What's bad is the haters staying perched in her threads to point these silly things out. Although the title may be misleading, this isn't "her thread". This is the general H100 thread, where people discuss chart facts and trends in the week of 05/25/2013. :)Don't try the smartass comments with me. I've seen all of y'all all week in the Pop forum trying to nitpick everything to fit your own agenda. And yes, that was her thread. :)

Also keep in mind that only U.S. views count toward Streaming Songs.
"Obsessed" was commercially released a couple of weeks or so after it premiered on radio, but it didn't have the radio exposure that the new single had out of the gate. So, a give-and-take there.
It's not a bad showing at all- I just think some have these totally unrealistic expectations that, based on her track record, she should fare better. Mimi's been cranking out hits for 23 years- she's not going to see the same level of success she once did. Once that's accepted, there shouldn't really be disappointment. Just enjoy it.

The fact that she's still doing this 23 years into her career is already an accomplishment per se. She doesn't need to prove anything anymore, especially not to her haters and the naysayers. Her resumé already speaks volumes, this is just adding to the already long list. This. And how often does an artist have a genuine hit 23 years into his/her career? And I am not saying "#Beautiful" is a genuine hit at this point, but it looks like it could be. For anyone to be downplaying that is pure hateration.

"Take a Bow" spent six weeks at #1 on Hot 100 Airplay in between "Lollipop" and "Forever." It spent two weeks at #1 on Hot Digital Songs in between "Bleeding Love" and "The Time of My Life." It was number one on the Hot 100 the week it debuted at #1 on Hot Digital Songs with 267k. I wonder how it would've fared on streaming. Probably would've done well, just not #1 because of "Bleeding Love," "Lollipop," and "Forever" all out at relatively the same time. Bleeding Love wouldn't have been as massive in streaming as it was in sales and airplay, and same with Take a Bow and Forever probably. I think Lollipop would've got a longer run at #1 with today's chart rules though, since if Lil Wayne's current songs are anything to go by, he does amazing on streaming.

And I love how it's always the ones that stay locked up in the Pop forum, stanning for the 20 years olds that are in their prime and racking up hit after hit because they are making the music that's hot at the moment. Mariah did all of that and more when she was at that point in her career. Now she could retire and live off of the name she made for herself.

Jesus I don't even remember the last time I heard "Take A Bow" by Rihanna played on the radio. Talk about a forgettable #1. In fact, when I first saw it I mistook it as a year typo for Madonna's song, and then I realized that Rihanna had a song with the same name. I actually had to sit here for a minute to even remember how Rihanna's song went. That must have gone to #1 for that one week on sales alone right? That's actually one of my favourite Rihanna #1s, and I remember it very well. It's one of those songs that everybody seems to play when there's a piano about lol. This is Europe though, maybe it wasn't so popular over in the US. So happy for Can't Hold Us being #1!!! Such an amazing song. And I hope Mirrors can get there too. And great debut for Mariah. "Take A Bow" was very popular at the time, #1 on Pop, #1 on Hot 100 Airplay, #1 on Hot 100, #1 in digital sales, I mean what else do people want? the song was a success for Rih lol I still hear the song at least once a week on my local top 40 station so it's not like it's forgotten, radio stations play mid to late 2000s hits often.

wow, with the almost GaGa/Born This Way level hype IDJ were creating I wouldve def. expected at least 150k just by default from a name like Mariah. IDJ went ALL out in an unprecedented way and the feedback has mainly been positive so although I had a feeling 125k would be around what it sold (based on its iTunes positions throughout the week), that's still just so so . I didnt say BAD lol- just not what Im sure most expected for a first week. A much as I disliked the song, didnt Madonna GMAYL even sell more (or about the same...cant remember)? Anyways, Obsessed sold around the same but that was 2009 so to sell 120k (I think it sold) would prob. be like 150-160k today but that song didnt have even 1/2 the hype and positive feedback this has. Regardless, #24 is still another top 40 placing for her. Most consider anything top 40 a 'hit' so it at least already accomplished that (esp after many poor performing songs in a row).

“Take a Bow” is like the worst Rihanna single ever. Wrong. The worst ones are definitely "SOS" and "We Ride".

GMAYL had SuperBowl hype. You can't compare its sales to "#Beautiful"'s. And digital sales in 2009 versus today aren't that different. “Take a Bow” is like the worst Rihanna single ever. Wrong. The worst ones are definitely "SOS" and "We Ride". Lies detected.

If your a fan of pop I think you have seen how difficult success on the charts can be and we talking in the matter of a few albums. So don't sit there and critique and put unrealistic expectations on someone who has stayed relevant for 23 fucking years...considering y'all sit there and make excuses for the younger girls y'all stan for, when they fizzled out half way through their first decade.

Really bad opening numbers for Mariah considering the huge exposure. Her first single in four years, supported by a major radio deal, with a music video premiere on American Idol during the release week. Should have done 150k at least. What's bad is the haters staying perched in her threads to point these silly things out. Like Mariah has always been a strong digital seller and is at her commercial peak. Miss me with that. The fact that she's still doing this 23 years into her career is already an accomplishment per se. She doesn't need to prove anything anymore, especially not to her haters and the naysayers. Her resumé already speaks volumes, this is just adding to the already long list. You're basically saying "This song is not a hit, but she doesn't need hits anymore because she was successful in the past." I disagree. While she doesn't really NEED hits, I'm quite sure she'd love to have some more.

