Well... this is a little embarrassing. Matt here, probably known by some of you in this forum as the longtime compiler of the Pulse 100 (which was called the R&R 100 back when we made the R&R message boards our home). I gave up control of the chart several years ago, then last year I decided to make a grand comeback... only to drop off the face of the Pulse planet 2 or 3 months later. What had happened was... I ended up taking a second job due to financial concerns and ended up with basically zero time to post, let alone compile the Pulse 100. But one constant during my nearly year-long hiatus (that I am only now beginning to come out from) is that I still compiled my own personal chart. Except for 2 interruptions that lasted a couple of months each, I've been making it faithfully each week since the middle of 2001 (and usually posted it every week here). But I miss feeling like my taste in music actually matters to anyone, so I thought I'd start posting my charts here again. A little about my chart. Size: My chart has ranged from 20 to 100 positions in its life, but has mostly been 50. Genre lean: Alternative tracks and artists have historically done the best here, but especially in the past few years, pop and hip-hop have created a strong presence. Longevity: In the earlier years of my chart, a #1 hit would be expected to last an average of 20-22 weeks (with a record low of 14). For unknown reasons, that number has increased substantially. Last year, my average #1 hit charted for 27-28 weeks in the top 50. This week, 4 songs are in their 29th week or greater, and all of them are still in my top 30 (whereas that may have been a yearly total of 29+ week hits in the past). There are also fewer charting songs overall than in previous years. Ranking method: I don't use weekly plays, "points" or any other method other than my subjective ranking. Got it? OK, great! Now on to the charts.

Chart Notes:- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are #1 for the 10th (non-consecutive) week with "Can't Hold Us". This ties the all-time record set in 2011 by The Joy Formidable's "Whirring", but there's a very good chance "CHU" will break the record next week. The record for consecutive weeks at #1 remains 9, held by Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life". Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been #1 for 18 of the past 21 weeks, on the heels of the 8 weeks "Thrift Shop" spent on top (a run ended by "Can't Hold Us"). "Same Love" was the duo's first #1 hit in 2012, spending 4 weeks on top, and 2 other tracks from The Heist have made the top 20 ("Ten Thousand Hours" and "Jimmy Iovine").
- Half of the top 10 are by artists celebrating their first top-10 hit: Young Guns, The Lumineers, Twenty One Pilots, The Weeknd, and Capital Cities. The rest range from relative newcomers (Ellie Goulding, notching her third top-10 after "Lights" and "Anything Could Happen") to possibly the most successful act in chart history. In 2008, Anberlin managed to chart 7 tracks from its album New Surrender in my top 20 simultaneously... and monopolized the top 5. That's right, they matched The Beatles' famous Billboard Hot 100 feat on my chart.
