I get how, on the surface, it makes sense to compare "#Beautiful" to "Obsessed", the lead single from her last (non-holiday) studio album...but there's a lot to consider there:
in it's favor, "#Beautiful" has much higher airplay and had a high-profile video premiere.
working against it, she's coming off a string of flop singles (IWTKWLI, "H.A.T.E.U.", "Angels Cry", "Up Out My Face", "Oh Santa!", "Triumphant", "Almost Home"). "Obsessed" did come after a couple flops (IBLULT, ISIL), but the time since her last hit was much shorter. I also think the new Hot 100 formula will work against her, especially if she insists on making music videos featuring her with crazy eyes, shoving her hand in her crotch.

Mariah's key was she started out very young, and was able to pivot from the Michael Bolton / Celine late 80s AC mold through the Hip Hop explosion of the mid 90s - late 00's.
I found her image transformation from a 'girl next door type in 1991' to 'sex starlet in Hip Hop videos' a little jarring, but it sure worked in her marketing calculus.

Aw yes, Justin. I still feel like Beyoncé is capable to stage a huge comeback too. Not that 4 flopped but just in terms of measurable massive mainstream hits (or MMMH). “4” definitely underperformed though. The streaming rule should at least help her score a top 10 next era, in addition to great promotion she will likely have if her pre-music promo is an indication of what's to come. On the other hand, unfortunately, I think Christina is over beyond repair. I thought she couldn't go anywhere but up after 'Bionic.'

Considering she got a radio deal, American Idol promo, a video release and huge hype, I don't think it was unrealistic to expect the song to be at least a top 20 hit. Especially since Obsessed, the lead single of the previous era, was a decent hit. Is this not a hit? I don't think so! I said top 20 hit... Considering it didn't go top 20 (yet), it's not a top 20 hit (yet). Proclaiming something a "hit" is very subjective, it depends on a multitude of things. But no, I personally don't consider a (pop) song under top 20 a hit in most cases, unless the artist had a bad track record prior, or it's a format exclusive single, album track etc. Neither are the case here though, as Mariah is still a relevant artist and there were a lot of factors indicating a better performance.

I'm not so sure that in retrospect "SOS" wasn't the origin of the Turbo Pop EDM movement on the pop charts. R&B divas had been staying in the Ashanti / Ciara mold until Rihanna introduced this song - heavily sampling an 80s Britpop song - that was a bigger hit on CHR than urban. I can't recall anything before 2006 opening the doors for Stargate's acoustic r&b sound at Rhythmic. I agree. I've always believed that the rise of electropop/dance-pop can be traced back to 2006 (or even before). But a lot of people seem to be determined to trace it back to whenever their favourite pop star debuted... It started waaaay before 2009 like some people want to believe. It was already in full fling in 2008 when songs like Forever, Disturbia, Womanizer, and Hot N Cold were smashing. Around 2006 time, you had a lot of artists bridging a gap between R&B/hip hop and dance/electronic, especially Justin Timberlake (Sexy Back, My Love), Nelly Furtado (Promiscuous, Maneater), Timbaland (Give It to Me, The Way I Are). So that's when it started in my opinion. There were loads of R&B singers starting to put trance synths (much like the ones in Only Girl) in their songs around 2006 time, and in my (and many others) opinion that was an evolution of crunk music, so it could even be traced by to Lil Jon in 2003, or Yeah! in 2004. SOS by Rihanna, like you say, is an important one, since it was the first pure dance-pop song (no urban elements at all) to get to #1, probably since about 2000 I believe? Sexy Chick by David Guetta has a similar beat to Tainted Love/SOS too. I remember having a fascinating discussion on an Internet forum back in 2008 about this when American Boy by Estelle/Kanye West (produced by will.i.am) got released. That was the moment when it really clicked in my mind what was about to happen.

To be fair I think christinia went a little up after bionic just not enough. She had her two successful features and burlesque . Your body didnt do much but just a fool did a ton better you lost me . Lotus is at around 250k with bionic not terribly farther ahead. I'd say she's Gone a tad up

Either Billboard fucked up again, or they're counting "Selena Gomez & The Scene" as a different artist.

