In 1998: Hot 100 Airplay > Hot 100 I'm more familiar with what top 40 radio played in the 90s, there was almost no hip-hop/r&b playing in pop stations back then except for crossover artists like Mariah Carey, TLC, Boyz II Men, etc. Kind of an odd week to make that observation, since the Hot 100 top ten posted contains nine songs that impacted Pop during their chart runs. The Dru Hill song is the only one that didn't do much of anything in that respect.

Yeah, I noticed that, but I wanted to post this a while ago lol There were weeks that I didn't recognize more than half of the top 10 on the Hot 100.

Nice to see the top 10 chart debuts of Kylie and Ace Of Base happening this week.
Did "Downtown" get major radio action the same time the Human Nature mix of "Right Here" was big? Can't imagine "Downtown" being huge on radio today!

I'm digging the '93 and '83 top 10s (I have a very soft spot for that AIr Supply song). Cool to see Jim Steinman in the top 10 a decade apart.

Me, too- Love me some Air Supply schmaltz. "Making Love..." was one of the duo's "loudest" tunes thanks to Steinman).

In 1988 two "Dont be cruel"songs in the top 10 at the same time. Has that ever happened before? I know bobby browns version is different than cheap tricks but still the same song title.

Between 1968-1973 is when The Carpenters dominated, so they should start appearing soon.

02 02 08 Be My Baby - The Ronettes Imo, this is without a doubt, one of the greatest records ever. This is Specter's absolute masterpiece, despite all the other gems he helped create. It may just be my favorite record of the 60s.

Top 10 flashbacks for this week How about some time capsule comments?! (I've only ever did this once before and it got really good feedback. Let's try it again!) Setting: Person from October 2013 travels back in time to October 2008 to let people in on what the future of music entails. 1. Oh, so this is the week "Live Your Life" shot to #1! I remember that! T.I. slayed all by occupying the top two positions at once. Well, "Live Your Life" is also going straight to #1 on pop, fyi. T.I. will also score another smash from this album, but for some reason he disappears off the face of the Earth after it. That is, until summer of 2013 when he lays down a rap verse for one of the biggest hits ever. (Brought to you from Robin Thicke, btw. lol) 2. Ah, "So What"! This is a nice era for P!nk and her fans. "So What" hits #1, and then the two follow-up singles are top ten hits on pop radio. The fourth single will flop, though, but don't fret... she'll score two smashes with her greatest hits album and then her seventh album will score the biggest hit of her career. 3. AH, "Disturbia"! Flawless #1 smash here. Will be remembered every Halloween by pop fans. Although, dark times are coming for your precious Riri. First, the flop of the GGGB era is coming next. Then some lovely beats will be laid down. Then prepare yourself for a new Rihanna album. Then prepare yourself for a new Rihanna album. Then prepare yourself for a new Rihanna album. Then prepare yourself for a new Rihanna album. 4. Hey, it's Kevin Rudolf! Despite having a pretty solid debut album, his next single will flop. His lead from his second album will do decently, though. 5. omg, it's Katy Perry! I believe the last time I went back in time, y'all were crying "one hit wonder" with "I Kissed a Girl" and I told y'all you were absurd. "Hot N Cold" is smashing, as you can see. The next single won't do that well, but the fourth single will. Then prepare yourselves for Teenage Dream. Records will be broken (and tied) left and right! She will go eight (yes, EIGHT) singles deep that era. The follow-up era's lead single will smash even harder. 6. Hey, look, it's one of Xtina's few hits in the past five years! Yeah, things just "Keep Gettin' Worse" for the poor girl. The next album's lead single races up the chart and dies faster than "Gimme More" and "Never Again." Nothing else will be note worthy from that album. Then she'll score a spot as a judge on a singing competition and be a part of a HUGE smash hit with Maroon 5. Then she'll fade into obscurity again with her next album, despite the singles from it actually being pretty good. (All she is going to want to do is love your body.) 7. OH T-Pain! Yeah, he thankfully fades away fast after this one. Good riddance. 8. M.I.A.'s one hit! Good for her. But, yeah, after this one, she disappears. She does get to perform at the halftime show for the SuperBowl in a few years, though! With Madoona, even. And some weird chick who has yet to grace you with her presence. Beware Nicki Minaj. She's coming. 9. Oh, Nickelback...

Im just going to disagree with your statement outright.

Yeah, the Airplay chart was still essentially just Pop & select HAC/AC stations at the time. Waiting all the way until the end of 1998 to change it to an all format chart was possibly Billboard's slowest adjustment ever to the Hip-Hop & Alternative explosions of the 90s.

Hot 100 Airplay was so random back then.
Its like between 1993 (when they added AC, HAC, and Modern Rock to the Top 40 Mainstream & Rhythmic mix) and late 1998 (when everything was included), it was ill-defined.
Of course, that's the 1990s for you; Everything back then was ill-defined - from radio formats to single formats to chart regulations to musical genres.

I liked everythig being a bit undefined because you had more room to experiment with the audiences tastes and you could appeal to a potentially broader demographic. Artists and record companies need hits to generate sales ... If people have more eclectic tastes you sell more records as a whole instead of when urban can only be hard core urban and pop cant play anything thats too urban and on and on.... Stations should be less concerned with labels and more concerned with playing great music.

