Well Madonna was in her 30s in the 90s right? She was not as consistent as the 80s, but she had Vogue in the early 90s, and then a sort of low point with Erotica in...I'm gonna say 92? Although she still had success in the album, but there was backlash with the explicit video and the sex book and all. She had a pretty successful album mid 90s with Bedtime Stories, and then Ray of Light was 98, and I think she was just shy of 40 at that point. I'm sure Holidayguy can help me out with the Madonna stuff.

Mariah was 31 when Glitter came out, and that is the start of a commercial drought for her, that lasted til she was 35 when Emancipation of Mimi came out, and of course she had a huge era at 35-36. Of course she had a collabo in 03 with Busta that went top 10, so there's that. She was 38 with E=MC2 (one #1, one top 20), and she released Memoirs at 39 (one top 10). As of this point, Mariah scored her last top 10 when she was 39. Let's hope she can get top 10 with #Beautiful. I think she can, judging from the relatively stable sales and healthily increasing airplay.

I kept trying to think of a concise way to answer that Mariah/Madonna/Janet question and just ended up drafting really long posts...so kudos for summing it up nicely! :)

in terms of success in their 30's, Madonna's easily the winner...in addition to the albums/eras mentioned above, she was 30+ when Like A Prayer and The Immaculate Collection came out. Madonna was also the oldest of the 3 when she had her breakthrough (24-25), compared to 20 for Mariah and Janet.

Yes it will see a drop compared to last week unless AI boosts it, but I was referring to how it's been in the 14-16 range for several days now.

Madonna scored decent-sized hits at radio when she was 42-44, but U.S. radio wasn't quite as ageist back then. Now, it's been 30 years since the release of her debut, so, really, how many more big, long-lasting hits is she supposed to have? "Give Me All..." had a great setup leading up to the Super Bowl, and it had a few weeks of play at pop radio before stations started dropping it. But, hey, it was another top 10, almost 28 years after her first.

I think the Mimi/Miguel single can see a boost from Idol, but I have doubts that it will be a BIG one, based on past impact from performances. Plus, the could be others that get a bigger one- and, I imagine the winner's single may enjoy the most attention.

I'm not sure if I would compare Mariah's Beautiful with Madonna's GMAYL.

Miguel takes over Beautiful. Nicki Minaj has a smaller role in GMAYL.

A better comparison would be with Madonna's 4 Minutes. Justin Timberlake takes over 4M.

GMAYL debuted with 115k in sales. Mariah 114k in sales. So close! WEIRD

The Super Bowl is the most watched in the US. I believe the World Cup is the most watched event in the world. (Our football isn't that popular outside of US/Canada, parts of Mexico and some Europe - but it airs in middle of night there.)

Yes, GMAYL did 115K in three days (which coincided with its first five days of airplay, 44 million), and then 165K for the first full week (which coincided with 20m BDS audience). Bruce Springsteen had performed a current single (a few months post-release) with the E Street Band at the Super Bowl, and that resulted in a Hot 100 appearance at No. 95. Madonna's always been a bigger pop-radio draw than the Boss, though, so not surprise that a new single would fare better on the Hot 100.

The Madonna airplay promo was an exciting weekend- it was like the old days, hearing her new release so often. Without a radio promotion, that just wouldn't happen these days, otherwise.

Re 4 Minutes- not one of my favorite M tracks but she and JT were on it pretty equally. She didn't have to let him sing the title, though.

Goodwill? I doubt it. AI has been a disaster in the ratings this season and fingers are directly pointed at MC and NM. I haven't heard or read a single positive thing about MC being on AI. (And, I've never watched a single episode of AI, but I still see the articles across the various media platforms.)

I agree. I've always believed that the rise of electropop/dance-pop can be traced back to 2006 (or even before). But a lot of people seem to be determined to trace it back to whenever their favourite pop star debuted... It started waaaay before 2009 like some people want to believe. It was already in full fling in 2008 when songs like Forever, Disturbia, Womanizer, and Hot N Cold were smashing.

Around 2006 time, you had a lot of artists bridging a gap between R&B/hip hop and dance/electronic, especially Justin Timberlake (Sexy Back, My Love), Nelly Furtado (Promiscuous, Maneater), Timbaland (Give It to Me, The Way I Are). So that's when it started in my opinion. There were loads of R&B singers starting to put trance synths (much like the ones in Only Girl) in their songs around 2006 time, and in my (and many others) opinion that was an evolution of crunk music, so it could even be traced by to Lil Jon in 2003, or Yeah! in 2004.

SOS by Rihanna, like you say, is an important one, since it was the first pure dance-pop song (no urban elements at all) to get to #1, probably since about 2000 I believe? Sexy Chick by David Guetta has a similar beat to Tainted Love/SOS too.

I remember having a fascinating discussion on an Internet forum back in 2008 about this when American Boy by Estelle/Kanye West (produced by will.i.am) got released. That was the moment when it really clicked in my mind what was about to happen.

More significantly, another artist racking up titles in Glee-like fashion, Lil Wayne has 6 credited songs this week including #100
