Actually, direct Soundcloud link. We won't get in trouble for this since we didn't post the leak, will we? Haha

I am probably not in her target demo (middle schoolers) because I am cringing at those lyrics. Really good chorus, terrible verses but all around uninspired. I get that the whole "Fireworks" concept and formula works for her but this redux is trying very hard.
It is very safe and very Katy Perry. She's found her lane and is sticking to it.

It's not bad, but not great either. I like the fun. sounding drums in it. It's gonna be a good sized hit and probably be every white girl's Facebook status. I kind of feel like a song called "Roar" should sound...bigger? I think it needs a big sounding bridge in it. It's okay.

The one kc98 posted still works. Works now but when I checked earlier the soundcloud link they had was broken. They've since put up a new one.

What a smash. Love hearing this heavier sound on her for a first single.

Wow, there are quite a few similarities. The concept is more or less the same and excusable but its the production elements that made me blink twice.

regarding all the "safe" comments - is there an implication that this approach is uncommon or somehow unique to Katy? were people really expecting this to be bluegrass or heavy metal? I can't think of many major pop stars over the past couple decades who have truly drastically changed their sound from one album to the next, especially at the peak of their popularity. "Russian Roulette" jumps to mind, since it didn't sound like anything on GGGB nor did it seem at all suited for Pop radio in 2009. Madonna also jumps to mind, but you could argue that she didn't start to really mix things up until Album #4.
that said, after a first few listens, I'm definitely liking this! as someone else menttioned, it doesn't hit you as hard as a title like "Roar" would imply, but it's still getting stuck in my head. I'd really love to see this reach No. 1 (not only because I like Katy and this song, but I'm also ready for a little shake-up atop the Hot 100). ;)

The implication isn't to "change drastically" but to evolve with something progressive. Katy is a Pop act and should stick to Pop, but surely there's something fresh that's already popular but not mainstream that she could have introduced. For instance, Britney is working with Naughty Boy on her next album, who is totally commercial and totally Pop, but without a doubt fresher than Nate Reuss or neo-Avril at this point. Again, I'm not saying this song is shit because it's pleasant enough, but it's just completely non-remarkable.

I think this will go #1 on CHR, HAC, Hot 100 and go 4x platinum at least. :) Go Katy!

Meh; the chorus is good but otherwise I'm disinterested.
This should do wonderfully for her though.

Again, I'm not saying this song is s**t because it's pleasant enough, but it's just completely non-remarkable. I think it's really, and I mean really irrelevant that bringing in a new producer is what should be the target for every pop girl's new releases these days. I'm not sure since when that's deemed to be remarkable. And yes, it's just a new producer because don't tell me that for example Rihanna brought the sound of EDM to the US because of that repetitive mess of a Calvin Harris song when David Guetta had multiple hits in the States prior to We Found Love. I think it's just a little petty, and honestly seems like it's worth nothing more than bragging rights for fanbases on music forums. Britney's work with Naughty Boy could turn out to be horrible and make her worse off than before. Katy evolved, not much but she did, with this song and it's possible that the real evolution of Katy Perry's sound is still lurking as single #2 or #3.

This is bad. Is Bonnie trying to sabotage Katie? She said in interviews she sometimes wonders why she's not the one on stage and feels envious

This is not bad, but it's unoffensive, so unoffensive that 'Meow' would be a more suited name for the song. It will be a hit though, because of the huge hype the Katy Perry's brand has right now.
I'm sure it'll grow on me, even right now I like it, it's just that I was expecting Katy to come back a little bit stronger. I'm sure Prism will be packed with hits though, so I'm counting on the second single to be a little bit more edgy and I pray to God the album doesn't pull a Warrior.
And yes, Sara Bareilles did it better with Brave, such a shame radio nor the general public supported that song.

I think it's really, and I mean really irrelevant that bringing in a new producer is what should be the target for every pop girl's new releases these days. It's not about a "new producer" so much as progress and evolution. If that requires a new producer, so be it, but there's other ways as well. In the case of "Roar" there's no doubt that it procures the ingredients required to push for a #1 hit, which perhaps is the only goal, but it's basically slopping the Teenage Dream writing formula and replacing a dancepop instrumental from 2011 over a fun.-drum instrumental du jour. Live fast, die young. Fast hit, watch it sound dated in three years time. Why so quick to dismiss other opinions as being biased by "fanbase" while your username and avatar are so decked out? Do you see anyone in my avatar?
