Whoever takes offense to Katy Perry dressing up as an Egyptian in her music video needs to get a life and find more important things to worry about. Stop creating issues where there are none.

I like the song and the video but I feel like this is karma since she trashed other artists in the past about certain videos. What I'm saying is, if you want to act like you're above being controversial, don't be a hypocrite and present yourself in a similar manner.
So while I don't find the video offensive, I'm glad that people are starting to question her intentions.

ARE YOU PEOPLE TRYING TO KILL THE SONG?!?! Seriously, stop the controversy! It's just a fun and catchy video with pretty colors and skillful imagery use. This. And all the underlying comments good or bad which I respect is really much ado about nothing. The song and video are going to hang around for a while so enjoy it while we have it.

I think for me and others is not about one action but the accumulation of acts. It's reached a tipping point to me and from being neutral I'm starting to approach the dislike area. As some have said she started with LGBT, then she put herself as a purist criticizing Gaga, then she did LFN, performances and comments not sensitive toward other cultures, then the whole witch burning/ dark imagery / Egyptian mocking / black imagery / cannibal naming all in a single song (!) I remember there was a big uproar about No Doubt's Looking Hot video and criticism of cultural insensitivity that led to its cancellation. I'm glad that the Native American community protested and made their voice heard. There's no clear voice in the case of DH video though I guess

Or...people could just stop being racially (culturally, sexually, etc) insensitive. Is not being an asshole too much? Well yeah we could.... But one can be offended by anything... The same people complaining are some of the same fans of madonna and others who made a career out of being deliberately offensive and in your face. Its not an actual offense taken. Its phony. Taking your sentiment a step further we could also not be an asshole and not be hypocritical about the issue/offese or we could also not be an asshole and decide not to pretend to be offended by something we arent actually offended by or we could not be an asshole and spend our energy on something more useful than being offended by a Katy Perry video that one has any reason to be offended by... Im not saying there are not times when taking offense isnt justified. I just think this isnt one of those times... I can find something offensive in songs/videos in every artists catalogue far and away more offensive than this one that these same offended and uncomfortable posters/people like and never made a peep about. At the end if the day this seems less like and offense and more like h8rs piling on trying to find something to bring katy down... Keep in mind many of these same people were advocating for DH to be released as a single in the first place even when KP and others objected to it...on the grounds that it might be offensive. Now they are claiming they are "offended". Stay offended. Stay mad. Waste time being angry and uncomfortable. Realize that this type of behavior further white washes radio of other cultures and limits the artistry of the music itself for fear someone might be offended.

I, personally, was not offended by the video. I, however, can understand why some people may be offended by the video. You, personally, do not get to decide what is offensive or not for someone else.
Just because there are more offensive examples, it does not void any potential offensiveness of this.
Additionally, given soblu's history as a poster, I'm more inclined to believe that there is actual offense made rather than the "hater" argument. If the "hater" argument is the best thing you have to fall back on, you really have no argument at all.

Additionally, given soblu's history as a poster, I'm more inclined to believe that there is actual offense made rather than the "hater" argument. If the "hater" argument is the best thing you have to fall back on, you really have no argument at all. I know. That is why it was not the only argument I made in my post yet you still tried to reference it like it was the only argument I made in my post. I knew someone would try to take on this line of attack to distract from the full force and substance of my argumentS. Read the post again, get the full context, and realize I made a number of arguments about why the offense and outrage is phony at best. Secondly I stated many of those who are complaining cheered for this already potentially offensive song to be released as a single in the first place even when Katy tried to avoid releasing the song at all and are now coming back and saying OMG the video is offensive. That is a hater type of move no matter whether you are in denial or not. You can say "well there is no argument there because he mentioned h8rs" but the fact that you felt the need to address it means that there is logic there. It also means you are just trying to keep people from actually considering what I said in full....by trying to dumb the post down. I also said stated offense is being presented as an opportunity for haters to pile on. At the end of the day anyone can be offended by anything these people sing about and create videos about that doesn't mean the rest of us have to agree and that we shouldn't challenge the legitimacy of said offense. Poster history has nothing to do with this video being offensive or not. I'm not even sure why that was brought up as a point. Its a distraction from the substance of my arguments...ie in plural....and doesn't add anything worth while to the discussion. Secondly it also distracts from the point I made where there are better times and places to be offended by anything. Am I do assume that because you didn't address the rest of the substance of my arguments in plural that those are in fact valid arguments.

I think people are offended by the video imagery only - not the song. No they aren't. They are trying to make the video their moment. They are not actually offended. Its phony and fake. It's like Christians being offended by gays because they want to "protect the children and the family" etc... It's a means to obscure their dislike of KP....so they don't overtly appear to be h8ing. It's fine to dislike KP or her songs or her videos but don't try to disguise it as some high minded attempt to be inoffensive.... Also note the last sentence of my earlier post in which I stated it's fine to continue to be offended by everything just realize that you are limiting the artistry and furthering the whitewashing of radio from other cultures.

