Theboot.com had this on their page today, thought it would be fun to name some songs y'all couldn't stand, but were huge hits. Usually, songs I dislike , I dislike them from the get-go. Then, country radio proceeds to play the crap out of it for 3-4 months and drives me nuts. (Whereas songs I sometimes like grow on me over time , which is weird). Below are some songs I couldnt stand from recent memory
-Tim McGraw : Looking for that girl (how in the **** is this still climbing the charts???) -Tim McGraw : Last Dollar and Southern Girl. Both of these were overly annoying to me, in melody, production, lyrics etc -Pretty much any single Sugarland has put out BESIDES Stay (amazing song) and Already Gone. (Fun side note, I remember me and my wife going to CMA Fest back in 2008 or 2009, and we boarded the downtown bus and Sugarlands "All I want to do" was on the radio. The ENTIRE bus started doing the "whooo whoo whoo hooo". I wanted to jump out the window, so annoying. My wife was laughing because she knew how bad that song irritated me).
- Toby Keith : Wanna Talk About Me.... hated it then, hate it now. LOL. -Remember Phil Stacey?....yea - Luke Bryan: Crash My Party...I originally liked his performance on the ACM's, then heard studio version, and zzzzzz - Billy Currington: Hey Girl..huge Billy fan here, but this song was such a dud, and weirdly produced. Never liked it from first listen, he is better as a traditionalist. - Blake Shelton : Over and God Gave Me You...huge hits on radio, but SOO bland. And my local stations played these every 10 minutes it seems. - Eric Paslay: Friday Night...i think this was because it really was on airwaves for so long. The album was better than this song - Current FGL song. Horrible - Current Chase Rice song. Even Worse. (If someone else puts out a song with the word "Roll" in the title, it should be edited out. We get it guys, we know how you roll. Now turn your hat forward and sing another song HAHA) - Dan + Shay : 19 you and me. I respect these guys because they wrote most of their songs, and i respect that. But just too soft and poppy for me. - Jake Owen : 8 Second Ride. Really bad song, confused me how this made it on 2 albums - Jerrod Niemann : Drink To That All Night. Another guy I respect alot, but his new album makes it appear he's gone off the rails. This song was so bad from the first 30 seconds I heard of it. Turn the station every time.
Thats all i can think of for now, but plenty more I am sure. How else agrees with any of my choices?

"That's My Kind of Night" is one of the few I agree with. The lyrics are horrible. And yet when FlaGa does nearly the same thing on "This Is How We Roll", I don't bat an eye.
I also absolutely hated "Who I Am" by Jessica Andrews. The concept of the song is okay, but the lyrics are so painfully generic you-go-girl motivation, and there's no color at all to Jessica's voice on it. It's one of the most generic, prefab pieces of country I've ever heard. And this is what kept "It's a Great Day to Be Alive" from going to #1.
Come to think of it, those are mostly the same complaints I have on "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack. Never saw that song's appeal in the slightest.

