Is The Sound Of Summer At Alternative, Triple-A ... Now? - Billboard.com - by Sean Ross, noted Radio Trends analyst
After Five Years of Pop, Could Summer 2014 Rock?
Is the sound of summer 2014 playing on an alternative or triple-A station now?
For the last five years, the song of summer has been either pure pop, rhythmic pop, or in that "turbo-pop" area in between: "I Gotta Feeling," "California Gurls," "Party Rock Anthem," "Call Me Maybe," "Blurred Lines."
The last time a rock song came close to being the summer song was 2008, when Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" battled with "I Kissed A Girl." I scored it at the time for Katy Perry, but either call would have been right. (For those with long, unforgiving memories, I also gave 2009 to the Black Eyed Peas for "Boom Boom Pow," not "I Gotta Feeling"; however, that changes nothing here.)
So it's interesting that alternative and triple-A radio have at least a half-dozen "rock" records, as loosely defined these days, that are poppy, uptempo, and would sound great on top 40 radio this summer.
The poppier sound of alternative is well-documented and has been more than a decade in the offing. But triple-A's changes have contributed as well. As triple-A moves closer to both alternative and modern AC, the singer-songwriters based at that format have changed their offerings. Serena Ryder's "Stompa," a massive triple-A hit, was Adele influenced and explains why artists like Ray Lamontagne and Ingrid Michaelson don't sound nearly as pensive this time out.
"Stompa" would have sounded great at mainstream top 40 (as it did in Ryder's native Canada, but got no further than midchart at adult top 40. Undoubtedly, some of the songs cited here will get nowhere near top 40 either. And given the tortuous road for any alternative crossover, some may not get to top 40 until Labor Day. Bastille's "Pompeii" recently peaked at top 40, completing a nearly five month journey from alternative.
Among the songs that would sound great at top 40:
Kongos, "Come With Me Now" -- Alternative PDs are capable of taking months to incubate a record, but made this one happen almost immediately on its U.S. release. Top 40 PDs rarely play anything before being asked, but three already have it in significant rotation, including KHKS (Kiss 106.1) Dallas, often the pop/rock incubator among Clear Channel's major-market mainstream top 40s. And whatever the actual intent of the lyrics, it does have the same "like there's no tomorrow" call-to-action that has become part of the summer song DNA.
Fitz & the Tantrums, "The Walker" -- It's up. It's fun and bouncy. It has whistling. It's top five alternative, top 10 triple-A and top 15 at adult top 40. It already has a number of spins at mainstream top 40, mostly small-market, but including KBKS (Kiss 106.1) Seattle. And it feels like one of those songs that could spring into action with warmer weather.
Black Keys, "Fever" -- They've gotten this far without a pop hit. It's not inconceivable that the audience that loved "Little Black Submarine" might feel betrayed. But when a band with an existing following finally distills what it does into something poppier, the results are often huge. And it's already No. 6 at alternative in less than a week.
Ray Lamontagne, "Supernova" -- The only thing more startling than a poppy Black Keys song is a bouncy, uptempo Ray Lamontagne song, and the Keys' Dan Auerbach was part of this one as well. Like Ryder, just reinventing himself at triple-A is a significant statement for Lamontagne. So far, the airplay hasn't even spread to adult top 40, and top 40 seems an unlikely home. But the video is just out, and wait until the syncs start.
Bleachers, "I Wanna Get Better" -- Jack Antonoff's side project fits better as a summer song musically than lyrically. But the Fun. guitarist has pulled off heavy and anthemic together before.
Cage The Elephant, "Take It Or Leave It" -- It's only starting to scale the alternative charts now. And the previous single "Come A Little Closer," another long-running alternative hit, is still making its way at adult top 40. Also, not such a breezy lyric. But after five years of quietly supplying alternative with consistent hits, the pop hit intent is clearer than ever here.
This is by no means a definitive list. Foster The People, whose mix of poppy music/darker lyrics looms over a lot of what's on the alternative charts now, has one single peaking and another rising at alternative, but hasn't gone to pop with either. Bastille's follow-up, "Bad Blood," is also heavy lyrically, but that didn't stop "Pompeii," and the new one has reggae elements -- always welcome in summer. Coldplay's "Magic" will now be viewed through the filter of Chris Martin's separation from Gwyneth Paltrow, but certainly seemed engineered for pop nevertheless.
At top 40, the more traditional candidates for "Song of Summer 2014" are already starting to line up. Pitbull will be in play with "Wild Wild Love." WWCK (CK105) Flint, Mich., PD Jerry Noble, who called both "All Summer Long" and "Blurred Lines" early, has given an early endorsement to Katy Perry's "Birthday," which gets a boost from a handful of influential stations this week. But if any of these individually seem to be unlikely candidates for the summer song, in the aggregate they suggest that there could be a more pop/rock feel at top 40 in a few months.

are DJ Earworm's mashups not eligible for the Hot 100 or are they just not popular enough to be on it? They've just never had the points. I'm pretty sure they'd be eligible.

