I can't wait to hear this "Brave" rip-off sung live. It's going to be amazingly awful. Lol

The thing is, Gaga tried that with "Born this Way," and it didn't work. It hit #1, but all the follow-up singles and the album underperformed in comparison to what everyone was expecting. Katy is smart enough to know that, while this song is different thaan most of her material, it's not a HUGE departure from what she's done before. "Born This Way" is not what I was suggesting. What new sound or producer did it employ? It was same ol' Gagadonna with the pretension turnt way up. A better example would be Rihanna importing Calvin Harris and his sound to the US on "We Found Love." Eh I def thought that BTW sounded different for Gaga and different for what was on radio at the time. Judas was a lot more in line with typical Gaga stuff but it oddly didn't do well.

I LOVE IT! I don't care what anyone says, it's different, empowering, catchy, and her voice sounds great. #1, multi-platinum hit to be

I like it, just enough of a deviation from the KP formula without losing sight of why she's dominated radio the last three years.

I'm starting to fear I will like this a lot more than "Applause". Three plays already one-after-one... HUGE. ily Ilyt. ;)

She's setting herself up perfectly for a Paula Abdul-style career. Solid amount of #1s but failure to evolve with changing musical landscapes. Yeah, pretty much. But that isn't to say Paula (or Katy) don't have catchy songs that were great in the moment. It's nothing new but I like it. The "oh oh oh" sounds more like Avril than anything. And I bet it's post-chorus between chorus 1 and verse 2, and then between chorus 2 and the bridge. I was right. #insideinformation

Pop radio swung in a more earthy direction and she and her team have reacted to it. Not changing would be releasing CG 2.0 or a Gaga/Pitbull '09-'11 electropop record. They should just release this to retailers and streaming right now to not miss out on revenue. BL is so huge that it's not like their opportunity cost for waiting until the original date is a Hot 100 #1 right now.

This is OK; decent melody and nice production. I just think it's kind of safe and sounds like so many other songs. Plus, the lyrics really don't match such a tame song.
This to me sounds like a really good second single that cements an album campaign. I think it's generic enough to be a big hit though as first single.

Trying to decide what's more ridiculous: anyone expecting that she was going to do anything other than safe pop music or the comparisons to Paula Abdul and Ke$ha.

It's a power pop song so they changed as much as they needed to but this sound isn't exactly what's "in" or seen as being at the forefront of pop music right now. That and it wouldn't have sounded that out of place on the Confectionary re-release.
If we *HAVE* to compare (and I don't think we do), Gaga's BTW sound was much more different than TFM sound than this song is for Katy from her TD sound.
I'll also add that I'm not knocking the song or the scenario at all. I like it. I think it's catchy and I think Katy has released a song that does her best. I'd say it more depends on the next singles to see if she can stay in the game.

You guys overreacting and claiming she's going nowhere with her safe career are delusional. She has the most calculated management that have made the right decision time and time again with Teenage Dream. The only time she'll truly do something different is when her pop appeal fades. It's about marketability and did it right with this song, it's going to be huge and sets her up perfectly to go head to head with Gaga.

Sounds more like you're talking about a lone single she put out over 5 years ago rather than her entire career.

I really don't hear anything from Teenage Dream in this AT ALL. Not even close. But, as Xeezy said, the re-release, sure. Definitely. As for this song, it's riding the fun./Imagine Dragons style to magnificent effect. Pop radio gold. It's also my favorite Katy Perry song, vocally, lyrically, emotionally. It's anthemic but easy to sing along to and it even made me tear up a bit. Great job, Katy.

I like this. Her voice doesn't sound as annoying as I expected. It's nothing otherworldly, but it definitely packs a punch. #BOP I'm just not looking forward to hearing this live.

I'd say it more depends on the next singles to see if she can stay in the game. I think it would have fit on the re-release lyrically, but not in this form. It would have probably been redone the way Dressin' Up was. And to speak to your Gaga reference, BTW marked a significant downturn in her success (honestly, more than most were expecting (it's not like the phenomenal success of her debut was expected be replicated by any rational individual, but the performance of the singles on the whole was less than most would have though either way) imo), so the fact that this isn't such a huge jump off is not a negative whatsoever. The change from TFM to BTW wasn't that big either, just not well-fleshed out. Either way, shifting gears too much is not a good idea for any mainstream artist. The intent is to build a bridge between your audience and your evolution, not to go into overdrive and leave them behind.