Well, I wasn't going to post in this thread because I feel many will say the same dozen songs over and over. So rather than listing the "Drink To That All Night" and "This Is How We Roll's of the world, I listed the ones that I can't stand that were hits. I only put songs that went at least top 10. Again, many of these I expect to be alone or at least close to alone on, but here we go.
"Who's Your Daddy" - Toby Keith (First off, the title alone is horrid. Not to mention the chorus lyrics are cringe worthy. "I got the money, if you got the honey, let's cut a deal, let's make a plan. Who's your daddy, who's your baby. Who's your buddy, who's your man". The only song two songs he's recorded that might be worse are "She's A Hottie", and "Shut Up And Hold On", but neither went top 10)
"Why Ya Wanna" - Jana Kramer (I admit this one is on me. I can't stand Jana's singing voice. She's extremely sweet and down to earth, but her vocals don't work for me at all. This song just made it worse I thought with the "why ya gotta, why ya wanna's". My goal in 2012 was to turn the dial before the vocals kicked in)
"Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" - Kenny Chesney (Kenny's had some subpar songs but for some reason the hook bothered me)
"The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA" - Donna Fargo (This song actually makes me laugh. I can not believe how childish it sounds. It went to #1 too! Wasn't alive in the 70's so I can't speak for why it was so popular)
"God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You" - Alabama f/N'Sync (Alabama singing a song with N'Sync. Need I say more)
"Hey Girl" - Billy Currington (One of the one's that will be on other lists, but The rhyming of girl with girl was quite weak, and the melody wasn't that strong I thought)
"I'll Go On Loving You" - Alan Jackson (I love AJ. But this song haunted my memory when I was a little kid. Maybe it was the fact the verses were about sex and Alan was talking the lyrics)
"Making Memories Of Us" - Keith Urban (Way overrated to me. It really wasn't a bad song, but in 2005 it was everywhere. It spent multiple weeks at #1, and the song was just unmemorable I thought. Again, overplayed plays a crucial part in this)
"I Melt" - Rascal Flatts (This to me is bad Rascal Flatts. Sometimes they have songs were Gary's vocals get on my nerve. The song was extremely blaze to boot. "Bob That Head" didn't go top 10, so that's why that's not here. By the way, go read that thread sometime. If you're having a bad day and need some comic relief, it's a must read)
"Why Haven't I Heard From You" - Reba McEntire (This song is just annoying. The only time I heard more annoying background singers were in Steve Holy's "Men Buy The Drinks (Girls Call The Shots)")
"I Love You" - Martina McBride (This song is the essence of "Fluff". I love Martina's music for the most part, but man. I thought this was a pop song turned country when I was a kid)

"God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You" - Alabama f/N'Sync (Alabama singing a song with N'Sync. Need I say more) Just curious, would you have liked this song with only Alabama singing it? I actually like the song quite a bit with Randy singing it, I've always loved his voice. Also I know, NSYNC does mostly harmony on that song, but if you could have a version with just Alabama on it.

Very popular. Also a #11 pop and #7 adult contemporary hit as well. I am surprised you did not mention Donna Fargo's follow up, Funny Face.

I was only in elementary school when it came out, so anything with N'Sync in it just turned me off and my station played the heck out of it. To be quite honest, I never liked the actual song to begin with either. Many factors makes me dislike it. Just a personal preference. I do love Alabama, don't get me wrong, but that one is head and shoulders my least favorite by them. Wasn't the biggest fan of "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)" either. Now I'm sure there will be problems. ;) Never heard it onebuffalo. But I'll take a listen right now to see... Edit: Just heard it. Bad song idea with "Funny face" referring to her love interest, but not as bad to me as "The Happiest Girl In The USA".

You can say that again. That was Alabama's first truckin' song after having a ton of songs about the south and/or love. I love the storyline of Roll On Eighteen Wheeler.

The only song two songs he's recorded that might be worse are "She's A Hottie", and "Shut Up And Hold On", but neither went top 10) There are many songs from 1998-2002 that I hated when they were out, but now like. I think this is the only one that ended up going the other way for me: I used to like it, but I now think it's one of TK's worst. It's clearly tongue in cheek. Oh good, someone else thinks that song's terrible. I've actually heard a version that has 'N Sync's vocals removed. I think the song is somewhat banal, but I think the combination of voices makes for some really sweet harmony. Really, it's just pretty good ear candy for me. This one used to do the same thing to me, but I think it was because I was incredibly sheltered at 12 and was all "ew, sex!" But I think it's really passionate and dark, something that AJ didn't really try again until "Like Red on a Rose". I hate her childish delivery on this one. And if your hook is "I Love You", then you should just give up right now because you're clearly not even trying. ==== Another one that bothers me but I can't really pinpoint: "Let's Fall to Pieces Together" by George Strait. I just think the line about "you left your tears on the jukebox" is one of the most contrived things I've ever heard.

In respect to "I Love You" Martina did get a 5 week #1 run with it so even if she wasn't trying, she really didn't have to. Personally I like the song, but understand where you're coming from. In regards to "Why Haven't I Heard From You", again I respect your position, but for me it is so much fun to sing along to. I'll have to give this thread some more thought and time to put together a list.

My stations played the non-NSync versions of God Must Have Spent, which at the time really annoyed me because I might have been slightly obsessed with them...