I don't think rock will be back this summer but 2015. What we haven't had yet, is a big mainstream dance #1 and Rather Be could do that trick. It's been huge everywhere it's been released despite the fact that both the band and Jess Glynne are practically unknown.
That said, Black Keys WILL get their biggest hit to date.

If its updates don't come to an abrupt end causing it to start crashing suddenly the way Happy did, All of Me might actually be able to get to #1 on radio! It's still by far the biggest gainer with 4M (even almost 5M) updates!

Yes but #2 is still pretty damn close if you ask me xD especially considering that the song didn't even get into the top 2 on the weekly chart

At this point last year Blurred Lines had just come out, and two other massive summer hits (Get Lucky & We Can't Stop) hadn't even come out yet. It's way too early to tell.

2 days in a row of 1M+ updates for Partition and Ain't It Fun is impressive! Glad to see Happy getting good updates again...hopefully it doesn't crash before Tuesday then maybe it still has a chance to beat BL's record as well as get 300M AI on Mediabase...they really should release it to alternative radio!!! (If it's on triple a and if Daft Punk was eligible) & lol @ Wake Me Up staying put in the top 20 and refusing to go...maybe it end up spending a full year in the top 20 xD jk

I agree, I think it's very likely this song will dominate the summer. It's similar to Fireflies by Owl City, and look how big that was!

The CHR law of diminishing returns suggests that Katy - unless she changes it up more (a la Dark Horse) - can only keep going for so long with multiple #1s.

Birthday is definently going o be a top 2 hit on the hot 100...and probably will reach number 1. Walking in air and Leggendary lovers are also very different

Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' Holds Atop Hot 100; DJ Snake & Lil Jon Hit Top 10Williams' 'Happy' rules for a sixth week, while DJ Snake and Lil Jon's 'Turn Down for What' charges into the top 10 Pharrell Williams' "Happy" crowns the Billboard Hot 100 for a sixth week, while continuing to challenge for a weekly radio audience record. Plus, DJ Snake and Lil Jon's EDM track "Turn Down for What" soars into the top 10.It's Wednesday, so let's delve deeper into the numbers behind the top 10, as we do each week. As "Happy" maintains its Hot 100 rule, it leads the Radio Songs chart for a fifth week with a 3 percent gain to 226 million all-format audience impressions (up from 219 million), according to Nielsen BDS. In the Radio Songs chart's 23-year history, it moves closer to the biggest weekly audience. Here's a look at the five top totals, with Williams figuring into the top two: Peak Audience, Title, Artist (Chart Week)228.9 million, "Blurred Lines," Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell (Aug. 31, 2013) 225.9 million, "Happy," Pharrell Williams (April 12, 2014) 212.2 million, "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (July 9, 2005) 196.3 million, "Irreplaceable," Beyonce (Jan. 20, 2007) 192.5 million, "No One," Alicia Keys (Dec. 22, 2007) Powering its Radio Songs reign, "Happy" leads the Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Adult R&B Songs airplay charts, while ranking in the top 10 on Rhythmic Songs (which it topped two weeks ago), Adult Contemporary and the top 20 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Adult Alternative Songs and Latin Airplay. "Happy" leads the Digital Songs chart for a seventh week, although down by 13 percent to 321,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Having sold at least 300,000 in each of the last seven weeks, it's the first song to link such a streak since Thicke's "Blurred Lines" (again, featuring Williams) did so for a record 10 consecutive weeks last year. Only two other titles have run up streaks of at least seven weeks selling 300,000 or more in each frame: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz (eight weeks, 2013), and fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae (seven, 2012).On Streaming Songs, "Happy" holds at No. 10 with 3.3 million U.S. streams (down 6 percent), according to BDS. It stays at No. 2 on the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart, which it led for two weeks (2.3 million U.S. streams, down 12 percent, according to BDS). Another stat that should make Williams (even more) happy: he passes Elvis Presley among male artists with the most weeks at No. 1 in the Hot 100's 55-year history. Williams has now tallied 23 total weeks among his four No. 1s, passing Presley (22 weeks) and tying 50 Cent and Nelly for 10th place among men with the most frames at the summit. Usher leads all solo males with 47 weeks at No. 1 (the fifth-best sum all-time, after Mariah Carey's 79, the Beatles' 59, Rihanna's 51 and Boyz II Men's 50). (Also notably, Presley's career predates the Hot 100, which launched in August 1958, so his total would surely be higher had the chart existed when he enjoyed such smashes as 1956's "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Don't Be Cruel" and 1957's "All Shook Up" and "Jailhouse Rock," among other classics.)"Happy" concurrently spends an eighth week at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. John Legend's first Hot 100 top 10, "All of Me," posts a second week at No. 2. The piano ballad rises 3-2 on Radio Songs (164 million, up 14 percent), claiming the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer honor for a second straight week. It logs a fourth week at its No. 2 peak on Digital Songs, up by 1 percent to 226,000. On Streaming Songs, it lifts 4-3 (7.2 million, up 3 percent). Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, holds at No. 3 on the Hot 100. It led for four weeks before "Happy" began its command. The cut leads Streaming Songs for a sixth week and becomes just the second song to rule On-Demand Songs for at least 10 weeks; Macklemore & Lewis' "Thrift Shop" racked a record 13 weeks at No. 1 on On-Demand Songs last year.As reported this morning, Perry will team with Kacey Musgraves for the June 13 episode of "CMT Crossroads," which pairs pop and country acts. "From the moment I heard 'Merry Go Round' by Kacey Musgraves [which won this year's Grammy Award for best country song], I knew we were cut from the same songwriter's cloth," Perry tells Billboard. (And, while Capitol Records has yet to officially release a follow-up single to "Dark Horse," the third single from Perry's album "PRISM," the set's "Birthday" is approaching the Pop Songs radio airplay chart, with an average of 20 plays on the 10 reporting stations playing it.)Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, ranks at No. 4 on the Hot 100 for a third week. It peaked at No. 3 for four weeks. As the soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" logs an eighth week atop the Billboard 200, the album's "Let It Go" by Idina Menzel keeps at its No. 5 Hot 100 peak to date. The best original song Oscar-winner holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (7.7 million, up 5 percent) and pushes 4-3 on Digital Songs, although down by 2 percent to 164,000. Sales account for 50 percent of the song's Hot 100 points; streaming, 46 percent; and, radio, just 4 percent, although the ballad rises 15-13 on Adult Contemporary and 32-31 on Adult Pop Songs. The word "frozen" also describes the Hot 100's entire top seven, where those titles remain in place from last week. Bastille's "Pompeii" repeats at No. 6 (and tops Hot Rock Songs for a seventh week) and Lorde's "Team" is a non-mover at No. 7. The songs have peaked at Nos. 5 and 6 on the Hot 100, respectively. Aloe Blacc's "The Man" reaches a new best rank on the Hot 100 (9-8), swapping spots with OneRepublic's No. 2 hit "Counting Stars" (8-9).DJ Snake and Lil Jon boast the Hot 100's lone top 10 new entry, as "Turn Down for What" jumps 15-10. The EDM track makes across-the-board-gains, climbing 9-7 on Digital Songs (96,000, up 9 percent), backtracking 7-8 on Streaming Songs but surging by 11 percent to 3.7 million and debuting on Radio Songs at No. 50 (27 million, up 20 percent). "Turn" is the first Hot 100 top 10 (and chart visit) for DJ Snake and the ninth top 10 for Lil Jon, who'd last visited the top tier four years ago as a featured act (with Sean Paul) on Jay Sean's No. 10-peaking "Do You Remember." Lil Jon scores his first top 10 as a lead act since his "Snap Yo Fingers," featuring Paul and E-40, reached No. 7 in May 2006. He tallied his first top 10, "Get Low," with the East Size Boyz and featuring Ying Yang Twins, in 2003."Turn" concurrently crowns the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (2-1).

228.9 million, "Blurred Lines," Robin Thicke featuring T.I. + Pharrell (Aug. 31, 2013) 225.9 million, "Happy," Pharrell Williams (April 12, 2014)
Legendary Status. He could possibly do it next week.
