Miranda Lambert’s “Play It Again” debuted last week AFTER a performance on the Billboard Music Awards and sold 107k in its opening frame, by far the best-selling Country song of the week. Luke Bryan’s “Play It Again” once-again holds down a top slot as the #2 song this week while Florida Georgia Line’s “This Is How We Roll (which features Luke) is at #3. #4 is Jake Owen’s “Beachin’,” a song which also scanned past the Gold certification mark and should be well on its way to Platinum before the summer is over. Lady Antebellum’s “Bartender” debuts at #5 with 51k singles sold in its first week. Jake Worthington sells tracks, could be potential hit-making star if he releases the right material. The Voice’s Jake Worthington dominates the second half of the Top 10 with two of the five tracks belonging to him, the first of which is at #6 with “A Country Boy Can Survive,” A duet with Blake Shelton. Lee Brice’s “I Don’t ance” is at #7 but gained 7% over last week while last week’s #7, the fast rising “Drunk On A Plane” gained another 10k in week over week sales numbers to remain in the top 10 at #8. At #9 is Shelton’s “My Eyes,” a tune featuring Gwen Sebastian while Worthington’s “Right Here Waiting” cover rounds out the Top 10. His “Don’t Close Your Eyes” hit #11 this week as well. Notable Tracks include Chris Young’s “Who I Am With You,” Joe Nichols “Yeah,” Tyler Farr “Whiskey In My Water” and Carrie Underwood’s “Keep Us Safe” from the ACM Honors program. Jerrod Niemann’s “Drink To That All Night” jumps up the chart seven slots this week to #14 thanks to a Pitbull remix (they’re selling ‘em both as the same track here). Sales are now at 759k for the divisive track. Chris Young’s “Who I Am With You” is right behind Niemann’s track and it continues to sell and has moved 271k to date. Joe Nichols “Yeah” has sold nearly 237k while Dustin Lynch’s “Where It’s At” continues to find audiences and has sold 152k in just 6 weeks. Carrie Underwood’s “Keep Us Safe” scanned 24k while Justin Moore’s “Lettin’ The Night Roll” jumped 66% over last week to #22 from #30 and is our Riser of the Week. Tyler Farr has now moved 367k copies of “Whiskey In My Water” while Brantley Gilbert’s “Bottoms Up has moved nearly 1.2 million tracks and gained 69% over last week (thanks to the album hitting stores, no doubt). Outside The Top 30 Notes: Luke Bryan “Drink A Beer” up 31% with sales now at 1.1 million to date. Florida Georgia Line’s “People Back Home” track moves 15k to jump in chart at 36. 90k tracks sold to date. Craig Campbell “Keep Them Kisses Comin’” at #39 with 143k RTD. This week, the 23-year old female rapper from Australia accomplishes something that nobody has done since the Beatles in early 1964—hold down the top two spots on the Hot 100 with his or her first two chart singles. "Fancy" (featuring Charli XCX) jumps from #2 to #1. Ariana Grande's "Problem," which features Azalea, jumps from #3 to #2. The Beatles held down #1 and #2 for six weeks in early 1964 with their first two Hot 100 entries, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You." Broadening the discussion beyond initial chart hits, Azalea is the third female artist to hold down the top two spots simultaneously. R&B star Ashanti was the first female artist to achieve the feat. She scored in the spring of 2002 with her own smash "Foolish" and Fat Joe's "What's Luv?," on which she was featured. Mariah Carey scored in late summer 2005 with "We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off." "Fancy" is the first all-female collaboration to reach #1 on the Hot 100 since "Lady Marmalade" by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk in 2001. Phillips is just the fifth Idol contestant to release two songs that each sold 2 million copies. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have each hit that sales threshold with four songs. Daughtry and Jordin Sparks have also each done it with two. Phillips' achievement is all the more impressive because Idol isn't remotely the powerhouse it was in its early seasons. Clarkson, Underwood, Daughtry and Sparks all appeared in the show's first six seasons. The Charlie Daniels Band's 1979 classic "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the 48th country song to reach that plateau and by far the oldest. It just keeps on selling. You might say it's the "Don't Stop Believin'" of country songs, but it's even older than (by more than two years) than that Journey warhorse. Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" jumps to #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. It's Smith's third #1; his second of 2014. He first topped the U.K. chart in June 2013 as the featured artist on Naughty Boy's "La La La." He scored on his own with "Money On My Mind" earlier this year. Smith is the first artist to land two #1 hits (as a lead artist) in the U.K. in 2014. "Stay With Me" leaped from #69 to #49 on last week's Hot 100.

