Christina Aguilera Opens Up About Kissing Madonna at 2003 MTV VMAs: 'I Never Thought Anything of It'
"It wasn't shocking back then. It's not shocking now, to me," Christina Aguilera said
For Christina Aguilera, there was nothing "shocking" about the kiss she shared with Madonna at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.
The "Loyal Brave True" singer, 39, opened up about the famous pop culture moment during a conversation with Apple Music's Zane Lowe on Thursday. While the lip-lock β which also featured Britney Spears β made headlines at the time, Aguilera said she "never thought anything of it."
"Shock value gets more and more extreme or whatever. But honestly, at the time, yeah, I never thought anything of it," she said. "It was like, 'Okay, it's two girls kissing.' "
"It wasn't shocking back then. It's not shocking now, to me. But it's so many things," she continued.
In 2018, Aguilera spoke about the performance and how the press focused more on the kiss between Spears and Madonna, telling SiriusXMβs Radio Andy in 2018 that the media attention "was weird."
"And you know why they cut it? The cut away to get Justin [Timberlake]βs reaction," she said. "I saw the newspaper the next day and it was like, βOh β well I guess I got left out of that one.' "
However, Aguilera said she didn't mind the oversight.
"I mean everything happened so quickly back then and everything was in a whirlwind," she explained. "But I had my own performance that night. It was 'Fighter' and it was with Dave Navarro. It was a kickass performance. So I was okay with that."
During Thursday's interview, Aguilera also spoke about how Madonna has influenced her musical career.
"Madonna, first of all, the queen of reinventing herself, was a huge inspiration," she shared. "When I was little, I was not allowed to listen to her or watch her videos or anything. It was just like a no-no, but then whenever you grow up, and I discovered her catalog and her videos and the fact that she had such a message."
Aguilera said Madonna's Truth or Dare documentary β which gave the world an intimate look at the pop icon's 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour β made her realize that "you don't have to just, quote unquote, sing a song. You literally can just say so much more and go so much deeper."
"Truly, the way you see her image changed through the albums. I mean, that was a big inspiration for me to want to change it up, to want to keep pushing, to grow, to reinvent myself, to discover more things about me and myself as an artist," Aguilera said.
Having worn many different hats in her career, Aguilera said it's important to find a balance between innovation and staying true to yourself.
"You have to keep it fresh and keep it alive for yourself, and the fans feel that energy," she said. "I think that you have to be careful, too, and not just be so receptive to... things that doesn't feel right with you or doesn't align you, because that can also really disempower you and make you disconnected with yourself."
"Actually, that is what can stray you away from really making music for the reasons of why you got into it in the first place, which is the love," Aguilera added.

I remember being VERY impressed at Xtinaβs career from Mi Reflejo to Bionic, despite the few flops/mishaps. I did get the Madonna inspiration with all her changes in looks from Come on over to Nobody wants to be lonely to Pero me acuerdo de ti to Lady marmalade to Dirrrty. And all of these singles had different styles and showed versatility and musical growth. She continued with this evolution throughout Stripped and BTB, showing more versatility than Britney. I think sheβs a bit underappreciated and primarily acknowledged for her strong vocals but not for her strong enough contributions to pop music and entertainment.

Itβs a crime Stripped was left off the greatest albums list. It birthed careers and set a standard for young female artists transitioning to women. Like how can you be considered the top 100 greatest voices of all time and not land a single album on the list? The industry still hates her but Iβm glad she doesnβt give a f**k anymore.

What do you mean the industry hates her? Ever since Stripped the media has been highly critical of her. Starting with βDirrtyβ. It flopped because of the video and the media couldnβt let it go. Calling her a whore and trashing Stripped. She recovered quite a bit with B2B but the media once again went against her with Bionic has been that way ever since. Thereβs just so many examples.

Theyβve gone from criticizing her for being too sexual to then trying too hard to be "artistic" to then being desperate for relevance and so on. It definitely feels like most of her praise is given retroactively (although they were mostly kind towards her residency).

Christina has had some great albums from her Debut to her latest album Liberation. Stripped and Back To Basics are excellent pop albums with lots of great songs. Her debut is one of the best debut albums ever from an artist. I feel Lotus is underrated while Bionic is not her best it still has some good songs on it.Also her Christmas and Spanish albums are also nice.
Telepathy from Christina is great. This is a song that should of been a hit.

It's crazy that metacritic gave Stripped an average rating of 55.. like you have got to be kidding me!! ππ Some of the negativivity surrounding that album was just so unwarranted.

I wish she would at least come out and say "hey, I'm recording my next album" or something like that. Because I'm afraid this will turn into another 6-year Liberation-style wait.

Iβll give her 3 years in between albums (for now). Letβs face it, itβs not like her songs are doing amazing on whatsoever charts they appear on or her last album sold well.

Yeah no matter what she release itβll flop spectacularly however she doesnβt care about the charts or so it seems. Sheβs been hyping up βLoyal Brave Trueβ though. Or it could be Disney is making her put in the work. Last I checked it was top 15 on AC.
Her best option for moderate success would be to release the Spanish album.

Woah. Looks like she moved to a new record label after 22 years with RCA.
www.rocnation.com/music/christina-aguilera/Nevermind, it's just some partnership for touring which apparently has been up there for a while. Happy 18th bday to Stripped, though!

βLoyal Brave Trueβ hits top ten on AC (Mediabase). Itβs her first solo top 10 on a radio format in fourteen years!
Congrats queen!
