My own personal definition is that a song is a 'real' single when it is sent for adds at radio OR if radio starts picking the song up heavily enough that it becomes at least a top 20 hit on one or more formats (enough airplay that most casual listeners would hear it at least a couple times a week). Some might find that too heavily radio-based, which would be ironic coming from someone who thinks radio is still weighted way too heavily in the Hot 100 formula. But it plays to the traditional notion that when labels really wanted to sell a song (and by extension, an album), they did so by sending a song to radio for maximum exposure. I think labels still adhere to this tradition. There are some songs that end up taking off based on a commercial or internet buzz, but if those songs really become a force radio eventually picks up on them anyway.
Anything else feels merely promotional to me - countdown singles, songs that the artist makes a video for but doesn't 'officially' release, songs that get featured in commercials, youtube meme songs, etc. Those songs do promote the artist in some way but it doesn't seem as narrowly focused on specifically promoting just that song. This technically means "Harlem Shake" isn't a single in my book, funny enough.

I have a few questions: -Where will "Dark Horse" debut? -Where will "Lolly" debut? -Where will "TKO" debut? -Where will "The Fox" be next week? "Dark Horse" should have a good debut digitally around 200k, but nearly no airplay and low streaming will hold it back. Probably around the 15-25 range. Billboard mentioned it could debut top ten, but I don't see that happening with it slipping so much digitally in the past few days. "Lolly" will probably debut in the same area. It will have lower sales, but slightly higher airplay and streaming. "TKO" will probably debut somewhat low due to the mid-week release. Probably around the upper 40s/lower 30s. "The Fox" has lost steam in streaming, but has digital sales coming into play this week, but digital sales are nowhere near what people were expecting. I'd venture to say somewhere in the 12-17 range.

The key word now is "promotion"... I think the definition of a "single" depends on the era. Airplay-only hits weren't singles in the 1990's, but by 2003 terms they all would have been. Actually I view the seminal date as Dec. 1998 when Billboard so graciously :) "allowed" songs that didn't have a physical single to chart. Regarding the single v track, I view the term "single" the same as "album." The term "album" has remained the same - a collection of songs on one release whether vinyl, 8-track, cassette, cd or digital. It's understood that "single" applies when the song is actively promoted to radio or radio decides to play a track - like the aforementioned :My Humps" and dropping the promoted one "Don't Lie." I believe it's pretty obvious which songs are singles and which ones are tracks.

The popular definition in this thread puts a lot of emphasis on radio. Radio has less emphasis on music promotion now than it did, even last year. The Hot 100 rule changes seem to reflect that. Radio is not the only game in town. Even if it is, how much airplay is needed before it becomes a 'single'? I think I saw top 20, in at least one format listed above. That definition also rules out lots of radio songs that get 'promoted' and bomb out before reaching the top 20.
It has been acknowledged this rules out a lot of other songs as 'singles' . Harlem Shake, Gangnam Style (probably) and now The Fox.
The Fox recently charted based only on streaming and without any sales and airplay component(It has a sales component now though). The first that I know of.
A prime example though that radio is not the only way to promote a song.
It also rules out songs released to iTunes with the 'single' tag that are not yet tied to an album. These may or may not get radio airplay at a current or future date and may not get enough to meet this definition even at that.
Beyond forums such as this though, whether it is a 'single' or a 'track', it does not mean much. The charts do not separate them.

I think we can spend all day trying to define what a single is, but in the end it all comes down to common sense. I believe everyone here is aware of the fact that California Gurls and Fireworks are singles and that Circle the Drain is not on the same group as those.

Yeah...
I wasn't trying to put on emphasis on the radio. Promotion today would be geared towards the video and single tag on iTunes... Earlier, I was referencing that the radio determined what was a single due to the depletion of the physical product.

175k... One hundred... seventy-five... thousand... ...for Britney Spears... O.Name 10 artists from 1998-1999 era that can score these numbers in 2013? (and JT was part of N Sync back then) Britney Spears has been relevant for almost 15 years, not so many pop artists remain relevant on top 40 radio for so long.. It's not fair to put Britney in the same league as newer, hottest artists right now IMO but whatever, I guess the standard remains high for her.

Britney Spears is not some random artist from the late 90s that doesn't score hits anymore. She's as relevant now as any other hot artist. Her last lead single opened up with well over 400k, but this one isn't going to open up with even 200k? This is a "Run the World (Girls)" type of flop, and I'm calling it out as such. This is literally no different than if "Roar" opened up with 175k.

I think Britney's WB will be like Applause. A slow start, but will become a radio hit...

As far as Britney's new one is concerned...it is not smashing but not exactly flopping either. I'd call the response to it a bit tepid, to be fair. I have listened several times now on youtube. At first I thought...cool, catchy track. On further listens, it becomes evident that first of all, this song breaks absolutely no new ground for her, and secondly, she's basically just talking on most of the track. The instrumental is propulsive and bouncy, but also repetitive and does not stand out from all the other EDM out there. Just my $.02.

It's obvious that there are one too many WB titles out right now- just one can be a big hit.

MILEY CYRUS – Wrecking Ball: 36.144 (+3.084) BRITNEY SPEARS – Work Bitch: 34.189 (+3.653) And they are the only songs with 'red update' today. I think they can co-exist. They're not Harry and Voldemort or opponents in Hunger Games.

I dont even think 175 is disappointing at all. For a first single, maybe but the number is a norm for Britney. Britney is a consistent digital seller, but her numbers arent stellar and they never were. Womanizer and Circus debuted just above 200k. S&S debuted with 190k sales. Her other singles from the FF era bar HIAM sold slightly above 100k. Lets not pretend she sells like Katy or Rihanna or other divas. Her biggest hits "only" sold above 3M. I'm not saying shes not capable because I think shes capable of selling more. But its better to actually compare this single to how her other singles did and not some other artist. A top 20 debut is not bad.

So..it's WB or Roar next week? lol It is very close to determine which will take the no.1 spot this week.... Wrecking Ball will surely lead the streaming and maybe the on-demand while Roar has a very huge lead in radio and also in sales.... But I hope Katy would dethrone WB and seat @ no.1 once again

I would rather have a new #1 if Wrecking Ball cant stay for a second week. Roar had it's time, it's a lame song and over in my book. Never been a Katy fan anyhow.

Wrecking Ball
Sales: 295k / 12 = 24583 Airplay: 34000M / 7,500 = 4533 Streaming: 15M / 450 = 33333 >> Points: 62449
Roar
Sales: 300k / 12 = 25000 Airplay: 159400M / 7,500 = 21253 Streaming: 6.5M / 450 = 14444 >> Points: 60697
"Wrecking Ball" should remain at the top spot if it sold at least 275k.
