So Maps may end up around 36-40MM after 8th day, if it keeps gaining like the past few days?

So Ariana has four weeks at #2 with Problem, but she was actually closest to the #1 position when she was #3 in her debut week. :(
This doesn't happen often correct? I only recall something similar happened to Bad Romance when it was closest to #1 in the week it was #3 behind Tik Tok and Empire State of Mind.

Yes but it got more points during it weeks at number two, just that Fancy had a bigger lead as it had massive points (60k+ in some weeks)

I never really got the hype of the debuts that occurred in the 1995-1998 period (and in some cases, thereafter), because it was in mid-95 that Billboard changed the rules so that a single had to have a full week of sales before being able to chart. That's when labels started the strategy of building airplay and then dropping the single. So, the No. 1 debuts that occurred are fine and dandy, but the peaks themselves were more noteworthy than the fact that they debuted there. You can say that about so many rules, though. Prior to that rule change regarding debuts, songs could have a fairly high debut if the commercial release was delayed and airplay was high. More than that songs could also make a big jump to #1. During the time of limited commercial availability, there were obviously songs that peaked higher than they would have simply because they were commercially available. In the past few years we saw big jumps up the chart because a song would chart based on 1-2 days of airplay, and then skyrocket the next week because of downloads starting on Tuesday (the top 10 jumps to #1 all came in the past 7 years). In other words, a lot of "records" are are aided by circumstance. In terms of #1 debuts, even if the rule change allowed them to happen, it still took a lot of popularity for songs to achieve the feat. There have been 21 debuts at #1 spread across nearly 20 years, meaning an average of 1 per year. So, it's still fairly rare. Those songs all got short-changed in terms of longevity, so it hurt them in other ways ("One Sweet Day" would finish higher on all-time charts if it had charted weeks when it was airplay-only).

That is true. Except, of course, those American Idol singles, which just sold enough out of the gate to enter on top (a few of those years occurred during the commercial-singles-drought chart era, and in the early years of digital sales).

lol @ Maps. Radio loves Maroon 5
Happy and Dark Horse falling at the same rate pretty much neck and neck. I think that's good for Happy in year end stats

Not sure that will make a difference from here on out. They have see sawed the last couple weeks. Dark Horse was actually ahead of Happy on Hot 100 airplay 2 charts ago.
'Happy' has had a run as nearly as long as Dark Horse in the top 10 and many more weeks at #1. Some of those weeks were commanding leads.
Although the radio decline is neck and neck, the sales decline is not. Happy is #17, Dark Horse is #47

Demi- prior to summer 1995, a single could enter the Hot 100 before it actually had sales- i.e. the chart date corresponding to the week the single was released. I don't think that is true. However you can show me the error of my ways. What songs charted based on airplay only prior to 1995? You could not enter the HOT 100 based on airplay alone. I've never known a single to enter the HOT 100 based on airplay alone before 1999.

Ariana so close to #1 on radio. Pop and rhythmic too. If only she got #1 on streaming, she could have been #1 on all 3 components but not the Hot 100. Has that happened before?

So Maps will get about 17k chart points but that doesn't include streaming although with just 2 million worldwide views for the official audio it won't get too many points from that. However it will certainly debut in the top 15 and quite possibly (and hopefully) in the top 10!

Demi- a fellow poster also commented on it after my post. :) If a single was being released the week corresponding with the Billboard issue date, then it could debut on that week's chart, with no sales points. That changed circa summer of 1995.

That chart policy was a mess few times. As HG said, Billboard would debut a song based on only radio points, but only if it was scheduled to be released commercially that week. Occasionally there would suddenly be a two week surprise distribution delay, and the single would be on the chart for three weeks 'unofficially'. Happened only a few times, but enough to inspire the 1995 rule change, which brought with it sudden huge debuts. (and further inspired the labels to withhold commercial singles in order to make conspicuous debuts) That wasn't a bad rule change. I don't see how anyone could say the 1995 rule change wasn't fair in this instance. Additionally, songs got airplay all the time but couldn't be purchased officially as singles especially if the artist was popular at the time. I think the BB HOT 100 1995 policy makes sense for the time period.

Adonis, look earlier in this thread. Hot 100 practice in the late 80s and early 90s allowed songs to chart the week before they were physically on sale. I don't know why; Maybe chart week vs retail delivery date?
No one really cared at the time because so few radio songs were held back commercially. When the practice became more common (post U Can't Touch This / Bartman) readers of BB became more aware of date discrepancies and the policy changed in early 1995 to only chart once the song had a full week on the shelves.
(OOPs - I see you saw that since I started posting! :)))
