted as being negative toward Mariah with the response "u m@d?" or something similarly defensive and annoying. I think the best one I've seen so far (can't remember in which thread) was someone making a reasonable comment on how they find Clear Channel deals to be unfair, particularly for charting purposes, acknowledging that Mariah isn't the only one to have benefitted from them...to which the first response was someone simply saying "b*tch bye". it's great that people are passionate about their favorite artists, but it's really unfortunate when defensive stanning stifles interesting, thoughtful discussions.

It goes both ways...there are people clearly trolling. but if it goes both ways, wouldn't it be even better for the Mariah fans to take "the high road" and not respond in an equally petty way? trolls are obnoxious and frustrating, no doubt...but allowing a thread to turn into a back-and-forth insult/catty GIF-fest is even worse.

I may have exaggerated that just a tad but it feels like I've seen quite a lot of " U M@D?", "B*tch Bye!"-type GIF's in the "#Beautiful" and "#Beautiful"-related threads. I'm just saying it's better to not respond to trolls at all than respond with a catty remark or GIF. I certainly didn't mean to insinuate every Mariah fan behaves like every anti-Mariah troll...especially since I consider myself a Mariah fan.

I was the one who used the "u mad" gif(on this thread), and it was nothing to go crazy about.
Anyhow, I get what you're saying.

...but gifs are so much fun.
I can't ignore posts, so if I have to read them when they're reported, at least a well-used gif in response makes it more pleasant. (I do agree that it's annoying when overzealous stans do that in response to posts that clearly aren't trolling, just not absolutely slobbering over the artist in question.)

It might go both ways but it's particularly noticeable during Mariah-season.

I'm just thrilled that 24 years later she is making big moves on the charts, not many if any of today's pop stars will be able to say that or endure. After the usual drop next week something tells me this will be end up being a major hit for her. Watching how this board reacted to Suit & Tie a R&B flavored song ....will be funny and pretty explosive to watch the girls lose their heads in the upcoming weeks.

I've been saying for what seems like the entire year that S&T is still an aberration, but after hearing that song, "Fine China," and "#Beautiful" within 30 minutes of each other on my pop station, and with "The Way" making consistent gains, maybe it's time to give the word aberration a rest.

Digital Songs Update:Over on the Digital Songs chart, things are pretty static in the top 10, as the entire top three are non-movers, while only one title moves into the top 10. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" is steady at No. 1 again (262,000; up 1%), as is P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason" (featuring Nate Ruess) at No. 2 (255,000; up 1%) and Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" at No. 3 (176,000; up 1%). Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" is up one slot to No. 4 (145,000; up 6%), Rihanna's "Stay" (featuring Mikky Ekko) is down a rung to No. 5 (140,000; down 14%) and Icona Pop's "I Love It" rises 7-6 (136,000; up 2%). Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" slips 6-7 (134,000; down 1%), Macklemore & Lewis' "Thrift Shop" is stationary at No. 8 (117,000; down 11%) and Selena Gomez's "Come & Get It" hits the top 10 for the first time, climbing 14-9 with 115,000 (up 27%). Closing out the top 10 is Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," descending one position to No. 10 with 109,000 (down 6%). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.17 million downloads, down 1% compared with last week (24.34 million) and down 5% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (25.41 million). Year to date track sales are at 482.49 million, down 3% compared to the same total at this point last year (495.40 million). www.billboard.com/articles/news/1560807/kenny-chesney-logs-lucky-seventh-no-1-album-on-billboard-200

