Em needs to sell 1million copies. He already peaked and Katy is coming back. The song isn't an instant hit and Katy's is much more recognizable right now. The record company thought Em could do it on name alone. That works during a slow period at the end of spring or something but that won't work with heavy competition from record breaking and near record breaking singles.

Question regarding Spotify, not sure if anyone can help.
"Roar" and "Applause" were released to Spotify on the same day (or maybe one day apart?). In the two weeks since there release, "Roar" ranked #10 and #4, "Applause" ranked #23 and #9 (p.s. good for both of them raising on streaming that quickly - a good sign that people aren't just downloading both because of hype but are actually listening to the songs more than once). But when you go to Katy & Gaga's respective Spotify pages and it shows the total plays for each of their top 10 songs, "Roar" is at 4.5 million and "Applause" at 4.4 million. How come their totals are close together despite being pretty far apart on the songs ranking?

Those artist pages are misleading all the time, I don't really know what's going on there..
Can you see the plays from Spotify weekly charts and count them together?
EDIT: Could those 4.4 and 4.5 million be worldwide plays?

Soundtrack singles aren't "real singles"? So if a soundtrack single turns into a big hit, would it still not be a "real single"? Soundtrack singles, at one time, were just as successful or close to it, as singles from an act's album. if it track clicks, it will click, regardless of its purpose. But, again, someone like Spears will drum up big-enough interest in the lead single from a new album,

What childrens movie soundtrack songs have done well in recent years? Part of Me? I can't even think of regular ones, It Will Rain? Edit: Skyfall

Young and Beautiful became Lana Del Rey's highest charting song at that time. That and It Will Rain come to mind.
Ooh La La is so horrible and pointless that it can't have a positive impact on Britney's career.. It's more of a case how bad is the negative impact.

Back to Britney - her song will do fine out of the gate. More troubling was the fact that she had three killer singles on FF, but it sold around 800K.

Oh, right. Well, you could say the lead single will be coming off of Scream & Shout this time. Ooh La La wasn't a real single, it was just a soundtrack song for a kids album. The real last single, Scream & Shout was even bigger than 3 (despite not going #1). Stop making excuses face it ooh la la flopped and yes it was a single.

The Applause video's debut week on Youtube was less than We Can't Stop's 10th week? Ouch.

To be fair, I don't think soundtrack successes are as common as they used to be. I'm not really sure why. In the 80s/90s, it wasn't unusual for a song from a soundtrack to hit #1, but I'm having a hard time thinking of the last soundtrack single to hit #1. Even Adele, with her millions of singles and albuims sold, didn't have huge success with Skyfall.

So Gaga hits #4 (I was wrong about #3 being a lock obviously!). My bet is that is its peak. It will probably roughly maintain its position next week, then after that I'm betting on a pretty quick fall.
Bring on single #2, and let's hope it's about something a little more universal than being an adored superstar.
And huge kudos to Lana Del Rey for having her first top ten!

1. Right Round: 636,000 + 460,000 = 1,096,000 2. Born This Way = 448,000 + 509,000 = 957,000 3. Roar: 557,000 + 392,000 = 949,000 4. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together: 623,000 + 307,000 = 930,000
Very nice two week total! Am I forgetting someone?

#4 for Applause! That's great! I think that will be its peak, but that's no slouch.
as for Katy/BL, the good news for next week is that Roar is on power on z100 and BL is not. So I expect the AI gap to significantly reduce this whole next week.

It is SO NICE to see two of the past few years' most popular acts, Lana Del Rey and Avicii, finally breaking through on the charts in the same week.

Are there sales numbers for Wrecking Ball? "Wrecking Ball" only has a days-worth of sales for this week's chart, right?

I'm actually surprised the gap between BL and Katy increased from 3% to 13%. Katy will definitely eat that up next week, but it really speaks to just how massive Blurred Lines is/was. Blurred lines appears to still almost be double the #3 song in total pts.

Are there sales numbers for Wrecking Ball? By comparing the songs performance on iTunes against Blurred Lines, it sold 68,000 copies on Sunday. By doing the same thing with Berzerk, it looks like it sold 38,000 copies on Tuesday and 88,000 copies today. These numbers will count for next week's chart.

Blurred lines appears to still almost be double the #3 song in total pts. i'm not surprised, given the sales decline. If they had not taken down the single from iTunes, it would probably be like 10%. But they made the right decision, cuz they had to do it sometime, and they figured BL was going to be #1 anyways. Better switch things this week than next week!

The "Applause" video did premiere on Good Morning America- so one view may have been enough for some. I myself haven't watched it again since that time.

Next week it will a closer race between "Blurred Lines" and "Roar".
Prediction based on the (not so accurate) formula:
"Blurred Lines" = 230,000/12 + 210,000,000/7,500 + 5,600,000/450 = 59,611 "Roar" = 430,000/12 + 90,000,000/7,500 + 5,800,000/450 = 60,722

Here's a question -- will streaming of the live VMA performances be factored in next week?
If they counted Harlem Shake fan videos I'm assuming that it would, right?
This should probably benefit Miley quite a bit as it's all anyone seems to be talking about online right now.
