The people behind 'Dark Horse' are definitely using some sort of payola, IMO. OH, yes, that's why it's #1 digitally and smashing in streaming without a video. "Payola" is literally the worst word ever.

"Payola" is literally the worst word ever. I think it still exists, but as others have explained, it's not what's happening with Dark Horse.

The people behind 'Dark Horse' are definitely using some sort of payola, IMO. If they're using payola on DH, they've been doing the same for about 10 singles in a row.. Not necessarily. But my theory comes from that fact that this is a new era, who's first single did fantastic, which was expected, due to her massive last era. However, things did not go as well with 'Unconditionally' and so they are making sure 'Dark Horse' turn things around...at all costs.

Yah- clearly the music-buying public likes DH, as well as radio listeners. #1 Digital, #1 Shazam, #2 Spotify. The ears don't lie! All of that can be bought.

"Unconditionally" was only released because it was Katy's favorite song on the album. And of course, she was disappointed when it underperformed so she released "Dark Horse" to please the public who wanted it as the second single all along.

I see what you're saying, but the whole time that "Unconditionally" was doing its painfully slow climb, it was clear from digital sales and streaming that DH was going to blast on radio as soon as it got its release. With the Juicy J feature, this song has even more multi-format potential than she's used to.

#1 Digital, #1 Shazam, #2 Spotify. The ears don't lie! All of that can be bought. iTunes prevents multiple purchases by the same user from being counted more than once. I doubt that Capitol paid off hundreds of thousands of people to each download the single and keep it secret. If Mariah's fans can't get together to make a hit that way, than a record label can't make it happen.

I knew YOU were gonna go there. I happen to like the song. It has nothing to do with me liking it or not. I was simply talking about its radical performance on the charts lately. It was an observation on my part which I'm probably absolutely wrong about. But I felt like discussing it here because the topic of payola was thrown.

but the gap between #1 and #2 is too close. Are you sure about it? Not really...in fact the gap between Timber and CS will probably be larger this week than it was last week.

Yah, the pre-official0-release activity for DH was pretty notable- so when it was pushed, there was no doubt it was going to take off in a big way.

Pitbull & Ke$ha's 'Timber' Remains Atop Hot 100The collaboration rules the chart for a second week. Plus, 'Dark Horse' becomes Katy Perry's milestone 10th No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart and tops On-Demand Songs. Pitbull and Ke$ha spend a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Timber." Meanwhile, Katy Perry jumps into the top five with "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J), which also crowns the Digital Songs and On-Demand Songs charts. It's Wednesday, so time for our weekly look at the numbers behind the Hot 100's top 10. Pitbull's second Hot 100 No. 1 and Ke$ha's third leader remains atop the Hot 100 despite not ruling any of the Hot 100's three main component charts, Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Streaming Songs. (With this week marking the one-year anniversary of the launch of Streaming Songs, it's just the fifth week in which the Hot 100's top song doesn't rank atop one of the three tallies. The last such occurrence: June 15, when Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" spent its fifth and final week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, while Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," "Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" and PSY's "Gangnam Style" crowned Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Streaming Songs, respectively.) Still, the continued multi-platform success of "Timber" keeps the song atop the Hot 100. It falls 1-2 after four weeks in charge of Digital Songs with 227,000 downloads sold (down 25%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It reaches a new peak on Radio Songs (5-3), gaining by 15% to 125 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. On Streaming Songs, the track slips from its No. 2 highpoint to No. 3, although with a 3% gain to 5.4 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. "Timber" concurrently spends a second week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Below "Timber" on the Hot 100, OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" places at No. 2 for a second week. "Stars" holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs for a fifth frame (144 million, up 4%); dips 3-4 on Digital Songs (185,000, down 22%); and bullets at No. 7 on Streaming Songs (4.4 million, up 9%). As previously reported, "Stars" takes over atop the Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs radio airplay chart this week. In terms of overall Hot 100 chart points, "Timber" wins the top spot by an 8% margin over "Stars." Last week, "Timber" won by a similar 9% points difference. Eminem's former four-week No. 1 "Monster," featuring Rihanna, holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100 but continues leading Radio Songs for a sixth week (147 million, up 2%). It stays at No. 5 on Digital Songs (162,000, down 27%) and falls 6-8 on Streaming Songs (4.1 million, down 3%). "Monster" posts an 11th week at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Katy Perry climbs into the Hot 100's top five with "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J (6-4), the third single from her former Billboard 200 No. 1 album "PRISM." "Horse" gallops fueled heavily by its 4-1 coronation on Digital Songs, where it charges by 6% to 243,000. The song is Perry's 10th No. 1 on Digital Songs, the second-best sum after Rihanna's 13. Eminem ranks third with nine Digital Songs toppers, followed by Britney Spears (seven) and Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift (six each). "Horse" likewise ascends to the top of the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart, rising 5-1 (1.9 million, up 25%), a surge which grants the song the Hot 100's top Streaming Gainer nod. The cut is Perry's second leader on the list, following "Roar," which reigned for two weeks in September. On the Streaming Songs chart, "Horse" hikes 10-5 (4.8 million, up 33%). "Horse" additionally races with the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a second week, barreling 18-11 on Radio Songs (70 million, up 36%). Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" holds at No. 5. The ballad bounds 9-4 on Streaming Songs (4.8 million, up 27%) and 13-12 on Radio Songs (70 million, up 14%), while backtracking 2-3 on Digital Songs (218,000, down 10%). Passenger's "Let Her Go" reaches a new Hot 100 peak (7-6) and dethrones Lorde's "Royals" (4-7) on Hot Rock Songs, which the latter song had led for 19 weeks, marking the sales/airplay/streaming-based chart's third-longest command; Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" dominated for 23 weeks, followed by Foo Fighters' "Rope" (20, in 2011, when Hot Rock Songs was solely airplay-based). "Go" bullets at No. 8 on Radio Songs (84 million, up 6%) and returns to its No. 9 peak on Streaming Songs (13-9; 3.9 million, up 8%). On Digital Songs, it remains at No. 6 (146,000, down 21%). The track's climb to No. 1 on Hot Rock Songs marks its latest milestone, as "Go" topped 14 rankings in Billboard's international charts menu in 2012-13. Avicii's No. 4 hit "Wake Me Up!" holds at No. 8 on the Hot 100, while commanding the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a record-extending 19th week. Imagine Dragons' No. 6-peaking "Demons" rebounds 10-9 on the Hot 100 and One Direction's fellow No. 6 hit "Story of My Life" returns to the top 10 (12-10). Rising 15-14 on Radio Songs (69 million, up 22%, powered by its No. 8 rank on Mainstream Top 40/Pop Songs), "Life" has spent all 11 of its Hot 100 chart weeks in the top 15. Just outside the Hot 100's top 10, Lorde's "Team" (14-11) and Bastille's "Pompeii" (18-12) could challenge for top 10 spots next week. Also next week: watch for Shakira's "Can't Remember to Forget You," featuring Rihanna, to enter the Hot 100 following its arrival at radio and retail on Monday (Jan. 13).

