Older people don't listen to current music? I don't know what the number is but lets say an older person (30+) has kids that listen to current music and also happen to like it. It could happen.

And 99% seems quite high. That is like saying everyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s (the 30+ age group) hates rap except for a few isolated crazy people. Rap emerged as a mainstream form of music in the 80s btw. There is a huge difference between the rappers that were popular in the end of the 20th century (i.e. Tupac, Eminem, Biggie, Dre, Snoop) and many of today's "rappers" such as Iggy Azalea. Don't get me wrong, I like her. But I'm just saying that majority of those people over 30 even those accustomed to hip-hop music growing up would not look favorably at artists such as Iggy Azalea. Not all, but most.

NABD could play as boring to a lot of audiences I've heard NABT enough since the album came out that I should be able to remember it - but I don't. I'd only recognize it if I heard it on the radio because I'd recognize Justin's voice and it would be a song by him I wasn't familiar with but beyond that, I don't remember it. Fancy should be #1 over NABT by far. I would imagine that 99% of people over the age of 30 would cringe if they heard Fancy on the radio (similarly to Turn Down for What) lol. It would make sense for both songs to smash on pop and rhythmic seeing as how people under 30 would typically be the target audience on those two formats... I'm 30. I guess I have about a year left before I start cringing. ;) And 99% seems quite high. Not all, but most. I think that's the same with a lot of genres of music. People tend to associate the 'best' genre with what they grew up and connected with during their emotional teenage/20s. Music they are nostalgia for and lived for. When people reach their 30s and older, their association and connection with music tends to be limited for many reasons (jobs, families, etc. They just have less time for music) so they don't have the time to look favourably on current music. That doesn't mean that current music is necessarily worse than the music from 10, 20, 30, etc years ago. I consider music from the mid-90s to be optimal (for me) over any other period before or since. Unlike most people, I know that it's personal preference and that there is music today that is just as legitimate as music from any other period. How pop music is made has definitely changed but I'm of the minority who believes that pop music doesn't *have* to be real instruments and from the heart and innovative or anything like that. Besides, Pop radio has a target audience and they don't care what people over 30 (or 34, or 26, or whatever the demographic cutoff is) listen to because their audience is younger than that. Hot AC does but for those slightly older crowd (21-36 or whatever Hot AC's demographic is) would be more into hip-hop than the Hot AC of 15 years ago because that age group, as previously mentioned, grew up on pop and hip-hop. That's why Hot AC isn't only light rock anymore. The genre reflects the music of 10 years ago with the hits of today so there'll be increasingly more of that on that chart.

Whenever I see someone making an "old people just don't like X" where X is considered some new fangled artist or type of music I always want to videotape my Mom and her zumba friends prancing around to Eminem, Iggy, and Rihanna lol. Or perhaps they are 30-40 complete exceptions to the rule that all just happen to come together every Friday morning in the same small town.

I mean, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce are technically part of this ancient 30-40 crowd that only listens to...piano ballads and light rock, apparently. I never would have guessed Lil Jon would have a big hit again, but he kept at his same schtick long enough for it to come back in style or be considered a throwback. Or maybe it was just the Vines.

Older people (as we are defining it here to be 30+) have musical tastes that are pretty diverse and can include current stuff. There is no magic switch that turns on in your body that says that once you reach age X you are condemned to a life of listening to Josh Groban.
Everybody has their personal favorites but can like a whole bunch of things. My parents liked a lot of the music I listened to as a kid and I have found that I like alot of the music my kids listen to.

My point is that a majority of people that aren't currently high school or college age don't listen to that kind of music. Not ALL. 30-40 is the target audience of Adult formats and there's a reason they don't typically play hip-hop and club music and stuff like that. Just saying.

In my mid-40s, I know TONS of people who are in that demo and are still very much into what is at the top of iTunes. But I think this is for many reasons. The digital world has bridged generations in a way that wasn't as immediate 30 years ago. Plus, loads of parents listen to what their kids are into.
And the disparity between '90s music and today is not as dramatic as between (say) the 60s and the 90s

I know Skrillex is quite popular among my age group yet I find his music annoying even though I am a big fan of somewhat similar EDM type music (i.e. Turn Down for What, Animals, etc).

That's true but you have to agree that certain songs have their certain target audiences. That's all I was saying before. Of course everyone likes what they likes, regardless of age, it's just that some songs lean toward one audience more and others lean more to another.

1. JOHN LEGEND – All Of Me: 235.837 (-0.475) 2. PHARRELL WILLIAMS – Happy: 169.032 (-3.072) 3. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE – Not A Bad Thing: 158.151 (+1.150) ▲4. KATY PERRY – Dark Horse: 157.356 (-3.161) ▼ Glad to see Justin make it to the top 3! (He's had quite a few, the last of which was Jay-Z's "Holy Grail" IIRC). And it's pretty obvious that it will make the top 2, but #1 is a different story...almost 80M AI away and looks like it's slowing down, while AOM isn't exactly crashing...kinda unlucky...

Of course everyone likes what they likes, regardless of age, it's just that some songs lean toward one audience more and others lean more to another. But it's not like Iggy's song was being sent to AC or some other format where it would be out of place. It was sent to pop, which by its nature isn't targeting 30+ people. So the whole thing about 99% of 30-40 year olds cringing at "Fancy," even if that figure is close to accurate, is a bit moot - the ones who would cringe generally aren't listening to the format anyway, and CHR is such that a big enough hit there doesn't necessarily need other formats to 'feel' like a #1 (though I imagine "Fancy" has some rhythmic and at least a little urban play too, also formats aiming more for younger audiences).

This 30+ being old thing has got to stop. Do you know who were teenagers listening to Salt N Pepa, 2Pac, Dre, Snoop, etc when they came on the scene? People now in this 30-40 range. So, maybe try to have a little higher opinion of them than thinking they're all dinosaurs who cringe at any hint of rap or hip-hop.

from what i have read there was more of a generation gap in music with older people in the 50's and 60's and maybe the 70's where there was a dramatic change in music. from the 80's on music has not really changed that much as older styles tend to make comebacks from time to time .

Two of my favorite topics to discuss in this thread this week :)
1. Old people cringe at listening to one style of music or another 2. The chart is crap because a song I don't like is popular.

100% of the old people I surveyed did NOT like "Fancy." Therefore all old people hate "Fancy."
Can we move on now.

Lol you people take things our of context way too much and accuse people of saying something they never said way too much. Never did I refer to the 30+ age group as "old". Nor did I say many of the other things you accused me of having said.