To be honest I stopped following the charts closely in 2009, so I imagine there were a ton of big hits in the past five years that would qualify if I had heard them. I have heard some though, and they've managed to sneak on to my list. Before that, there were some big hits I found merely mediocre, and some I began to resent due to vast overplay, but very little that I saw as inherently awful. Maybe I'm just easy to please. Let me think of a few though...
Toby Keith - Who's Your Daddy (totally agree with whoever said this one. Instant channel changer for me, which is odd, because the late '90s/early '00s were a great time for Keith)
Trace Adkins - Swing (most of his other "goofy" songs like "Hot Mama" and "Ladies Love Country Boys" I find more subpar than terrible, hate this one though. He has the vocal talent to be a legend if he consistently recorded and released songs like "Til the Last Shot's Fired," "The Night He Can't Remember," "Sometimes a Man Takes a Drink" etc.)
Carrie Underwood - Undo It, Cowboy Casanova, Good Girl (be gentle Carrie fans... I like songs like "Wasted" and "Two Black Cadillacs" just fine)
Tim McGraw - Watch the Wind Blow By (I remember thinking this one was incredibly boring. Haven't heard it in years, so maybe my opinion's changed)
Alan Jackson - Country Boy (seriously? what's worse is that he already recorded a song called "All American Country Boy", which, while not great, was basically the same thing and vastly better)
Alabama - God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You (boring and too poppy for my tastes. I feel the same way about much of Alabama's '90s work, to be honest)
Brooks & Dunn - Hillbilly Deluxe, Play Something Country, Put a Girl in It (much prefer their weightier material)
I'm sure I'll think of more.
Confession: I like "I'll Go On Loving You" and "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy."

Confession: I like "I'll Go On Loving You" and "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy." -Agree on "Swing". What's amazing to me is that he topped how bad that song was twice! Next year he came out with "I Got My Game On", and then in 2011 with "Brown Chicken Brown Cow". Luckily both flopped. He was very frustrating because he released some great classics, and I feel his career wasn't as successful as it should have been with going back to the funny song Well one too many times. -I actually liked "Cowboy Casanova" but understand why many didn't go for that one. We all have preferences. -Now that I think of it, I just should have said "Too poppy and too boring" for why I didn't like "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You". Would have been much easier. -I liked everything on Horse Of A Different Color, even "Save A Horse". The only problem I have now is just overplay. I also don't think overplaying that particular song is such a great idea either.

Couldn't agree more with your final sentence. -I liked everything on Horse Of A Different Color, even "Save A Horse". The only problem I have now is just overplay. I also don't think overplaying that particular song is such a great idea either. Horse of a Different Color was indeed a great album, and was one of my favorite mainstream albums of the '00s. 2004 in particular was a strong year with Live Like You Were Dying, Twice the Speed of Life, Revelation, What I Do, Trent Willmon, Be Here, & Blake Shelton's Barn & Grill all coming out that year. As for "Horse", shame radio hyperfocuses on it when it comes to that era. Do they even play "Holy Water", "Wild West Show" and "Big Time" anymore? I am waiting for a Songs You Loved, But Were Not Huge Hits thread. We already had that a few weeks ago. pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/138294/favorite-songs-never-charted-high

Alan Jackson - Country Boy (seriously? what's worse is that he already recorded a song called "All American Country Boy", which, while not great, was basically the same thing and vastly better) I agree. "Country Boy" was just awful. All of the rhymes in it are terribly forced or not even close ("help you"/"take you", "asphalt"/"red dirt") that "I'm not a stalker" line is creepy as all get out, the melody is monotonous, and the song's dragged out way too long (why stop at having only one bridge in your song when you can have two?!). All in all, it gives off a "creepy old man" vibe when you have this 50 year old offering blatant single entendres like "Climb in my bed, I'll take you for a ride". Also, he can't make up his mind on the words in the chorus — is it down winding roads or country roads? Will he take her where she wants to go, or needs to go? Hands down, AJ's worst, and it went to #1. I haven't heard "Watch the Wind Blow By" in over 10 years. I remember hating it, but again, my opinion tends to change in 10 years.

