The awkward moment when you realize two things about the 2/15/2014 Billboard Hot 100:
1. Talk Dirty is now Jason Derulo's second-highest-peaking song 2. All of the top four songs have a rapper on them

To flip it, would Dance Stations push a song by a newcomer advocating traditional marriage into their top 5? I personally don't believe they would. Wait, what? It's not like any of the top songs on dance radio airplay have any inclinations to gay sex. Zedd's "Stay The Night" was about a one night stand. Yeah, but dance-pop music like the stuff Zedd does has a HUGE gay following (that's why Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, etc. spent their whole careers doing that kind of music lol). It's not like songs need to be about gay sex, but I don't think an actual homophobic (or pro-traditional marriage) song would fare too well. It alienates most of the people that are fans of dance-pop in the first place. And it's not like one night stands are exclusive to straight people (far from it I imagine!).

Trap, drum & bass, crunk, grime, dubstep, etc. are definitely popular with straight guys, but not the kind of stuff Zedd does. It's true that most DJs are straight males, but I don't think that really means anything. Like most of One Direction's music is made by straight males, but their fanbase consists mainly of females. And most of Katy Perry's music is made by Dr. Luke, etc, but most of her core fans seem to be females or gay males.

I meant the hard house music you would hear in festivals like Creamfields, Ibiza, Ultra Music Festival, etc.... I've heard of Ibiza, but I've never heard of the other two. I'm straight, and I do like house music, but the minimal stuff like Storm Queen, Chris Malinchak, Klangkarussell, Gorgon City, Duke Dumont, Julio Bashmore, Disclosure is what's most popular with my demographic atm. Songs like Zedd - Clarity, Lady Gaga - Applause, Krewella - Alive, Britney Spears - Work Bitch, Katy Perry - Walking on Air, LDR - Summertime Sadness, are pretty much the most emasculating type of music out there. If any of my friends caught me listening to one of these songs, I'd be ridiculed about it for months lol.

I don't see how any of this relates to why radio is not playing Kacey Musgraves. In the article the radio program directors immediately said even though they like the song (so it's appealing to men & women) but wouldn't play it if it was a single. So they're the ones who decided what their audience would and wouldn't accept before even putting it out there. That has nothing to do with acceptance of EDM music. That's to do with how radio is all about taking the safe road which is why a lot of people get turned off by it.
I think if the song she released second had been a huge hit, then maybe more radio would have taken up Follow Your Arrow. That's how it played out for Macklemore. Once he had huge hits in Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us, he was able to get radio to play Same Love. If he had released Same Love first I doubt that radio would have played it as much. I think they would have been nervous at this kind of spoken word song that called out certain groups of people clearly.

Kasey still has the opportunity for CHR/Pop to jump on the song, which is hopefully what happens in this situation. It has lyrical choices that would appeal to that audience more.

But have you listened to any of the artists I mentioned? It's a very different style of music as well. Listen to: Ben Pearce - What I Might Do Klangkarussell - Sonnentanz Gorgon City - Real (which has female vocals) Disclosure - When a Fire Starts to Burn Chris Malinchak - So Good to Me It's quite a different kind of music. You'd never see Lady Gaga or Zedd releasing music like that. It's too laid-back, minimal and chilled for them lol.

When was the last time CHR played a country song from a new country artist that wasn't a hit on country radio?

When was the last time CHR played a country song from a new country artist that wasn't a hit on country radio? For that matter, when was the last time CHR played a country song, period? Even the country hits do not cross over. That said I think it might be a bit off the mark to suggest Kacey could go to CHR; Hot AC and possibly AC are where I see her having the most potential. IIRC Hunter Hayes went top 15 at both formats and that seemed to be without a concerted effort from his label to 'push' the song there. In general I think there is a market for this niche that Kacey has; she is country but her melodies are very digestible by pop standards, and if the lyrics have a 'liberal' slant pop/hot AC are more amenable to them. I have suggested pretty much the same for Kelly's country releases - rather than trying to shoot for country radio I think RCA should just release her country music to pop and Hot AC, b/c that's where the sales potential is for her (and not just b/c she's known as a pop artist). Aiming to reach mainstream listeners through a country crossover movement (if not on pop on HAC) would probably be easier in the long run than trying to force country radio to accommodate a sound or lyrical POV that the PDs are convinced its listeners aren't interested in or ready for.

We quote "Work Bitch" and "Applause" often and we all know the other songs as well. All my friends are straight.

I'm straight and I listen to Zedd and Gaga and so do just about everyone at my school, so it's pretty clear to say both gay and straights enjoy the EDM music!!! tbh

I like music because of how it sounds not because I'm straight... This. This is what music is supposed to be about, not gender, sexual orientation, geographic location. It's because you enjoy it! You just spend every moment absorbing every sound wave coming forth from your speaker because it takes over you; music is a very passionate art form! You release music, not for success, but to share the world your deepest feelings through music. This is what music is about, it's an amazing, sometimes chaotic thing, but the main point is the purpose of listening to music is to enjoy and bask in the meaning of the melody, the lyrics, and the background instrumentals.
