I never really got the hype of the debuts that occurred in the 1995-1998 period (and in some cases, thereafter), because it was in mid-95 that Billboard changed the rules so that a single had to have a full week of sales before being able to chart. That's when labels started the strategy of building airplay and then dropping the single. So, the No. 1 debuts that occurred are fine and dandy, but the peaks themselves were more noteworthy than the fact that they debuted there.

ITT: Every poster disproves that Ariana was the first artist to have two top ten debuts.

Labels just started timing their releases to gain maximum exposure the first week out. Often times you had songs debuting low on sales charts due to street date violations and record company incompetence.

It's going to pass FW next week... Not sure how its not bigger than Firework. Sales wise, Firework is at 6.5 million+, Dark Horse is around 5 million, 1-1.5 million is a pretty big difference to me. Even if the airplay power of Dark Horse was massive. For now though. Firework has been out for almost 4 years and has sold pretty well over the years since its time on the charts I think. Dark Horse will probably surpass it, or come close to doing so by the time this year ends. It'll get another boost in sales during the holidays due to countdown shows and gift cards.

Damn, that's the first 6M update since Happy I think...Top 25 debut on Radio Songs and top 10 debut on the Hot 100 are very possible for Maps... and it looks like this might be the last day in the top twenty for Talk Dirty...yet meanwhile Counting Stars is still in it hahaha

I can't wait to see how many chart entries Ed Sheeran will have on the Hot 100 next week.

Demi- prior to summer 1995, a single could enter the Hot 100 before it actually had sales- i.e. the chart date corresponding to the week the single was released.
Those are some strong gains for "Maps."

That chart policy was a mess few times.
As HG said, Billboard would debut a song based on only radio points, but only if it was scheduled to be released commercially that week.
Occasionally there would suddenly be a two week surprise distribution delay, and the single would be on the chart for three weeks 'unofficially'. Happened only a few times, but enough to inspire the 1995 rule change, which brought with it sudden huge debuts. (and further inspired the labels to withhold commercial singles in order to make conspicuous debuts)

It was a big deal when You Are Not Alone by MJ debuted at #1. It's the first time it happened in the US. It happened a bunch in Europe, but not here until then.

"Maps" seems like it's going to be a hit but I don't think on the level of "One More Night", "Payphone", "Moves Like Jagger", these were simply huge. A bit premature don't you think?

After doing this tons of times I've discovered the previously used colours button !!! (yes I was adjusting the filter every line to try and match the others)
Maps could make it top 20 before Wednesday

Quite surprised that Tennis Court hasn't done better than that so far. It's not very different from Team.
Or maybe that's the problem actually.

"Maps" is so catchy but it's a grower. I'm not shocked it's not slaying on iTunes, but it will go Top 5 on the Hot 100.

I was underwhelmed by Maps compared to their best smashes (Makes Me wonder, Moves Like Jagger).. It's decent but lacks a bit of imagination.

Just curious, why is the media base site in Portuguese?
Edit: And if the editors live in Brazil and Portugal, than how come they are editing the U.S. stats? Sorry, I'm just curious.