The song re-enters at No. 14 thanks to the popularity of a viral video featuring the track. Meanwhile, Jackson scores his milestone 50th Hot 100 hit, as "Slave to the Rhythm," from his new album "Xscape," debuts at No. 45. "Billie Jean" revisits the Hot 100 with 95 percent of its chart points from streaming. It debuts on the Streaming Songs chart at No. 2 thanks to the stylings of Brett Nichols, a junior at Pitman High School in Turlock, Calif. Nichols performed Jackson's iconic dance sequence from 1983's "Motown 25" TV special for his school's talent show, with the clip featuring the song's original audio. The video went viral and Jackson's classic bows on Streaming Songs with 11.2 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 25 (a 320 percent surge), according to Nielsen BDS. It debuts with 95 percent of its streams from YouTube (non-Vevo) activity. "Billie Jean," from "Thriller," the best-selling studio album of all time (it's been certified 29 times Platinum by to the RIAA), spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in a 24-week run in 1983. REID'S WRITING 'RHYTHM' An additional feat regarding "Slave": The song marks a return to the Hot 100 for L.A. Reid as a songwriter after a nearly 20-year break. The current chairman and CEO of Epic Records co-wrote "Slave" with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Kevin Roberson and Daryl Simmons. Reid co-wrote and co-produced numerous Hot 100 hits with Babyface in the '80s and early '90s for the likes of Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Boyz II Men and Bobby Brown. Reid eventually stepped back from writing in the early '90s, focusing on his then-role as co-president of LaFace Records. Until "Slave," Reid had last charted as a writer on the Oct. 29, 1994, Hot 100, when Braxton's "You Mean the World to Me" spent its final week on the chart. It had peaked at No. 7. "Slave" dates back to 1989, when Reid and Jackson collaborated in writing and recording sessions for what would become Jackson's 1991 album "Dangerous." Chart Watch: Miranda & Carrie Double Up"Somethin' Bad," a duet by the hottest female country singers who aren't named Taylor Swift, is this week's top new entry on the Hot 100 at #39. The official credit is Miranda Lambert Duet With Carrie Underwood. It's from Lambert's fifth major label studio album, Platinum, which is due June 3. The song enters Hot Digital Songs in the top 10 this week. Digital sales rank: #10 (107K). That rather stiff billing was also used on Underwood's 2011 hit "Remind Me," which was credited Brad Paisley (Duet With Carrie Underwood). Both Lambert and Underwood have had success with duets. As a member of Pistol Annies, Lambert was featured on Blake Shelton's "Boys 'Round Here," which reached #12 last year. Underwood paired with Randy Travis for "I Told You So" (#9 in 2009) and with Paisley for the aforementioned "Remind Me" (#17 in 2011). So where's the logic that Billie Jean 11MM viral streams and probably minimal sales and airplay ranks HIGHER than LNFSG, which has substantial sales and airplay. C'mon that's ridiculous. Are we seriously going to discuss this again? Get over it already. People have a right to complain about something over and over again if the problem is not being fixed. And it is a problem. Why should streaming for that video count? It is completely obvious that people watched that video because of the kid's dance moves, not because of the song. "Billie Jean" should not have re-entered this week. These random re-entries of old songs is getting ridiculous. Now had the video for "Billie Jean" got a sudden surge in streaming, then yeah, that would make sense, but that's not what happened. At least when artists create viral videos in the form of something like "Wrecking Ball," then people are searching out the video because of the song, and it works. "Wrecking Ball"'s digital sales surged the week of the video's release. "Billie Jean"'s sales? Nope.

lol at Sam Smith's iTunes #1 debuting at #92 (regardless of being an instant grat, it still got there). Nice debut for Somethin' Bad, I'd like to see it have a good run when country radio decides to play it someday.

Eh, not that I've seen the video but if it's a kid doing a dance routine of MJ's, surely that's related to the song? Not really. It's a video that contains a bunch of clips from some random high school's talent show, so it actually includes a few clips of different songs, but then it ends with about 2-2.5 minutes of some kid dancing to "Billie Jean" mimicking Michael Jackson's moves. He's very good at it and it is impressive, but everyone watched the video because the kid was good at dancing, not because of "Billie Jean." He could have been doing those moves to any song and people would still watch it.

Then there is the issue illegal downloads, which are also a form of a song's popularity and are (for obvious reasons) ignored. If you look through all the things that are included and excluded on the Hot 100, there is a pattern. Things that are included on the Hot 100 make money each time they are bought/spun/streamed/etc. Everything that is excluded involves either no monetary transaction, or the label is paid up front (such as with commercials, which I suspect is why Let Her Go's commercial didn't count for the Hot 100).

So you're telling me that you think that the short clip of "Billie Jean" being used in that video gave the record company so much revenue that only 13 more songs earned more money for their record labels than it did last week? YouTube gives like, what, not even a full cent per stream? I do think the Hot 100 should reflect revenue. (Check my posting history, I've said it multiple times.) However, it doesn't even come close to doing that. The largest component of the Hot 100 is sales, correct? The component that gives the most revenue is in fact airplay, though.
