I just ran a Google for "Katy Perry Sara Bareilles"and a plethora of articles discussing plagiarism are already up. I can't find one single legit source that says it's an actual sample, but then again, it has only been a few hours. Look, it's even spreading to Italy now. |

I'm sure if it's legit plagiarism, legal action will be taken swifty. It's not like either artist is completely unknown here. Both artists have hits to their name, both songs are liable to be hits. ("Brave" is still increasing on both hot AC and AC in both of their top 20s and "Roar" is destined to smash.) Both will know about each other's songs soon (if they don't already) and we'll see what happens from there.

Brave is increasing a bit on Itunes. Slay a bit some 4 months later Sara! It did go top 10 on Itunes so at least Katy copied a song people like.

It's not just the chord progression though, its a lot more... All that really matters in the legal world, however, is the top-line melody, and that deviates enough. While melodies can be copyrighted, chord progressions and rhythms are not subject to copyright protection. There's really no legal basis for requiring a sample here, especially since the biggest similarity is the (common) chord progression. Boring, but just throwing it out there. |

Does this have a chance at debuting #1? Or going #1 its first full week? I think it will sell tons and probably have a lot of airplay. However, I am not sure the video is coming this week or streaming so those will be zero or close to it, I am guessing. However, Blurred Lines is somehow still selling tons and its airplay is astronomical so may not be possible.

SLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and covered with goosebumps!
That ending chorus is just everything. Have only listened to it twice, and I think it's pretty darn perfect. Great, catchy verses, amazing chorus, and an awesome ending. This has #1 SMASH written all over it. This will easily get to #1 on CHR and Hot AC, no doubt. Top 15 RHY, Top 10 AC maybe.
I also don't think this sounds like anything on Teenage Dream as well. It's not a major progression, no, but its a step forward. Katy makes pure pop songs, and this fits the bill quite nicely. I certainly wasn't expecting a Burqa or anything, lol.
To me, this is a total bullseye. Safe, insanely catchy, commercial, and exactly what she should be doing right now. I'm very pleased.

I just saw the actual breakdown in the Hot 100 thread-wow I had no idea Blurred Lines was THAT dominant. It is sort of amusing to me that Katy and Gaga have a good possibility of being denied by Blurred Lines-a song that has already spent weeks at #1 so should be weakening Though, the formula change works in his favor. I am assuming Katy at least will have a shot at #1 a few weeks down the road when the video debuts and sales/streaming/airplay all line up. |

I hope they don't put it on iTunes right now. Those would be wasted sales. Yea people are downloading it left and right, but as long as they keep taking down links, everything will be fine. I see this debuting because of airplay obviously, and then jumping to the Top 5. This is easily a Top 10 hit for her.

This is a trend with Katy. "California Gurls" was a legitimate ripoff of "Tik Tok," but it was ~okay since they had the same (lazy) producer. Although this may not be as blatant, it's definitely more worrying.
And it is certainly more blatant than the BTW/Express Yourself similarity.

I feel like because Cali Gurls was such an anthem and so undeniable in it's catchiness the Tik Tok similarities were easier to overlook. This however is nowhere near as anthemic or catchy as CG so the similarity to Brave sticks out much more.
