Chart Highlights: Robin Thicke Links Year's Longest Pop Songs Reign With 'Blurred Lines'
The song, already the Billboard Hot 100's longest leader of 2013 (11 weeks to date), commands the Pop Songs airplay tally for an eighth frame.
Pop Songs *** No. 1 (8 weeks)*** "Blurred Lines" Robin Thicke Featuring T.I. + Pharrell
With an eighth week at No. 1 on Pop Songs for "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, Miley Cyrus' duet partner at the MTV Video Music Awards last night Robin Thicke rewrites the longest reign on the chart this year, passing the seven-week rule of Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." "Lines" logs the longest lead since Interscope Records labelmate Maroon 5 also stacked eight weeks on top with "One More Night" last year. No song has spent more time at No. 1 since Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" (nine weeks, 2008).
Greatest Gainer No. 19 "Wake Me Up!" Avicii Debut No. 30 "Hold On, We're Going Home" Drake Featuring Majid Jordan Debut No. 38 "Slow Down" Selena Gomez Debut No. 39 "Can't Believe It" Flo Rida Featuring Pitbull Debut No. 40 "Miss Movin' On" Fifth Harmony
-
"Blurred Lines", the biggest pop hit of 2013? :'(

Why is this Lorde song (I don't even know if you'd call it a song or talking with some music in the background) doing so well?

5 5 Into You - Fabolous ft. Tamia or Ashanti
^ 10 years ago!! Absolute classic. Such a beautiful song imo.
2008's top 10 was okay, but it's rather pop-dominated. I prefer 2013's chart hits to 2008's.

Since we're discussing what we liked in the past... 1 year ago (9/8/12) 1 1 We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift (2nd week of 3 @ #1) 2 2 Whistle - Flo Rida 3 3 Lights - Ellie Goulding 4 9 One More Night - Maroon 5 5 6 Some Nights - fun. 6 4 Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen 7 5 Wide Awake - Katy Perry 8 7 Payphone - Maroon 5 ft. Wiz Khalifa 9 13 Good Time - Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen 10 8 As Long As You Love Me - Justin Bieber ft. Big Sean I like the entire top ten from last year! :o Three of them haven't aged the best with me (both M5 tracks & GT), but I still enjoy them. 5 years ago (9/6/08) 2 1 Disturbia - Rihanna 3 3 Forever - Chris Brown 4 4 I Kissed A Girl - Katy Perry 8 9 Closer - Ne-Yo 9 - So What - P!nk 10 8 Take A Bow - Rihanna I used to like "Forever," but I can only listen to it like once every few months. 10 years ago (9/6/03) 1 3 Shake Ya Tailfeather - Nelly, P. Diddy & Murphy Lee (1st week of 4 @ #1) 2 1 Crazy In Love - Beyonce ft. Jay-Z 3 2 Right Thurr - Chingy 6 6 Get Low - Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz ft. Ying Yang Twins 8 8 Unwell - Matchbox 20 9 12 Baby Boy - Beyonce ft. Sean Paul 10 9 Where Is The Love? - Black Eyed Peas Despite what everyone seems to be saying, I actually like the top ten from last decade. I don't actually love "Right Thurr," but it is catchy. "Get Low" is only good in crowds, lol. 15 years ago (9/5/98) 1 - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith (1st week of 4 @ #1) 6 7 You're Still The One - Shania Twain So, like, most of them I didn't even recognize. Hot 100 Airplay from 15 years ago 2 2 I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Aerosmith 3 4 You're Still The One - Shania Twain 4 5 Torn - Natalie Imbruglia 6 7 Just The Two Of Us - Will Smith Not bad.

I think what a lot of chart-watchers are talking about (when they complain about the 2001 -> 2005 Hot 100) is not so much the songs, but the lack of diversity.
When 80% of the top 20 is Hip-Hop, there is something wrong. If it were 80% Rock, or Country, it would be the same argument. Never before or after in recorded history - even when the rock or disco eras were at their peak - was there such a chart stranglehold of one genre.
And the chart results of the eras pre-2001 (with retail singles) and post-2004 (with digital singles) have confirmed that this time period was an anomaly.