Dark Horse down to #2 on the Hot 100.
"Happy" takes over atop the Hot 100 despite added streaming points for Perry's "Dark Horse" (1-2), whose official video was released on Feb. 20. "Horse" posts a second week at No. 1 on Radio Songs (150 million, up 5%), while the clip's premiere spurs the track's return to the top of Streaming Songs (3-1; 11.6 million, up 86%), netting it the Hot 100's Streaming Gainer ribbon; the song had first ruled Streaming Songs four weeks ago. "Horse" leads the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (2.9 million U.S. streams, down 2%, according to BDS) for a seventh week. On Digital Songs, which it led for five weeks, "Horse" holds at No. 2 (251,000, down 9%).
The "Happy" and "Horse" race to the top of the Hot 100 was close again this week. Last week, "Horse" won over "Happy" by a tight 5% overall points margin. This week, with "Happy" up by 26% and "Horse" up by 15%, the former crosses the finish line first with a similarly slim 4% lead. (Likely further aiding Williams' cause next week: he'll perform "Happy" at the Oscars on Sunday (March 2). The track is nominated for best original song.)

I'm all for being racially sensitive with all the racist bull thrown at immigrants and anyone with brown skin on a daily basis. However, I doubt Katy knew what that symbol was. Let's be real here, she's not the brightest crayon in the box. She should spin this and just re-shoot a newer video since the video did blow chunks.

Also note the last sentence of my earlier post in which I stated it's fine to continue to be offended by everything just realize that you are limiting the artistry and furthering the whitewashing of radio from other cultures. Your one-sided hyperbole strikes again! Now that you've decided how a certain group of posters all feel, let me pontificate that you and others whining with such staunch superiority are only acting blind out of your love for the song and Katy's year-end chart points on the Hot 100 (...and, lbr, your personal charts, too). Once again, I don't have much of a problem with the "Dark Horse" video by itself other than the fact that it totally sucks, but it seems undeniable to me that the girl hops from one culture/group to the next to serve a truly basic and shallow aesthetic on a whim, and I think it is painting a portrait of ignorance and insensitivity. And I also don't like her (though I LOVE this song), and while I don't think those are as connected as the elementary black-and-white way you are depicting, I do think it makes it easier to call BS. I also can't think of a recent pop star that has used other cultures and groups as disposably (f**k off with that squiggly red line I'm making it a word, dammit) as she has. If you don't expect that to rouse up discussion and anger in real life, let alone a message board built upon the discussion of everything from the most mundane details to overarching trends and theories, you're...well, you've been around too long and you're too old to not know this is true, so you're just being ignorant for the sake of baiting arguments. Which is just sort of your way.

How has she disrespected anyone's culture? People called ignorance on her Japan-inspired Unconditionally performance because some of the slits on her dress weren't long/short enough, which was probably just customized for better movement. People called ignorance on her Dark Horse video for the usage of bright colors such as pink (which I don't like myself but only because the color is ugly anyway) and blue but even experienced historics have said Egyptians used these colors in the prime of the culture too. People call discrimination and blasphemy because one of the suitors in the video wears a chain that says Allah in Arabic that appears for literally one second in the video, I wasn't even paying attention in the slightest to the plethora of random chains that guy was wearing.
Yes, she has been using cultural references a lot recently and yes I don't think it's necessary either, but she's at least depicting them with beautiful visuals and IMO helping certain culture's beauty reach more people's eyes. Are people seriously claiming Katy Perry is discriminating cultures/religions on purpose when those same people don't hesitate for a moment to call her the safest pop girl ever? Very conflicting.
This "controversy" is such an overblown eyesore

She's misrepresenting the cultures of other groups for personal, financial gain.
Those examples you've provided only illustrate your limited scope of the situations. If you honestly think those were the prime arguments for why she was being culturally insensitive, then I advise you to take a moment, reflect, and come to a different conclusion.
Think of it this way. Katy had an issue with Gaga's ALEJANDRO video. It appeared that her argument was that Gaga was misrepresenting Christian religious imagery (a culture of which Katy is personally connected) for her own gain. I believe she called it blasphemous and cheap. Is Katy not doing the same to other cultures? Is it also not insensitive and cheap?

She's essentially a hypocrite for expressing her disapproval on something and essentially doing the same thing herself.

Here's the thing: if you guys are going to constantly brag about "THE IMPACT!!!" that Katy Perry has because she's so huge and culturally relevant and all, you also have to accept when people question that impact and feel it's pushing forward negativity. You don't have to agree with it, but it's beyond hyperbolic to spend all of your days chanting how Katy Perry is the most popular person in the free world and then back down and say "it's just a video!" when people criticize her work. Katy Perry is indeed a very popular and influential star and if people feel her video is racially insensitive, that's a big deal and it shouldn't just be brushed off. It's not just a "video". Pop culture defines our society and our interpretations of people and if those interpretations are offending than that's something that needs to be addressed.

This is probably the best line in these discussions in regards to potentially offensive videos and the idea that if this is offensive, it's worth it to get down to it to find out why and to try to avoid making the same mistake again.

Gaga had a crucifix painted on her crotch and paraded it around for a lenghty period of time in a lengthy music video. The blasphemy people are chanting about in the Dark Horse video is, like I said, a guy getting zapped who happens to be wearing a chain that says Allah that is noticeable for 1 second in the video.