Either Billboard f**ked up again, or they're counting "Selena Gomez & The Scene" as a different artist. Oh, definitely could be the latter. I didn't think about that. Still, typically they include a side-note with people's previous band hits with things like this, though. So idk. Although they mentioned Who Says, LYLALS, etc. earlier in the article. Idk.

oooh...Paul's askin' for trouble with this title... Paul Grein's Chart Watch: Week Ending May 12, 2013. Songs: #Letdown~~~ Updated with positions below the Top 10! ~~~“#Beautiful” by Mariah Carey featuring Miguel enters the Hot 100 at #24, lower than I expected. I bet it’s lower than Carey expected, too. The ideal outcome for Carey would have been for Ryan Seacrest to grandly announce on tonight’s American Idol that Carey’s song entered the Hot 100 at #1. Carey has accomplished that chart miracle three times (more often than any other artist) with “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day” (a collabo with Boyz II Men) and “Honey.” But it wasn’t to be. The song is easily the week’s highest new entry, but it’s only the eighth highest entry so far this year. Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” debuted at #1 in February. “The Way” by Carey sound-alike Ariana Grande featuring Mac Miller debuted at #10 in March. Other songs to have debuted at #24 or higher so far this year are Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” (#12 in March), PSY’s “Gentleman” (#12 in April), Luke Bryan’s “Crash My Party” (#18 in April), “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams (#19 in April) and Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” (#24 in February). “# Beautiful” enters Hot Digital Songs at #10, with first-week sales of 114K. It’s Carey’s eighth top 10 hit on the digital sales chart; her first since “Obsessed” nearly four years ago. It holds at #44 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. It falls short of the Streaming Songs chart with 461K first-week streams. This doesn’t mean the song is a bomb. It merely means it may take more time to build into genuine hit status. I still think it will come through. It helps that it’s a great record—one of the most appealing summer jams since Janet Jackson’s “That’s The Way Love Goes” 20 years ago. “# Beautiful” is vying to become Carey’s 29th top 10 hit on the Hot 100; her first since “Obsessed” hit #7 in September 2009. It’s vying to become the first top 10 hit for Miguel, the highly-touted R&B singer whose breakout hit “Adorn” climbed as high as #17. The casting on this record is ideal. Carey is a household name with a long string of hits. Miguel is far less well-known, but there’s probably more heat and buzz on him within the industry “# Beautiful” will appear on Carey’s 11th (non-holiday) studio album, which is due this summer. A second current hit, “#That Power” by will.i.am featuring Justin Bieber, has a title that begins with the trendy hashtag symbol. Selena Gomez lands her first top 10 hit on the Hot 100 as “Come & Get It” vaults from #14 to #7 in its fifth week. Gomez amassed five top 40 hits with her backing group, The Scene, but none had quite cracked the top 20. Those hits included the first-rate singles “Who Says” (#21 in 2011) and “Love You Like A Love Song” (#22 last year). Gomez, who turns 21 on July 22, first hit the top 20 in August 2009 as part of a collabo dubbed Disney’s Friends For Change. She teamed on the record with Demi Lovato (who also made the top 10 with her current hit, “Heart Attack”) as well as with two artists whose hit-making power has dimmed since then, Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers. Gomez’s first solo album, Stars Dance, is due this summer. All three studio albums by Selena Gomez & The Scene made the top 10 on The Billboard 200. Incidentally, this marks the second time that a song titled “Come & Get It” has made the top 10. A Paul McCartney song with the same title (except with an “and” instead of an ampersand) became a #7 hit for Badfinger in April 1970. “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton holds at #1 for the second week. It’s #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the fourth straight week. “Thrift Shop” (featuring Wanz) headed the R&B chart the previous 14 weeks. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is the first (lead or featured) artist to remain #1 on this chart for 18 or more consecutive weeks since Lil Wayne was on top for 18 consecutive weeks (as a featured artist) in 2011 with Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation” and then DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One” (which also featured Drake and Rick Ross). “Can’t Hold Us” tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the third week in a row. “Thrift Shop” held that spot for 10 weeks. Thus, the duo has headed the digital sales chart for 13 of the 19 chart weeks so far in 2013. “Thrift Shop” also reaches a milestone this week. It tops the 5 million mark in 2013 sales. This is the earliest in the year that a song has sold 5 million copies in that calendar year. “Thrift Shop” knocked more than a month off the pace set by the old record-holder, “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which achieved the feat in the week ending June 17, 2012. “Thrift Shop” is far ahead of the 2013 pack. No other song has sold even 3 million copies so far this year. “Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess holds at #2 for the second week. The elegantly designed duet echoes the aforementioned “Somebody That I Used To Know,” another classy male/female romantic saga. That smash won the Grammy for Record of the Year in February. “Just Give Me A Reason” is likely to be in the running for the award next year. Speaking of P!nk, her 2011 hit “F**kin’ Perfect” tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s her third song to reach this level. It follows “So What” (4,585,000) and “Raise Your Glass” (4,093,000). “F**kin’ Perfect” reached #2 on the Hot 100 in February 2011. Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” holds at #8 for the second week. The song is #1 on Hot Rock Songs for the eighth week. The band’s new hit, “Demons,” surges from #91 to #64 in its eighth week. “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly dips from #9 to #10. The song has already reached #8. The song spends its 11th week at #1 on Hot Country Songs. That’s the longest run at #1 since Buck Owens’ “Love’s Gonna Live Here” spent 16 weeks on top from October 1963 through February 1964. This is the longest run at #1 by an ongoing duo since “Don’t Let Me Cross Over” by the husband-and-wife duo Carl Butler and Pearl topped the chart for 11 weeks in 1962-1963. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs: The Top Five: “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton holds at #1 for the second week in its 14th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (241K)…“Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess holds at #2 for the second week in its 13th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (230K)…Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” holds at #3 for the second week in its 13th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (168K)… Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” rebounds from #5 to #4 in its 21st week on the chart. This is its 14th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (115K)…“Stay” by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko dips from #4 to #5 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (145K). The Second Five: Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It” jumps from #14 to #6 in its fifth week on the chart. It’s her first top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #6 (143K)…“Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz dips from #6 to #7 in its 32nd week on the chart. This is its 21st week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (96K)… Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” holds at #8 for the second week in its 37th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (141K)…“I Love It” by Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX drops from #7 to #9 in its 15th week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (128K)….“Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly dips from #9 to #10 in its 32nd week. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (151K). “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera drops from #10 to #13, ending a seven-week run in the top 10. Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack” jumps from #12 to #11 in its 11th week. “The Way” by Ariana Grande featuring Mac Miller jumps from #15 to #12 in its seventh week. Both songs have already reached #10. “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams rebounds from #17 to #15 in its fourth week. The song has already climbed as high as #14. The song holds at #1 for the third straight week on the Official U.K. Chart. It’s just the second hit by a French artist to spend three or more weeks at # 1 in the U.K. It follows Charles Aznavour’s “She,” which spent four weeks at #1 in 1974. Aznavour, who was 50 at the time, was a huge international star. He’ll turn 89 next week (May 22). Fall Out Boy’s “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” rebounds from #18 to #16 in its 14th week. The song has already reached #15…Blake Shelton lands his third top 20 hit as “Boys ’Round Here” (featuring Pistol Annies & Friends) jumps from #23 to #19 in its seventh week. This hit follows “Austin” (#18” in 2001) and “Honey Bee” (#13 in 2011)… “Highway Don’t Care” by Tim McGraw with Taylor Swift jumps from #29 to #23 in its 11th week…Emeli Sande’s “Next To Me” jumps from #34 to #26 in its 12th week. Avril Lavigne lands her 10th top 30 hit as “Here’s To Never Growing Up” surges from #60 to #30 in its fifth week. Lavigne is 28, two years younger than John Cougar was in 1982 when he sang (in “Jack & Diane”) “hold onto 16 as long as you can…” “Never growing up” is a perennial theme in pop music. “Clarity” by Zedd featuring Foxes jumps from #58 to #41 in its eighth week…Anna Kendrick’s “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” jumps from #52 to #44 in its 20th week…Jason Derulo’s “The Other Side” jumps from #65 to #50 in its fourth week…“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell jumps from #70 to #54 in its fourth week. Lana Del Rey’s “Young And Beautiful” leaps from #95 to #59 in its third week. The song from The Great Gatsby soundtrack is Del Rey’s highest-charting hit. “Video Games” reached #91 in 2012. “Live It Up” by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull is the week’s second highest new entry at #73. This is their third teaming. “On The Floor” hit #3. “Dance Again” reached #17…Little Mix’s “Wings” leaps from #94 to #79 in its sixth week. The song reached #1 on The Official U.K. Chart in September…Gloriana’s “Can’t Shake You” debuts at #83. It’s from A Thousand Miles Left Behind, which came out last July. Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” debuts at #90. It’s vying to become her third top 10 hit, following the #1 smash “Call Me Maybe” and “Good Time,” a collabo with Owl City which reached #8. Randy Houser’s “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” debuts at #91. It’s from his third studio album, How Country Feels…Danielle Bradbery’s version of Pam Tillis’ 1992 hit “Maybe It Was Memphis” debuts at #92. Bradbery, 16, is a contestant on The Voice. Tillis’ recording didn’t make the Hot 100 (country songs rarely did back then), but reached #3 on Hot Country Songs…Easton Corbin’s “All Over The Road” debuts at #98. It’s the title song from his second studio album, which was released in September…“Tapout” by Rich Gang featuring Birdman, Lil Wayne, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj & Future debuts at #100. This is from the Young Money compilation Rich Gang: Flashy Lifestyle, which is due May 21. Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted” tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It’s the 12th country song to achieve that milestone. Hayes is the second country male solo artist to land a 3 million-seller. He follows Jason Aldean, who scored with “Dirt Road Anthem.” Hayes, 21, is the second youngest solo artist in country music history to land a 3 million-seller. Taylor Swift was 19 when she first reached the plateau in March 2009 with “Love Story.” “Wanted” reached #16 on the Hot 100. It logged three weeks at #1 on Hot Country Songs. “Scream & Shout” by will.i.am & Britney Spears also tops the 3 million mark in digital sales. It’s the third 3-million-seller for both artists. will.i.am previously hit the 3 million mark as the featured artist on Usher’s “OMG” (4,719,000) and Fergie’s “Fergalicious” (3,121,000). Spears previously scored with “Womanizer” (3,380,000) and “Circus” (3,043,000). “Scream & Shout” reached #3 on the Hot 100. To My Readers: Enjoy the Idol finale. music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-may-12-2013-songs-letdown-205153774.html

Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Tonight I’m Getting Over You.” This is vying to become her third top 10 hit, following the #1 smash “Call Me Maybe” and “Good Time,” a collabo with Owl City which reached #8.
Hopefully it charts. LOL at him saying it's vying to be her 3rd top 10, though. Clearly not going to happen. :'(

The ideal outcome for Carey would have been for Ryan Seacrest to grandly announce on tonight’s American Idol that Carey’s song entered the Hot 100 at #1. noooooo

"“Come & Get It” vaults from #14 to #7 in its fifth week." ............................ When he lists the top 10 later it says 14 to 6; the 7 was a typo. I had the same thought though lmao

:'( *sigh* that Top 10 line just feels like a mean tease. :( I think Paul assumes (probably accurately) that the majority of his readers don't follow the Hot 100 the way Pulse folk do (keeping close track of iTunes and airplay data throughout the week) and don't realize how ridiculous those statements are. the same goes for his "Mariah debuting at No. 1" remarks...there was obviously no chance in hell that was going to happen.

Paul Grein is delusional if he thought Mariah would debut at #1. What kinda lying to himself?

Yeah, I doubt even Mariah thought she would debut at #1.

Paul Grein probably looked at Record Research's Top Pop Singles and counted "Forever" as a top 10 for Mimi.
I think any of the acts in their 30s will have an easier time than one 40s and beyond. Of course, some in their 30s continue to struggle with their own releases, too.

At this point she's probably just thankful that it charted.

At this point she's probably just happy that it charted. Someone mentioned the AI performance and I wonder what it will do to sales, since the song was already shown via video. It will be interesting to see if a live performance makes a huge impact/difference.

Janet was 35 when she had her last top 10 single.