So don't sit there and critique and put unrealistic expectations on someone who has stayed relevant for 23 f**king years...considering y'all sit there and make excuses for the younger girls y'all stan for, when they fizzled out half way through their first decade. Yeah, I'm shocked. I mean most people on here should know top 40 radio is very fickle and only few survive through the years. Just take a look at the artists who were smashing along with P!nk's "There You Go" back in 2000, exactly 13 years ago it was #16 on Pop and just last week "Just Give Me A Reason" is #1. You literally can count with one hand which are still relevant on CHR, she's like one of kind in terms of pop longevity. Now imagine all those hit-makers from 1990 when "Vision Of Love" was riding to to the top of the charts, but that's Mariah for you, they always want more and more from her. 13 years ago top 20: 1. Macy Gray - I Try 2. Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want 3. Britney Spears - Oops...I Did it Again 4. Sisqo - Thong Song 5. N Sync - Bye Bye Bye 6. Creed - Higher 7. Destiny's Child - Say My Name 8. Enrique Iglesias - Be With You 9. Sonique - It Feels So Good 10. Santana f/ The Product G&B - Maria Maria 11. Christina Aguilera - I Turn To You 12. Kid Rock - Only God Knows Why 13. Faith Hill - Breathe 14. Savage Garden - Crash and Burn 15. Vitamin C - Graduation (Friends Forever) 16. P!nk - There You Go 17. Matchbox Twenty - Bent 18. Goo Goo Dolls - Broadway 19. Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone 20. Marc Anthony - You Sang To Me

I'm not so sure that in retrospect "SOS" wasn't the origin of the Turbo Pop EDM movement on the pop charts. R&B divas had been staying in the Ashanti / Ciara mold until Rihanna introduced this song - heavily sampling an 80s Britpop song - that was a bigger hit on CHR than urban. I can't recall anything before 2006 opening the doors for Stargate's acoustic r&b sound at Rhythmic.

Who is "most," though? Anyone who has paid attention to Mariah's digital sales in general and certainly her poor record with singles the last few years would have never expected a 150k or more debut. Wasn't Madonna's debut week aided by a Super Bowl performance? That's a lot higher exposure than anything Mariah had, so I don't get the comparison. "#Beautiful" has also stayed in the teens at iTunes all week, and its position there is well ahead of its overall airplay position. So, for anyone to act like it should be doing better just seems odd to me.

If you look at the year-end Hot 100 for 1990 here, you can see that the only ones with a relevant song in the past 5 years has been Mariah and Madonna. Heck, look at the year-end chart for 1995 here and see that, again, the only ones still relevant in any way are Mariah, Darius Rucker via country, and (maybe) Madonna.

It was just too good a trolling comment to pass off. But yes, I agree with you, Mariah, like Madonna and others, has already gone beyond the expected mainstream/popularity lifespan that most pop stars have. I mentioned this somewhere a few months ago about how so many big names that we look back on had careers that, from their first hit until their last charting hit, the time frame wasn't as big as you'd expect. We all know Paula Abdul, for example, but her career on the pop charts lasted from, what 1989 to 1995? That's pretty short. The Rolling Stones, legendary, have a span from 1963-1994. This song for Mariah already pushes her from 1990-2013. So I agree that really, for the last ten years or so, everything Mariah has accomplished has just been icing. The same for Madonna for the last 15 or so years.

The CHR top 10 from July 27, 1990 is even crazier. It was the first of 3 weeks at #1 for "Vision Of Love":
1. Mariah Carey - Vision Of Love 2. Johnny Gill - Rub You The Right Way 3. Glenn Medeiros & Bobby Brown - She Ain't Worth It 4. Janet Jackson - Come Back To Me 5. Tyler Collins - Girls Nite Out 6. Sweet Sensation - If Wishes Came True 7. Billy Idol - Cradle Of Love 8. Michael Bolton - When I'm Back On My Feet Again 9. Go West - King Of Wishful Thinking 10. Seduction - Could This Be Love
Janet Jackson's last top 40 big smash was "Someone To Call My Lover" back in 2001. The rest haven't scored one hit in 20 years or more...

Considering she got a radio deal, American Idol promo, a video release and huge hype, I don't think it was unrealistic to expect the song to be at least a top 20 hit. Especially since Obsessed, the lead single of the previous era, was a decent hit.

It'll come down to longevity at this point, I think. It's something that most of the longer-term chart veterans haven't been able to secure with their singles in recent years. No Doubt, Madonna, even more recent ones (to me) Jennifer Lopez seem to be struggling while Christina Aguilera just can't catch a break. I feel like Britney might be the only one who can of all of the acts who have been around since the 90s or before.

"SOS" is one of her best! I loved it and played the hell out of it when it first came out, but for some reason it didn't age well at all for me and I don't really feel like listening to it nowadays It is definitely better than "We Ride", though but right now it ranks low for me. I actually think that's one of her few singles that has aged well. As far as hits go, her absolute worst are "Hate That I Love You," "Take a Bow," and "Cheers" to me.

It was just too good a trolling comment to pass off. Are you implying I was trolling? No. I said my comment was a trolling response to your comment, which I think is a bit unnecessarily defensive. I think my point was that a variation of your post is always used when a single by an established fav shows signs of underperforming. We all know that anyone who has had an album's worth of hits has their life set out for them (barring some serious spending habits) and everything else is icing on the cake. Adele's next album could flop and she'd still be rich. That's not going to stop any discussion about whether Beautiful is/should/deserves to be a hit or not.

Aw yes, Justin.
I still feel like Beyoncé is capable to stage a huge comeback too. Not that 4 flopped but just in terms of measurable massive mainstream hits (or MMMH).