lw TW 01 01 Anberlin "Breaking" 02 02 Anberlin "The Resistance" 05 03 Anberlin "Blame Me! Blame Me!" 06 04 Anberlin "Haight St." 03 05 Anberlin "The Feel Good Drag" 04 06 Paramore "That's What You Get" 17 07 Snow Patrol "Take Back the City" 09 08 Kid Rock "All Summer Long" 11 09 Estelle f/Kanye West "American Boy" 15 10 Kanye West f/Chris Martin "Homecoming" 08 11 Carolina Liar "I'm Not Over" 07 12 Shinedown "Devour" 13 13 Anberlin "Misearbile Visu (Ex Malo Bonum)" 12 14 Paramore "Let the Flames Begin" 10 15 Coldplay "Viva la Vida" 18 16 Mainstay "Become Who You Are" 20 17 Anberlin "Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)" 14 18 Ne-Yo "Closer" -- 19 Jonathan Davis f/Jim Root "Got Money" 16 20 Colby O'Donis f/Akon "What You Got"
19 -- September "Cry For You" - But since then, they were in a precipitous downfall. 2010's Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place featured a #1 hit in "Impossible", then the minimal top-10 "Closer"... and that was it. Their most recent album Vital has fared even worse, with lead single "Someone Anyone" only managing #33 (a flop that would have been unthinkable even 3 years ago). But album track "Other Side" (that I first heard when I went to a show of theirs in March) has Anberlin on the brink of their first top-5 hit in 3 years.
- Fall Out Boy appear on the way to their first top-10 hit since 2007's "Thnks fr th Mmrs". Nero spends a 5th week at #20 with "Crush On You", the third top-20 hit from their disc Welcome Reality. All three have been slow burners; "Promises" and "Me & You" each lasted 30 weeks in the top 50 with #4 and #7 peaks, respectively.
- Artists in the top 30 making their debut chart appearance include Young Guns (#2 with "Bones"); Twenty One Pilots; The Weeknd; Capital Cities; The Neighbourhood; Benny Benassi; A$AP Rocky; Kendrick Lamar (his first feature and first lead appearance came 2 weeks apart, and both are still charting within the top 20); Florida-Georgia Line (who is charting with the original version of "Cruise", NOT the Nelly remix); Trinidad James; Jonn Hart; Atlas Genius; and surprisingly enough, Daft Punk. "Get Lucky" has all the makings of a top-5 summer smash, and Florida-Georgia Line looks like a sure thing for the top 10.
- Jimmy Eat World notch their (estimated) 16th top 40 hit with "I Will Steal You Back". They've been one of the most consistent acts ever on my chart, with six #1 hits spread across four albums: "The Middle", "Sweetness", "Pain", "Work", "Big Casino", and "My Best Theory". Among the tracks that just missed are "A Praise Chorus", "Always Be", "Firefight", and "Coffee and Cigarettes". But a song that peaked lower than all those tracks may be my favorite of all. 2004's Futures contains a track toward the end called "Polaris". In a time when album tracks rarely charted, this inched its way into the top 10 as the de facto 4th single in early 2006. Indeed, the chart run split between years left it in the lower rungs of both 2005 and 2006's year-end charts. But repeated plays only increased its prestige in my mind, and its #15 decade-end (2000-2009) ranking is the highest of any JEW song.
- 30 Seconds to Mars have the highest (higher) of 2 new entries with "Up In The Air". It will have a long way to go to become their 7th top-10 hit.

