For some weird reason, someone classified Lorde's "Team" as EDM on Wikipedia.

Does anyone have a prediction for when "Happy" could hit #1 on the Hot 100? At the rate it's gaining on radio and digital sales, it looks to be the next #1 after "Dark Horse." (I'm really hoping it could hold out until the March 15th chart since that's my birthday.) With continued across-the-board increases in all three chart components and especially with *hint hint* a music video coming out for it, Dark Horse seems like it will be #1 for a while (6 or 7 more weeks) so, I hate to break it to you bud, but unfortunately Happy might not ever hit #1 :/ it will probably end up spending 3-5 weeks at #2 starting from the 3/8/2014 issue. It might hit #1 though. It's certainly a possibility. Although it will be tough considering the competition with DH! That's why it isn't always really accurate to refer to a song's popularity based on its peak on the Hot 100. A song could be huge and only reach #4 (*ahem* Wake Me Up) and likewise months later/earlier a song could have reached #1 with potentially less points than that #4-peaking song months earlier/later.

I actually didn't know this. Did single sales (in the US) ever pick up from that in the '90s or just remain low until digital? Single sales started dying in the 80's because the vinyl 45 RPM single was starting to be phased out. After it was gone, cassingles and later CD singles tried to pick up the slack, but neither format really ever matched the sales of the vinyl 45 RPM single. Single sales didn't see a "rebirth" until downloaded digital singles took off in the mid to late 2000's. There was a period between Dec 1984 and Jun 1991 when NO #1 song stayed on top of the Hot 100 for more than 4 weeks. Probably largely due to the low number of singles being sold during that time period. Until 'Rush, Rush' spent 5 weeks at #1.

Let's take a moment to acknowledge the fact that Wake Me Up is #1 for 20 weeks on EDM songs lol...and it will still get a few more weeks as it's way ahead of STN and I don't see any EDM songs blowing up in the near future (probably enough weeks for it to beat Radioactive's record of 23 weeks for the most weeks at #1 on any genre-based chart!) This (well 2013) is the inaurgural year for that chart, correct?

And just for the record, Madonna's "Like A Virgin" was the last song before that one to stay on top of the Hot 100 for over 4 weeks (6 weeks) back in Dec 1984-Jan 1985.

For some weird reason, someone classified Lorde's "Team" as EDM on Wikipedia. Hey soul sister, I'm yours, somebody that I used to know, and many other songs like this are classified as rock. Cruise is classified as pop. (Country + Rap = Pop.... What the heck?) The Fox is not classified as children's music. Harlem shake is classified as music. (Speechless) People buying Kidz Bop. (WHY????)

(WHY????) I agree with the last two However, the first one yes those are alt rock, which is a form of rock. Rock music doesn't necessarily have to be loud in order to be rock music lol. The second one was mostly played on pop radio (the remix, not the original) hence why it was considered a pop crossover The Fox is a song that I know for a fact many adults (including myself) enjoyed (for like a month). It's a funny song that was really catchy but had poor longevity.

Oscars is certainly a good chance for it. Plus, Happy is gaining 5mm a day in audience on 6 formats hmmm it will close the airplay sales gap significantly as we get close to the oscars and oscars night will send sales and streams through the roof.... Making it almost impossible for Katy to remain #1. If I were Katy Id probably not try to compete with the oscars... As no one will watch her video and she wont recover from that. Id wait until a week after or just run up the score now.

How many weeks does Dark horse have left at #1 before Happy takes over? Three or four weeks, maybe? Uneducated guess on my part, but DH is just now hitting its sales peak and still has room to grow on airplay. Happy is gaining so fast that Pharrell will probably pass Katy's airplay in the next two-three weeks, but then the sales and streaming would also have to catch up and that might not happen until after the Oscars air (3/2). I feel as though pharrel might sneak in a week or two but Katy's video will most likely give it a strong boost in its 4th week at #1 and beyond. Already dark horse has blocked drunk in love and another #2 peak song. I wonder how many dark horse will block in its totals run. I just hope happy s one or two weeks at #1 wont stop katy from a 10week achievement.

I'm still amazed at how Happy is behaving like a brand new song from a mega pop star, despite having been available since last summer and considering pharell, while successful! has never had this kind of immediate reception. Good for him. And I'm surprised it took so long for the song to be noticed.

"Get Lucky didn't have enough points to be in the top 50, with ranks of No. 15 Digital Songs and 18 Streaming? Oy. It was No. 1 on Recurrents last week- and with this week's gains... I'm on the case.

That fits my theory that songs can not bounce in and out during the same chart run

Wouldn't it be something if Radioactive outlives Demons?

He will probably come back with something from the email that he is sending them. I am thinking there might be a reason why we haven't seen songs drop off to recurrent then bounce back in so quickly before now.

Actually it did have enough points. It's #2 on EDM songs behind WMU (#19 on the Hot 100) and STN is #3 on EDM songs (#30 on the Hot 100) therefore Get Lucky clearly would've been #20-#30 if it hadn't been recurrent.

Yep, as Gary posted, it's "recent recurrents" that don't get treated in the same manner as older tracks. Not sure of the time frame, though. Only if they have enough points to have a major ranking (I'm guessing top 10?) would it be allowed to re-enter.

Only if they have enough points to have a major ranking (I'm guessing top 10?) would it be allowed to re-enter. that was what happened with Cruise. I think if Get Lucky were allowed to return this week, it would be out next week or 3/1/2014 for sure. No point for them to let it re-enter for 1 or 2 weeks.

Older tracks have re-entered for a single week and dropped back off. But, I hear what you're saying.

Running your original 20 weeks to recurrent status puts you in one category. Getting 5 weeks falling off and getting 2 more later might put you in another.

You think she'll sit on the video for another month? I would think if she holds on to the video for that long it might actually have no effect b/c the anticipation will be mostly gone. It really comes down to whether Happy will be more of a dark horse itself (multi-week sales monster which keeps it lodged at #1 for a while) or a Get Lucky (consistent but not enough to beat out the monster in front of it). When Katy releases the video isn't going to make a difference in how DH affects that.

Perhaps, it's tied to a "new peak" - so if a recent recurrent peaked at, say, 35, but it surged back and had enough point to hit 27, Billboard might let it re-enter. Otherwise, if a recent recurrent is below Top 20 and already achieved a higher peak, it not that big of a deal. However, anything that would qualify as Top 20 should be let it.

If Katy Perry will be naked in the music video for Dark Horse I assure you the video will be the most watched for a long time and it will certainly boost DH's # of weeks at number 1. If Miley could do it, then, considering that Katy Perry is generally considered MUCH more attractive than Miley, Katy can do it too. I wouldn't count on that happening though lol

There is clearly a time factor involved with the whole re-entering thing. Not clear though what that is.
In the above example, a song peaks at #35 then drops out. If it gains popularity to crack the top 50 point=wise at #49, say next year, then it would be charting regardless of where it peaked before
