I was so ready for new Britney... and this is great! At least makes the wait for Pretty Girls less unbearable. :)

Bradley Stern's (muumuse.com) review hits the nail on the head. ''...Yet the true, actual brilliance of Britney recording a song like “Tom’s Diner” is that Britney Spears has no business singing about a solo trip to a Manhattan diner. Think about the scenario for just a moment: It’s preposterous to imagine she’d make it more than even a few minutes before the inevitable fan panic and paparazzi swarm that would quickly overtake her anonymous newspaper reading session. In that way, “Tom’s Diner” as sung by Britney Spears takes on a whole new meaning: It feels like the fantasy of somebody who hasn’t been Of The People since she was 17 years old now flirting with the idea of being entirely anonymous. There’s a For The Record-like sadness to the idea of Britney daydreaming about flipping through the paper, entirely disconnected from the events happening around her. (“There’s a story of an actor who had died while he was drinking, it was no one I had heard of…”) It’s genius, in my opinion. Where Moroder’s chosen to end Britney’s version of the song is also, intriguingly, more mysterious (or menacing?) than the original: “I’m feeling someone watching me, and so I raise my head…” And then what, Britney? AND THEN WHAT? It’s a claustrophobic ending, with no real resolution that’s entirely open for interpretation — a Sopranos finale in song form...''. Full article here. When I listened to it for the 1st time I didn't expect it to not cover all of the original's lyrics but after I realised that was it I got major chills. I don't know if it was done on purpose or not but it was beyond genius to end it right there.

I literally had the same thought as the bold. There are layers of appropriateness to this cover.
This is so stupidly good I'm still not over it.

I am loving Tom's Diner and all of the symbolism that I'm reading about. It's definitely her best cover. And she sounds so damn good on it...like...it's not even an amazing or remarkable vocal, but it just fits the song like a glove. Which is of course that sweet spot where she has always taken her best music to that next level.
Edit: I need this to be on iTunes. I also need this to be released as a single. And finally, I need someone to explain why that unnecessary bridge was added in to an otherwise perfect recording.

I need someone to explain why that unnecessary bridge was added in to an otherwise perfect recording. Moroder said that he still needed to get Britney in the studio to "record a bridge". I'm guessing they couldn't get her so he did it himself. I'm not that upset about it, to be honest. It feels a little out of place, but it adds a certain something to the song.

After a couple of listens, I really like "Tom's Diner" and this is definitely her best cover in my opinion. Ugh I hate it when stuff leaks when I'm at work and can't hear it! The same usually happens to me

It doesn't take away from the song, but I think that's just mostly because the rest is that good. Still, he should have left it alone. If Britney couldn't be bothered to record it, clearly it wasn't necessary.

I would've preferred the song without it, but I don't mind it.

Is this even the final version?
I like it. I'm not sure if I'd place it above the DNA remix yet but it is good. It works for Britney because the song requires zero emotion (#shadenotshade). Honestly, I think Britney should look at exploring this type of music more rather than trying to get melodic pop hits. She can clearly pull off songs like this. I think a full-on electronic (read, not pop) album from her would be hot. Let the production bring the emotion.

See, I hear all kinds of emotion in her voice in this track. Or maybe I just insert it given her circumstances. IDK, either way it definitely suits her.

I don't know if it's the fact that I'm craving new Britney music (exacerbated by the fact that I have chosen to not listen to any of the Pretty Girls snippets), but I love her cover. The original is okay but the cover is a massive upgrade. It's in the vein of the type of songs that I absolutely love from her (Unusual You, Trip to Your Heart, And Then We Kiss, etc.).
If they handle "Pretty Girls" properly, using this as a follow-up could be a great way to keep up momentum for the upcoming era.

Finally got to listen. I love it. It's very Britney. Would love to hear it without the vocal effects tho.

Honestly, I think Britney should look at exploring this type of music more rather than trying to get melodic pop hits. She can clearly pull off songs like this. I think a full-on electronic (read, not pop) album from her would be hot. Let the production bring the emotion. This is available online in 320kbps, fully mastered. Demos don't usually leak in that quality. It's the final. I'm also going to argue that, as I said in the 'Pretty Girls' thread, this is the most emotion she's shown on record since In the Zone. It's appropriately melancholy in places, but there's this playful musing throughout. It sounds like a daydream. I think people hear the vocoder effects and automatically default to robotic, but that's not the case with this at all. Bottom line: I can't believe this song came out in 1987 because it's so stupidly appropriate and her execution is a just shy of perfect. Anyway, I'm tipsy but if anyone needs me I'll be trying to control myself from writing an essay on why this s**t is modern art. You cannot convince me Britney is not an ARTIST after this.

Why has no one mentioned the flawless Rihanna shade? "The womanWho has come inShe is shakingHer umbrellaAnd I lookThe other wayI'm pretendingNot to see them"Britney is obviously still upset about the fact that Rihanna laughed at her during the 2007 VMAs and stole Umbrella from her. Autobiographical MASTERPIECE.It's a cover though. Unless Suzanne had a premonition that Rihanna would do that someday.

Guys, I'm in Vegas! And going to see Britney live tonight. I haven't paid much attention at the recent critics of her show, but I remember reading here that she's doing much better. Any comments? Any particularly great moment? I saw her live during the Circus tour and liked the production value but was disappointed with her dancing and 95% lipsyncing Still a britney fan tho :)
