great point and couldnt agree more. That 2001-04/05 era was positively infested with not just rap and hip hop (briefly the new 'pop') but BAD rap and hip hop. Absolutely sh*tty songs for the most part that get next to no recurrent airplay. And yes, it was the peak of radio controlling everything (again w/out ANY variety). Dance/pop was more dead on US radio during that time than disco was by 1983. Ill never forget when 'Everytime We Touch' went top 10 in 2006 and You're Beautiful and Bad Day hit #1 (two non rap/hip hop songs sung by white British guys lol) in the same year what a big deal it was lol. Showed the radio was slowly starting to mix it up again. It was simply a strange period w/ the biggest lack of diversity ever. There was clearly a backlash which was why by 2007 digital singles exploded and the charts were way more similar to today than just 3 years before.

Love that 1-2-3 punch of synthpop in 1983's top 3!

Also, when airplay-only tracks weren't eligible for the Hot 100, a number of R&B/hip-hop tracks charted decently in 1998, when their Hot 100 Airplay showing wasn't the greatest (before urban stations were added to the mix). But that wasn'[t so much an urban dominance so much as it was labels withholding the hits from retail and, in turn, the Hot 100. On the flip side, look at all the hits on the black singles chart, that didn't fare the best on the Hot 100, back in the 80s and early 90s (not sure about pre-80s). So, it's like, the hip-hop dominance was making up for the past, when urban music wasn't burning up the charts, as a whole.

But Daniel Powter is Canadian not British I love it when all these European songs become huge in the US (STIUTK last year, Let Her Go by Passenger and Wake Me Up)

So many huge number two singles last year - Payphone, Wide Awake, Lights!
And I love Where is the Love? from 10 years ago, the song that put BEP on the map! And Beyonce smashing her solo career with two MEGA hits in the top 10!
And Torn climbing back up after 11 weeks at #1 on Radio Songs? SMASH! Even passing The Boy Is Mine (I'm pretty shocked that wasn't an airplay number one considering how huge it was on the Hot 100)

So people in the know what is the prediction for #1 on Thursday Robin Thicke or Katy Perry? Well.... (278M - 97M) x 0.81 ~ 146M AI separating the 2. Streaming is almost identical. So if Katy sells over 175k (roughly) more than him, she'll have the #1. Super close. Next week is surely on lock for Katy with BL tumbling now. He's not going to gain anymore. He's onto the next single.

If Katy wasn't involved, I'd say it would've gotten a free ride until Britney came, which would've been 15 or 16, or possibly even 17.

I agree but he'd still need an entire month (4 more weeks just to tie One Sweet Day) and if Eninems song gets insane 1st week #s followed by a video in the next week or two, he couldve also prevented him from getting another month at #1. The true test will be to see if he falls to #2 this or next week how many he stays there (if he does). If he stays at #2 for the next 5+ weeks, then if it wasn't for Katy, he def. would broken the record which would be a pity that he didn't. It's almost better if he falls out of the top 2 in the next few weeks so he doesnt have to say '"if only etc.."

It's ridiculous to say if so and so didn't release a song that BL would stay at #1 for 16+ weeks. That's like saying if I Gotta Feeling was released 2 or 3 weeks before it was that it would have been at #1 for 16 or 17 weeks. In music, there are always extenuating circumstances that can effect any huge hits chart run at the top.

I agree, but at the same time some weeks are more competitive than others and peak position (number 1, 2 or 3; reaching top ten or peaking at 11, 12) can be determined by pure luck. Also, it's pretty much impossible to say whether a #3 hit is always bigger than a song peaking at #6 or not. It depends on so many things.
