And now it's time once again for our weekly look back at the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10's of exactly 55, 50, 45, and 40 years ago this week.
The week of Feb 2 - Feb 8, 1959 is a memorable one in music history but not because of anything to do with the current #1 song, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". It is memorable because that is the week that what is widely considered rock & roll's first tragedy occurred. Shortly after midnight on Feb 3rd, 1959, a chartered plane carrying singer/songwriter Buddy Holly, DJ J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, and the up and coming teenage singer, Ritchie Valens, crashed in a corn field shortly after taking off from an airport near Clear Lake, Iowa. All three of them, and the pilot, were instantly killed on impact. As it happens, Ritchie Valens had the #3 song on the Hot 100 at the time, "Donna", but all three of them; and especially Buddy Holly, would be long remembered and immortalized in songs like "American Pie," by Don McLean in 1971.
February 2, 1959 (for week ending February 8, 1959)
TW LW WK 01 01 12 Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - The Platters (3 weeks at #1) 02 12 07 The All American Boy - Bill Parsons 03 03 11 Donna - Ritchie Valens 04 04 11 16 Candles - The Crests 05 05 09 Stagger Lee - Lloyd Price 06 02 09 My Happiness - Connie Francis 07 06 11 Gotta Travel On - Billy Grammer 08 08 11 Lonely Teardrops - Jackie Wilson 09 07 17 A Lover's Question - Clyde McPhatter 10 09 08 Goodbye Baby - Jack Scott
Beatlemania really began to take hold of the Billboard chart the week of Feb 8th, 1964 when the Beatles, already at #1 with "I Want To Hold Your Hand," scored a second top 10 hit when "She Loves You," jumped into the top 10 as well. US teens were starting to try to find any music by the Beatles that they could find, and the old Swan and VeeJay singles were beginning to chart as well. And the amazing thing is, this was only the beginning of the Beatles' chart domination.

Thank you. She's waaaay tooo old for the song. And you're way too old to talk about dick all the time yet you do anyways. I'm not 2M. I will be here regardless of your childish personal attacks on me. The fact is Jennifer Lopez is too old for the f**king song. Stick to intellectual arguments that center around why you think it's cool women pushing 50 are always singing about getting high on drugs and partying. I talk about a diverse array of topics from sex to education to politics to music to technology all the time. The last 5 years of my career output doesn't revolve around singing shallow vapant records and trying to sell them to the public.

VEVO streams: "Drunk In Love" will obviously rise loads THIS tracking week after THAT Grammy performance. I wonder why Poland is mentioned there.

Let's not get too ageist here. Madonna has had five top tens over 40 (including one of her biggest hits, "Music"), one of which was in her 50s.
Being over 40 doesn't mean you should slink away and disappear.

Compare Madonna, Cher and Jennifer Lopez's output when they were 40+ and you'll see a noticeable difference in the maturity of the material. Music doesn't come across as too young for Madonna in her 40s....

Nowadays, that's looking to be more true than it was in the past. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

It does appear that way but I think radio would be open to older artists releasing great songs. The material of the over 40 female these days is severely lacking in quality when compared with their younger counter parts. In most cases it comes off as a blatant attempt to try and sell to young people....and the other records they release sound like Urban AC and HOT AC records. Why can't people just get a quality record from the over 40 female artists? People will buy them now moreso than ever before. Any of those Adele records I could see an over 40 vocalist singing.

It's not about the age of the artists, it's about the age of the audience the format caters to.

Blurred lines, royals and thrift shop smashed in the US first and then went to other parts of the world. But yes there are songs that start off in Europe and others that started in the US

It's a little of both, as it makes sense that top 40 radio's core audience would be more into younger acts. I wonder if the average listener age for top 40 radio used to be a little higher at one point?

I wonder if the average listener age for top 40 radio used to be a little higher at one point? I think people were more willing to listen to older acts during the 90s and even more during the 80s. It used to not even matter about how good looking your were. It was definitely more about the music during the pre-clear channel take over of radio and making radio an extension of MTV....and this era of micro targeting consumers.

The average listener age was definitely higher in the 80s. It started changing around the early-to mid-90s as rap and grunge really took hold of mainstream music. That drove away a lot of their older listeners, and it also led to the formation of the Hot AC and Urban AC formats.

The 80s had baby boomers who were still major entertainment consumers, so artists from the 60s were still viable for hits.

Tina Turner had that one huge album in her 40s, had another successful one thereafter (though not as successful) and then only scored one top 10 thereafter (which came in 1993, from her film bio).
Cher scored hits in her early 40s with Heart of Stone, which did well- but her albums thereafter were not nearly as successful, until Believe. And while that album went quadruple platinum, the title track was the only one U.S. radio really gave attention to.
And now we have Madonna, who was a lot more successful than those two, who's been able to score a top 10 on the Hot 100 with the first singles from her album in her late 40s and 50s. And perhaps there will be a certain level of radio interest, combined with initial sales and streaming, to boost her next fresh single into the top 10. But it will be a challenge.

My theory is if Madonna came up with song like Team NOW, she could still do very well but otherwise she is just too old for pop radio. Period. It's not ageism by radio in my opinion.
Did we listened to songs by 55 year old stars when we were 15? I didn't. Nobody can force teens to listen to old people who have been around when their parents were young.
Exceptions are of course welcome. They always are.