18 weeks on top for Macklemore?? :O I approve! He's benefited from an unprecedented confluence of events on my chart. First, he's a local hero. I've lived in 4 areas during the time of my personal chart: Mobile, AL; Auburn, AL; Chicago; and Seattle. Besides Chicago (although several acts have come out of the city, it's ironically too large to have a city coalesce around support of one local boy/band made good), each city has influenced the success of one artist on my chart. Mobile had the C-City Ryderz, whose "Vibrate" hit the top 20 back in the mid-2000s; and Auburn (and nearby Montgomery) radio played Course of Nature's "Caught In The Sun" heavily on its way to top-10 rock and top-30 pop success (and a #2 finish on my 2002 year-end chart). But Seattle has a love affair with Macklemore, who has been popular here for years before making it big nationally. I never expected "Thrift Shop" to become nearly the hit it's been, let alone "Can't Hold Us" on top of that. So that's helped some as well. But I got on the songs with the perfect timing to still be big nationwide before burning out on them too early. And of course, it doesn't hurt that either are great, catchy tunes.

Chart Notes:- "Can't Hold Us" lost more ground this week than at any time in its chart run (partially thanks to being fresh off seeing Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in concert in time for last week's chart), but it holds on to set a new record with 11 weeks at #1. Interestingly, the song that looks like the next #1 is "Bones", not "Stubborn Love". This comes from a combination of "Bones" getting a slight second wind and "Stubborn Love" slowing down some.
- "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" now has to be looked at as a dark-horse #1 candidate. Any of the top 5 songs right now are #1-worthy, but below that and down to Daft Punk at #18, FOB have the most forward momentum.
- In this relatively new era of songs with extreme longevity, a 16-week-old song is considerably fresher than one with 30 weeks. Thus explains The Neighbourhood's return to the top 10 after they had fallen 10-13 three weeks ago.
- After I pretty much ignored "All Gold Everything" for over a month upon adding it into my Spotify rotation, the ridiculous Trinidad James track looks like a good bet to join the two Urban tracks that paved the way before ("Fuckin' Problems" and "Swimming Pools") in the top 10. It appears that Jonn Hart's "Who Booty" won't join the party, though.
- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have now charted 40% of The Heist (pretty impressive when you consider it's a 15-track album) as "Make The Money" enters at #44. Macklemore also charted last year without Ryan; "American" hit #32 while "Same Love" was approaching the top spot. Icona Pop can't be denied anymore, despite its dubious lyrics; and Depeche Mode's "Heaven" makes a debut that would have been totally unexpected even a month ago.
Next up: The Henningsens - American Beautiful Mumford & Sons - Lover Of The Light AWOLNATION - Thiskidsnotalright Lil Wayne f/Drake & Future - Love Me New Politics - Harlem Phoenix - Entertainment

ANY chart that has "Unsustainable" on it is a winner, and that's just the tip of the iceberg here!

Nice #1 :) LOL at Trinidad James being so high, but nice to see "Get Lucky", "Harlem", and "Royals" in the Top 10 :) Also great to see "Your Touch", "Still Into You", "Wake Me Up", "Clarity", "Blurred Lines", "Pompeii", "Stompa", and "Came Back Haunted" rising :) I hope Kendrick, A$AP Rocky, WOTE, Ellie, and FOB debut

You have an awesome taste for music! FKARND (I just like to call it F**k Around (All Night)) at 2 and "Holding Onto You" a former number one? Sweet.

8/23: Pepper holds for a 3rd week at #1 but is imminently threatened by MS MR and Lorde. Can one or both get to the top, followed by The Naked And Famous to make potentially 3 straight #1s with female lead vocals?
This week looks to be the last for "Can't Hold Us". Although it will fall short of the all-time record of 52 weeks in combined chart runs by Mute Math's "Typical", its 46 weeks on chart is a record for a consecutive run... by 6 weeks. Previous record holders: - Evanescence f/Paul McCoy "Bring Me To Life" (2003, 40 weeks) - Ellie Goulding, "Lights" (2012, 40 weeks)

Just got into "FKARND" (except it's apparently now "F**k Around (All Night)" everywhere??), but solid top three! Nice assortment of radio flops in there too (poor Blake Lewis).

Just got into "FKARND" (except it's apparently now "F**k Around (All Night)" everywhere??), but solid top three! Nice assortment of radio flops in there too (poor Blake Lewis). It can be either or. I'm pretty sure it was originally FKARND but somehow they might of changed it or something.

The video is named "F**k Around (All Night)" (and there's a clean "Mess Around (All Night)" )

Yeah, I might have to change its title on my chart too. For practical purposes, it's an awful title, and my copy of "FKARND" on Spotify doesn't work anymore (only the one titled "F**k Around (All Night)" works now).

8/30/13: Pepper surprises by holding on for a 4th week at #1, and on top of that, MS MR may have missed its chance at the top.
"Demons" tumbles 23-37, one short of the largest position fall of the year (26-41 by M83's "Steve McQueen" in March). Smallpools beat out several other candidates for #50, including (in no particular order): Kaskade - Atmosphere Family Of The Year - St. Croix Robin Thicke f/Kendrick Lamar - Give It 2 U Fall Out Boy - The Phoenix Trinidad James - Female$ Welcomed

Administrator evading the censors. Tisk tisk. *reported* How do you rank "White Walls" against the other M&RL singles? At first I was meh when it was announced but listening to it lately I'm really loving it!