Top 10 from 35, 30, 25, and 20 years ago: 10/21/7801 01 Kiss You All Over - Exile (4th and final week at #1)02 02 Hot Child In The City - Nick Gilder 03 03 Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste Of Honey 04 05 Reminiscing - Little River Band 05 06 You Needed Me - Anne Murray 06 08 Whenever I Call You "Friend" - Kenny Loggins w/Stevie Nicks 07 07 Love Is In The Air - John Paul Young 08 11 MacArthur Park - Donna Summer 09 04 Don't Look Back - Boston 10 09 Summer Nights - John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John & The Cast Of GreaseI'm not sure I know all of these, but the ones I do know are all nice. What a fantastic top 10! And that top 2 is funny since Steinman was behind them both and the [excellent] melodies of those two songs are very similar. This is another solid top 10, though some of that due to nostalgia. Wow! This is a seriously great top 10. I like all of the songs, and there is nice diversity as well. It's interesting, too, because I assume Billy Joel was in his 40s there and Meat Loaf may have been as well. A solo male in his 40s cannot get play like that now.

Love CNN pushing some story that "Royals" is actually a racist song. Sad, really that news organizations like that look for ways to divide us. Because, you know, a NZ is all caught up in US race relations.

Paramore top 20!! Yay! Good for them, but to me is points out the odd failure of "#Beautiful" at radio even more. The digital sales for "#B" stayed in the top 20 for 10 weeks. Paramore are lagging behind that yet the song is still being allowed to grow at radio. So frustrating the same wasn't done for "#B."

^Hayley Williams is a mere 24 years old. Enough said. :) Aside from that important factor, callout scores may be better for the track.

Billboard.com:
Over on the Digital Songs chart, Lorde retains the No. 1 slot with "Royals," selling another 309,000 (up 5%). Katy Perry's "Roar" is steady at No. 2 with 218,000 (down 9%) and Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is also a non-mover at No. 3 with 214,000 (down 3%).
Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" is stationary at No. 4 with 167,000 (down 8%) while Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" (featuring Majid Jordan) jumps 13-5 with 131,000 (up 64%).
Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Justin Timberlake," rises one rung to No. 6 with 118,000 (down 4%) and Eminem's "Berzerk" dips two slots to No. 7 with 115,000 (down 14%).
Perry debuts at No. 8 with "Walking On Air" (113,000) -- the third pre-release track from her "Prism" album. It follows the set's first official single "Roar," and "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J). The latter song slips 8-10 this week with 99,000 (down 5%).
With those three placings, Perry is the first artist with three songs in the top 10 of the Digital Songs chart in almost a year. The last act to do so was Taylor Swift on the Nov. 3, 2012-dated chart, when she ranked in the top 10 with "State of Grace" (debuting at No. 2), "I Knew You Were Trouble" (falling 1-4 in its second week) and then-current official single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (down 7-8 in its 10th week).
Like Perry, Swift achieved the feat because of pre-release tracks from her album "Red." In addition to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," "I Knew You Were Trouble" and "State of Grace," Swift issued two more pre-release cuts from the album -- its title track and "Begin Again."
Back in this week's top 10, Lady Gaga's "Applause" descends 6-9 with 109,000 (down 18%).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 19.81 million downloads, down 2% compared with last week (20.29 million) and down 15% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (23.31 million). Year to date track sales are at 994.41 million, down 4% compared to the same total at this point last year (1.03 billion).

my god if Roar had ANY Urban/Urban AC support (which it understandably doesnt lol) It would easily surpass WBT (most likely not Blurred Lines) but it def. wouldve made Katy the female with the biggest radio hit of all time. Regardless, although I dont love the song it def. grew on me and I never turn it off..at least yet and her airplay #s are amazing considering it didn't cross over into other major key formats (like Blurred Lines did). Also, I'm reeally surprised at Gagas continued decent/very good updates. The 'surprise' is simply based on my opinion of the song itself... nothing else. Just leave it at that lol.

In 1998: Hot 100 Airplay > Hot 100 I'm more familiar with what top 40 radio played in the 90s, there was almost no hip-hop/r&b playing in pop stations back then except for crossover artists like Mariah Carey, TLC, Boyz II Men, etc. The hot 100 airplay wasnt even an accurate representation of what was being played to the point billboard was forced to change the charts around by late 1998. Im just going to disagree with your statement outright. Well to me top 40 radio was more important than skewed Hot 100 in the 90s, that's why I approve of the Hot 100 airplay. I didn't like they mixed it up after Dec. 1998 with all of the stations, the H100 airplay turned into a mess in the 2000s where only rhythmic/hip-hop/r&b dominated. The top 40 even if it had a rhythmic influence going on after 2001, it was far more diverse as well. Billboard.com: Over on the Digital Songs chart, Lorde retains the No. Is "Roar" approaching 3 million? and how much has sold "Applause"? Sales seem to be so low overall, can't wait for Christmas time lol.

Maybe next week ROAR will get 3 million if she would sell around 200k.... her previous sales were 557K, 392K, 448K, 377K, 331K, 301K, 239K, and 218K..... so probably she already get 2,863,000 downloads already so she already need 137K more.... :) and for applause I think it is around 1.1 to 1.3 million downloads already.

At this rate, Roar will be near 5 million after the X-mas card effect at the very least.

^ Agree, it will stuck at around 5 million though and don't think it will pass "Firework" or "E.T.". But who knows? It's a monster hit in every aspect.