Watching how this board reacted to Suit & Tie a R&B flavored song ....will be funny and pretty explosive to watch the girls lose their heads in the upcoming weeks. Everytime an artist premieres a non-dance song (especially if it's urban-styled), you get the same comments from the pop fans: "Is this a promo single?" "Boring" "She needs to go away for a while and come back with something better" "This won't be the hit he needs" "I can't wait for the proper lead single" But I agree, watching the reactions to the initial premiere of Suit & Tie, and then the reactions when it didn't flop, was quite funny. I thought the melt-downs when Diamonds premiered was bad, but Suit & Tie was a whole other level. I've been saying for what seems like the entire year that S&T is still an aberration, but after hearing that song, "Fine China," and "#Beautiful" within 30 minutes of each other on my pop station, and with "The Way" making consistent gains, maybe it's time to give the word aberration a rest. We've got Treasure by Bruno Mars coming soon as well.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' 'Can't Hold Us' Tops Hot 100The act becomes the first duo in the chart's five-decade history to send its first two singles to No. 1. Plus, Florida Georgia Line's 'Cruise' sails into the top 10 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us," featuring Ray Dalton, rises 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the pair's second leader. With prior hit "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz, having reigned for six nonconsecutive weeks, the act is the first duo to take its first two singles to No. 1 in the Hot 100's almost-55-year history. (Following "Shop," "Hold," which is scaling pop, rhythmic and R&B/hip-hop formats, debuted the same week as the twosome's "Same Love," featuring Mary Lambert, which is being promoted only to alternative radio. "Love," which, like the other two songs, is from the duo's debut album "The Heist," lifts 30-26 on Alternative Songs and 94-83 on the Hot 100 this week.) Among all artists, Macklemore & Lewis is the first act to send its first two charted Hot 100 singles to No. 1 since Lady Gaga arrived with "Just Dance" (three weeks on top) and "Poker Face" (one) in 2009. Bruno Mars, meanwhile, ruled with his first two entries as a lead act ("Just the Way You Are," "Grenade") in 2010-11 after he'd spent two weeks at No. 1 in his first visit as a featured artist on B.o.B's "Nothin' On You" and then peaked at No. 4 as a guest vocalist on Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" in 2010. "Hold" hits No. 1 on the Hot 100 fueled in part by logging a second week atop the Digital Songs chart, increasing by 1% to 262,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It leads the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs survey for a third frame; remains bulleted at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (on which "Shop" reigns for a seventh week), garnering 6.1 million streams (up 6%), according to Nielsen BDS; and rises 6-5 on Radio Songs (111 million all-format audience impressions, up 19%, according to BDS). "Hold" racks a third week at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The track crowns the Hot 100 by dethroning P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason," featuring fun.'s Nate Ruess, after three weeks. ("Hold" increases by 6% in overall Hot 100 points, while "Reason" declines by less than 1%.) "Reason" rises 3-2 on Radio Songs (136 million, up 8%); stays at No. 2 after leading Digital Songs for four weeks (255,000, up 1%); and drops 5-6 on Streaming Songs (4.1 million, down 14%). With its latest sales frame, "Reason" passes 2 million downloads sold to date, becoming P!nk's sixth single to reach the milestone. Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" (5-3) is the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer for a third consecutive week. The cut lifts 5-3 on Radio Songs (119 million, up 23%), while remaining at No. 3 on Digital Songs (176,000, up 1%; it slips 9-11 on Streaming Songs (3.6 million, down 10%). Its latest sales week pushes "Mirrors" past 1 million downloads sold since its release. Rihanna's "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko, dips from its No. 3 peak on the Hot 100 to No. 4, although it controls Radio Songs for a second week (136 million, up 1%). Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" rebounds 6-5 on the Hot 100 after leading the list four weeks ago. Macklemore & Lewis' "Shop" slides 4-6 on the Hot 100, ahead of Icona Pop's debut hit "I Love It," featuring Charli XCX (9-7). The track charges 14-10 on Radio Songs (63 million, up 16%); 7-6 on Digital Songs (136,000, up 2%); and 23-21 on Streaming Songs (2.3 million, up 8%). It also takes over atop the Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" climbs 10-8 on the Hot 100 (after reaching No. 7 five weeks ago). It commands Hot Rock Songs for a seventh week. Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" is the Hot 100's lone new top 10 entry, navigating 13-9 in its 36th week, tying Creed's "Higher" (1999-2000) for the second-longest ascent to the top tier. Only Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" (38 weeks, 2006-07) took longer. "Cruise" reaches the top 10 by following a patter similar to that of "Cheats": drawing pop crossover success after first becoming a country hit. ("Higher," meanwhile, won pop and adult radio support after starting at rock.) "Cruise" topped Country Airplay for three weeks in December. Since remixed with vocals by Nelly, its rises 21-18 on Pop Songs and 32-26 on Adult Pop Songs this week. The track tallies a 10th nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the airplay/sales/streaming-based Hot Country Songs chart (including the last five; its first five were in December/January at the zenith of its country airplay popularity). Florida Georgia Line's follow-up, "Get Your Shine On," meanwhile, concurrently climbs 2-1 on Country Airplay. The act is the first to top Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay simultaneously with different titles since the former chart adopted its hybrid methodology in October. Pitbull's "Feel This Moment," featuring Christina Aguilera, rounds out the Hot 100's top 10, descending from its No. 8 peak to No. 10. Also notably, while it falls just short of the Hot 100, Mariah Carey's "#Beautiful," featuring Miguel," soars onto Radio Songs at No. 44. The track, which previews her 13th studio album, due this summer, starts with 31 million impressions after just two days of airplay. It should make an impressive debut on next week's Hot 100 after its first full week of sales, along with its streaming data, are added to next week's Hot 100 tabulation.Check Billboard.com tomorrow (May 9), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and Digital Songs, Radio Songs, Streaming Songs and On-Demand Songs will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday. www.billboard.com/articles/news/1560817/macklemore-ryan-lewis-cant-hold-us-tops-hot-100

Didn't "Cruise" reach top ten a few weeks ago? That part of the longest climb is not right then.

Yay at "Can't Hold Us" #1 :) I think it'll block "Mirrors".
"Cruise" will be a huge hit when all is said and done, already 3 million in sales and the single is still hot, I heard it every day on the radio. :o

I was thinking about the same after the first read. They should not make up achievements if they don't know their own stuff. Oh and congratz to CHU even if it was expected. Wow, I think JGMAR will sell 3.5 - 4 million. That's a lot for her. Just look at her single sales.

Based on my rough calculations:
1. Can't Hold Us ~ 54,500 points; 2. Just Give Me A Reason ~ 50,000 points; 3. Mirrors ~ 40,000 points.
MIrrors still has some growth potential at radio, but its' sales and streaming activity seemed to have lost momentum. "Can't Hold Us" may have a lengthy stay at #1 since it is doing very well on all 3 component charts.
Mariah Carey missed debuting on the HOT 100 despite garnering more than 4,000 chart points. "Beautiful" will likely debut in the top 10 next week, maybe even the top 5.