Got a few more:
Carrie Underwood- "Good Girl" (Irritating as all get out, from the guitars, to the delivery, it just annoys me to no end)
Lady Antebellum- "Wanted You More" (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)
Kenny Chesney- "Pirate Flag" (Country-rap at it's absolute lamest. Doesn't even sound like he cares. Everything else is blah as well)
Rascal Flatts- "Banjo" (Thought it was OK at first. After the 100000th listen I have really grown a strong hatred for this.)
David Nail- "Let It Rain" (Comes across to me as whiny.)

Pretty much every Shania Twain song except "Nobody Needs to Know" and "You're Still the One". I actually blame most of where country is today on some of the stuff she released from Come on Over and Up! (I know it's not her fault, but I feel the same about most of the songs now that I felt back in the late 90s / early 00s)
Also, hate for Alan's I'll Go on Loving You? Man, I remember hearing that on the radio for the first time and not knowing whether I loved it or hated it. Three days later it was one of my all-time favorite Alan songs. The music is superb.
I've never been a fan of Wynonna either. I know a bunch of people that love nearly everything by her, but I've yet to hear a song I've enjoyed by her.

I absolutely cannot stand pretty much any up-tempo songs from Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, or Rascal Flatts, yet those three have had very consistent success with these types of songs unfortunately. Some of the worst that come to mind are "Undo It," "Cowboy Casanova," "Last Name," "Before He Cheats," "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy," "When the Sun Goes Down," "Summertime," "Beer in Mexico," "Out Last Night," "Fast Cars and Freedom," "Summer Nights," "Banjo," and "Life is a Highway" (which wasn't a single, but went top 20 on unsolicited airplay, which is just crazy). Ironically, all three of these acts have some really great ballads, but their ballads get way less recurrent airplay than their up-tempo songs, which are almost never tolerable imo.
It's pretty interesting that, for me, the only FGL and Luke Bryan recent singles I didn't like were "Stay" and "Drink a Beer," which were probably the two that most folks on this board found more bearable. Lol.

Hands down, AJ's worst, and it went to #1. I probably haven't heard the song in close to five years so I can't remember exactly how it goes or what the lyrics were, but I remember not believing that Alan Jackson of all people could release such an uninspired, generic mess. The phrase "phoning it in" springs to mind. From Good Time, I wish either "Long Long Way" or "Never Loved Before" were released as singles instead.

Lol. Totally agree on some of the songs you brought up like "Summertime", "She Think's My Tractor's Sexy", "When The Sun Goes Down", "Summer Nights", and "Life Is A Highway". The latter was from the large success of Cars. I remember being dragged to that thing by my second oldest nephew in 2006. I did actually like the movie, and most of the Pixar classics to be honest (Wall-E was my fave ;)). "Fast Cars And Freedom" took me a long time to not dislike due to the overplay, but recently I found my dislike was just hearing it too often. I think it's one of there better ones now. I also think "Beer In Mexico" was overrated but I'm probably alone on that. BTW: "Stay" is actually my least favorite by FGL ;). The opening two lines were flat out unrealistic and awful. Plus it wasn't even remotely country to me.

I don't exactly hate the Rascal Flatts version, but "Life is a Highway" is a Chris LeDoux song as far as I'm concerned.

Rascal Flatts annoys me to no end with Summer Nights. It sounds all cheap and generic and "forced fun" in a Disney Channel sitcom way. I'd swear the song was written for From Justin to Kelly.

Blake Shelton: "Boys 'Round Here", because...well..have you heard it? (I also hated his string of over sappy songs. If a different artist did 1 it might be okay, but all of these back-to-back *yawn* Chris Young "Aw Naw" & Billy Currington "Hey Girl", because we all know they can do waaaay better. Great voices can't save those lyrics Cole Swindell "Chillin' It" + all the crud frat boy stuff he wrote for Luke (Luke is better than this crud) Thomas Rhett "Beer with Jesus", "It goes like this" and ESPECIALLY "Get me some of that"!!! Keith Urban "Little Bit of Everything" ... I also hate "Cop Car"
