Near You by Francis Craig from 1947 - 17 weeks. (Good tune!) Do you have a list of the songs that spent 10+ weeks at #1 from July 1940-August 1958?

The entire top 10 is now male lead artists! Interesting.

I thought Anna might leapfrog Jason before that happened, but I guess not.

But "Clarity" does have a female on lead vocals, even though she's not the credited lead.

"One Sweet Day" had four things going its way: It came out and peaked during the Christmas freeze; It benefited from the unprecedented lack of retail singles being released commercially; It also benefited from less competition based on the (then) new slower mid 90s single release pattern (based on labels reacting to new slowed-down BDS charts). However, back then Hot 100 airplay did not include r&b or adult r&b like today: Imagine OSD's added points! BL has a lot more competition from streaming, YouTube, etc. 17 weeks is not impossible, but the conditions have to be perfect. Also, One Sweet Day crossed alot of 'music lines'. Everyone could relate to that song, it had arguably the 2 biggest artists at that time, together, and it's a great gut wrenching song imo.

There wasn't an unprecedented amount of retail singles not being released. One Sweet Day was released with heavy competition. It just won out and by January there was not competition...so naturally it stayed #1 for a long time. Plus it benefitted from being #1 at every format accept Rock and Country.

"One Sweet Day" was HUGE, it spent 10 weeks at #1 on Adult Top 40 and 11 wks on Top 40 Mainstream. Deserved imo, those lyrics are beautiful. :)

Considering the fact that "Exhale" by Whitney stayed for (11 or 12?) weeks at #2 behind it. But I'm not aware if that is a tight competition though

Adonis, by late 1995, dozens of hit songs were being withheld from retail. It had escalated dramatically since the practice went mainstream in 1990.
It got worse, but at that point in music history, it was unprecedented.
As I mentioned above, 2Pac and Dr Dre's unreleased airplay smash would have probably toppled OSD by mid-Feb.

California Love peaked at #19 in April 1996
Although I agree there was a pent up sales demand for it. It went to #1 anyway, when it was released as a single

I thought that changed in 1998 when tracks were allowed to chart. If so, #19 had to be for pop only. The song was everywhere.

It was pop only but that #19 ranking is what would determine its status on the Hot 100
Which is why I said the comment about pent up sales demand. We all know it went to #1 anyway

The boy is mine has to be the luckiest song that it spent 13 weeks at #1. it was a good song, but not that good.
Also Boys II Men have 3 songs w/ 13 weeks at #1 or more. they were huge, then all of a sudden done. Their disappearance still to this day confuses me. No idea how they went from top to nowhere so quickly.

No idea how they went from top to nowhere so quickly. I always thought it a bit weird too, since they were soooo huge. But I think they failed to evolve, despite their 1997 album called (I think?) Evolution. That album is when they began to lose their stronghold. They had one #1 single, the lead single, and a few other hits. That was their last album that did anything significant. I suppose if they had added more edge to their sound from that point forward - perhaps adding rap features to cater to what was popular in the late 90s/early 00s - they could have maintained relevance a bit longer.

As with any artist, if your music does not change with the times, your music will no longer sell.

Agree about "The Boy is Mine". Fantastic song, great collabo, but 13 weeks? I bet Brandy & Monica were pleased that "Iris" and "Torn" weren't released commercially.
Boyz II Men - despite their huge first uptempo hit ("Motownphilly") - became pigeon-holed by PDs as a one-trick pony, as only coming out with slow downtempo songs. T hey only really released one fast song in 7 years ("Thank You") as opposed to 13 ballads. There was no perceived versatility. They also lost their hip factor compared to comparable acts like Dru Hill (or later KC & JoJo), and were lumped in psychologically with the early mid r&B groups that they helped spawn (Color Me Badd, Shai, Silk), that had all become passé by 1999.
I agree though... they sure fell hard and fast from very high up.

256.591M
He should beat her by Friday. And remember, there is no official Mediabase overall airplay chart (unlike individual formats like CHR, Hot AC, etc..) so once he beats her, the record is broken. It doesn't have to fall on a Sunday.

The BDS mark will be one to watch (Wed.-Tues.)- it likely won't get there for this chart week (barring a lesser discrepancy between BDS and Mediabase), so it would have to see another week of solid gains to pass 212.2m.
"Treasure" sure has rebounded nicely.
