What "new rules"? Anybody got an article that says they are now defining what a #1 is differently. The list posed has always been that way, before any "new rules"

Combing for those purposes does make it confusing/tricky, hence why Billboard doesn't bother. ha

like i asked in the Monster thread, if this goes to #1 Rihanna will or will NOT be included? As I also said, its def. more of a duet than 'featuring' lol. So, if they wouldve dropped the 'feat' part and made it Em AND Rihanna, that would give her equal credit? No doubt someone on Rihannas team (either way) is on this like white on rice this very second lol cause this song def. reeks from a future #1. Rihannas versus are VERY prominent and make the song. It would be counted as a #1 for her by Billboard (if it happens). But because it is a featuring, she will only get 30% of the points for it, and Eminem will get the other 70%. On the other hand, according to chart archivist Joel Whitburn, it would not be considered a #1 for her. So it varies based on who is doing the compiling. Huh? Was there a new 'rule' recently and officially implemented? Just a bit confused as youre saying Billboard would count it but not Joel Whitburn lol. I'm assuming Billboard (obviously what's more important) would count it and it would it just be Joel who 'personally' wouldnt credit her? Isnt he the one who (a few years ago) had that long article about Elvis only having 17 instead of 18 #1s etc. Even though he works for Billboard and has large role in chart discussions he's not the one actually making 'rules', correct?

I was just pointing out that different archivists might credit it differently. But for your purposes, all you need to know is that yes, Billboard would count it, but she would only get 30% of the points from it. BTW, points become important for artists when Billboard is compiling overall amount of points for each individual artist when they do one of their "Grestest of all time" articles, usually when landmark anniversaries are reached (the last time they did one was for the 55th anniversary of the Hot 100 last summer).

It looks like "Sweeter Than Fiction" dropped off the BBHot100 after only one week.At least "Everything Has Changed" and "Red" are still holding onto spots on the Hot 100. :)

Semantics.
Anyoe can state a "record" or a stat any way they'd like.
There is some attempts which are good attempts to adjust some stats to make them comparable to prior stats.
There is some acknowledgment now that a "featuring" is not the same as a duet, an artist can be "featured on a song and not sing a note. Is Lil Wayne really the most successful male solo artist of all time? Not really, if you downgrade featurings There is some acknowledgment that the Glee Cast 200+ chart "hits" are not comparable to anything that came before it. There is some acknowledgment that the album called Teenage Dream generated six number ones but that is not comparable to anything that came before it so it is referred to as five.

Beatles held the top 5 songs at one point back in the 1960s. There wasnt much competition then so....What an erroneous assumption. There was plenty of competition back then, the Beatles just steam rolled over all of it when they arrived on the chart. They were that popular in the early months of 1964, when they literally changed the face of popular music almost overnight. They also set off the British Invasion, and pop music in the United States was literally never the same. Like i said there was no competition. There wasnt as many genres or artists or things to compete with peoples attention.

Might be confusing fragmentation of genres and more media outlets (youtube, itunes, etc) with more competition?
Song turnover was higher then than it is now

Eminem has done something no artist has done in nearly 50 years.
He has scored four simultaneous hits in Billboard's Hot 100's Top 20 -- all as a lead artist. The last music act to have done that was the Beatles in 1964. Eminem's "Monster" is at No. 3, while "Berzerk," "Survival" and "Rap God" currently rank at 15, 16 and 17, respectively.

YouTube and such wasn't part of the mix last Halloween, so that could have boosted things for "Thriller." That video was and is a cultural phenomenon, so it got a good amount of views last week (it's No. 20 on Streaming Songs).

Among other Halloween-boosted tracks, "Monster Mash" re-entered Recurrents at No. 7 (and debuted at 37 on Streaming Songs), while "Ghostbusters" re-entered the recurrent chart at No. 24.

"Monster Mash" has nothing left to prove. It was already #1 back when it was released, during Halloween 1962, and has also re-entered the chart on a couple of other occasions over the years as well.

The week of the boost, "Baby Blue" debuted on Digital Songs at 32, but did not chart in the top 50 of Streaming Songs. It charted on Recurrents at No. 20.
Am very aware of that, 2m- same thing with "Ghostbusters." "Thriller" doesn't really have anything to "prove," either- not like it's going to get near its initial No. 4 Hot 100 peak.

I remember when Thriller flew up the charts to #4, then stopped. I never understood how that song didn't get to #1. It was huuuuuuuuuge when it was released, because of the video. Todays charts it would have been #1 for months.

7th single. Everyone alreday had the album at least once. It would have done better as the lead single or at least in the first couple