I'm super happy because Timber repeated the number 1! What a global mega smash! :) This number 1 is also a nice birthday gift to Pitbull. Happy 33 Mr. Worldwide!

Where's nivekwriter? With so much competition in the top 20 right now, I'd be curious to see what the chart would likely look like using the old formula.

"Payola" is literally the worst word ever. I think it still exists, but as others have explained, it's not what's happening with Dark Horse. This. It can, and I think still might be happening from time to time, but it's a term/concept that gets used much too liberally. Passenger's "Let Her Go" reaches a new Hot 100 peak (7-6) and dethrones Lorde's "Royals" (4-7) on Hot Rock Songs

When people say "old formula" I never know which one is meant! The old, old formula before on-demand streaming was 10:1 for sales and 10,000:1 for airplay (and 500:1 for passive streaming which used to be minimal). So based on that pre April 2012 formula: Timber = 35,200; Counting Stars = 32,900; Monster = 30,900; Dark Horse = 31,300; Say Something = 28,800; Let Her Go = 23,000. Very similar results, with the differential between #1 and #2 about 7%.

Chart WatchWill update it later.Katy Perry lands her 12th top five single on the Hot 100 as "Dark Horse" (featuring Juicy J) jumps from #6 to #4. Perry first cracked the top five in June 2008 with "I Kissed A Girl." At the time, many viewed that tongue-in-cheek pop smash almost as a novelty song, and Perry as a likely flash-in-the-pan. Perry was passed over for a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist, for example. But Perry has followed that smash up with 11 more top five hits. (She has also won over Grammy voters: She has piled up 11 nominations over the years, including bids for Album, Record and Song of the Year. Curiously, though, she has yet to win a Grammy. We'll see if her luck changes on Jan. 26.) Two things stand out when you look over Perry's hit discography. First, she's been solo or in the lead position on every one of her top 10 hits. Unlike many artists, she didn't fatten her tally with featured credits. Second, when she hits, she really hits. Of her 13 top 10 hits, only one ("Waking Up In Vegas") failed to make the top five. (It peaked at #9.) Eleven have made the top three. "Dark Horse" will almost certainly become her 12th song to make the top three. "Dark Horse" jumps to #1 on Digital Songs, displacing "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha. It's Perry's 10 #1 on the digital sales chart, a total topped only by Rihanna, who has had 13. These are also the only two artists to have amassed five or more 4-million sellers in the digital era, though by this measure, they're in the opposite order. Perry has had seven 4-million-sellers (and has been in the lead position on every one). Rihanna has had five (counting two featured credits). "Timber" heads the Hot 100 for the second week. It's Pitbull's first single to spend two or more weeks at #1. "Give Me Everything" (featuring Ne-Yo, AfroJack & Nayer) had one week on top in 2011. "Timber" tops the Hot 100 even though it's not #1 on any the three component charts on which the Hot 100 is based. It's #2 on Digital Songs, #3 on Radio Songs and #3 on Streaming Songs. Billboard's Gary Trust notes that it's the first song to head the Hot 100 without ranking #1 on any of the three component charts since "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton spent its fifth and final week at #1 last June. (Will this, likewise, be the final week at #1 for "Timber"? Stay tuned.) I have more good news for Ke$ha fans: "We R Who We R" tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. It's her second song to reach that level. Her breakthrough smash, "TiK ToK," is up to 6,620,000."The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna holds at #3 for the second week. It's #1 on Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs for the 11th week. It's Rihanna's second song to log 11 or more weeks at #1 on this chart. "Diamonds" was on top for 14 weeks. Rihanna is the first female artist with two songs that have logged 11 or more weeks at #1 in the history of the chart. (Though let's keep it real: If today's chart criteria had been in place in the 1960s, Aretha Franklin would have doubtless would have had many runs at #1 that were as long or longer.) "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera holds at #5 for the third week. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Aguilera's first song as a lead or co-lead artist to top the 2 million mark. (Bear in mind that most of her biggest hits pre-date the the digital era.) Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger," on which she was featured, is up to 6,347,000.Passenger's "Let Her Go" jumps from #7 to #6. It moves up to #1 on Hot Rock Songs, displacing Lorde's "Royals," which had led the chart for 19 weeks. Avicii’s "Wake Me Up!" holds at #8 for the second week. It's #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for a record-extending 19th week. Aloe Blacc, who is featured (sans label credit) on "Wake Me Up!," has a fast-building hit of his own. "The Man" vaults from #55 to #7 on Digital Songs this week. One Direction's "Story Of My Life" rebounds from #12 to #10. This is its sixth week in the top 10. That's the boy band's best showing since its breakthrough hit, "What Makes You Beautiful," logged 13 weeks in the top 10 in 2012. The current hit has much broader appeal than the group's past teen-oriented hits. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha holds at #1 for the second week in its 14th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (227K)…OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" holds at #2 for the second week in its 30th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (185K)… "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna holds at #3 for the second week in its 11th week on the chart. It has been in the top three the entire time. Digital sales rank: #5 (162K)… "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J jumps from #6 to #4 in its 17th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (243K)… "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera holds at #5 for the third week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (218K). The Second Five: Passenger's "Let Her Go" jumps from #7 to #6 in its 24th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (146K)… Lorde’s "Royals" drops from #4 to #7 in its 28th week on the chart. This is its 20th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (106K)… Avicii’s "Wake Me Up!" holds at #8 for the second week in its 29th week on the chart. This is its 21st week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #16 (88K)… Imagine Dragons' "Demons" rebounds from #10 to #9 its 38th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #14 (94K)…One Direction's "Story Of My Life" rebounds from #12 to #10 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (112K). Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" drops from #9, ending a 16-week run in the top 10. Bastille's "Pompeii," which ranked #18 last week, tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. "Pompeii" jumps from #14 to #9 on Digital Songs. It's one of four songs that jump into the top 10 on the digital sales chart this week. The others: Aloe Blacc's "The Man" (which, as noted above, vaults from #55 to #7), Lorde's "Team" (which jumps from #13 to #8) and Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" (which jumps from #12 to #10). Pharrell Williams' "Happy," which entered the Hot 100 last week at #98, returns to #1 on The U.K.'s Official Singles chart, displacing "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha.

Why the person who wrote that article tries to diminish the success of Timber? Give me everything stayed just one on top because Adele and LMFAO's songs tried to block it, but Pitbull didn't let them to do that.
Why he or she doesn't mention that The monster fell to 12 on itunes after spending 4 weeks on the billboard hot 100.
Why he doesn't mention that Timber which is older than 'the monster' is staying in the top 3 showing more longevity and consistency?

Why the person who wrote that article tries to diminish the success of Timber? Give me everything stayed just one on top because Adele and LMFAO's songs tried to block it, but Pitbull didn't let them to do that. Why he or she doesn't mention that The monster fell to 12 on itunes after spending 4 weeks on the billboard hot 100. Why he doesn't mention that Timber which is older than 'the monster' is staying in the top 3 showing more longevity and consistency? SHUT UP! It's #1. Be Happy. Sh!t.
