He was wild as a tumbleweed blowin’ Restless like a river runnin’ free When he smiled I knew my heart would be Broken He was gonna leave, That’s the cowboy guarantee

"I wake up and tear drops They fall down like rain I put on that old song we danced to and then I head off to my job Guess not much has changed"
"Punch the clock Head for home Check the phone, just in case Go to bed Dream of you That's what I'm doing these days" - Rascal Flatts ("These Days")
I remember Jeffrey Steele saying how the actual music had already been written and were presented to him and he was asked to write lyrics to the song. At first he said he didn't like to write like that, but decided to give in and write the lyrics. He said thank God I did since it was one of the best written songs he's done and was a huge #1 single. I can relate to this song and that chorus always gets me.

And I remember the smell of his cologne And tonight he has it on - Ashton Shepherd, "Old Memory"
This song is just an absolute masterclass but that lyric in particular just GUTS me. Like you really feel the turmoil that woman is going through with that line, to understand the proximity she is in to be able to smell her former lover's cologne, and just being able to recognize the scent in general because I imagine that it would certainly bring back some 'old memories.'

"I guess she was tired by The time I came along She laugh until she cried I could do no wrong She would always save me Because I was her baby"
"I got a call in Alabama Said come on home to Louisiana And come as fast as you can fly Cause your Mama really needs you And said she's gotta see you She might not make it through the night The whole way I drove 80 So she could see her baby"
"It looked like she was sleeping" And my family had been weepin' By the time that I got to her side And I knew that she'd been taken And my heart it was breakin' I never got to say goodbye I softly kissed that lady And cried just like, a baby" - Blake Shelton ("The Baby")
This song still gets me every single time I hear it. It's without a doubt one of the saddest endings to a song I've ever heard.

As you leave you'll see the nursery Oh she left me without mercy Taking nothing but our baby and my heart -"The Grand Tour" - George Jones (love Lee Ann Womack's version of this on the Opry for George's 80th birthday... so good)
Kept some letters by his bed dated 1962 He had underlined in red every single "I love you" I went to see him just today But I didn't see no tears All dressed up to go away First time I'd seen him smile in years -"He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones (the whole song is a masterpiece, hard to pick out one part of it)
Everything that I've got is just what I've got on I ain't got a dime but what I got is mine I ain't rich but Lord I'm free -"Amarillo By Morning - George Strait
It wasn't long after a benevolent man took me in off the streets One week later I was pourin' his tea in a five room hotel suite I charmed a king, a congressman, and an occasional aristocrat And then I got me a Georgia mansion and an elegant NY townhouse flat And I ain't gone back -"Fancy" - Reba
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette -"Whiskey Lullaby" - Brad Paisley/Alison Krauss

Glad to see some people crediting the writers of these masterful lyrics. . The "artists" seldom have anything to do with creating them. . They merely deliver the words to the masses.

Thought of a few more:
"Well you do what you do And you pay for your sins And there's no such thing As what might've been That's a waste of time Drive you outta your mind" -Tim McGraw, "Red Ragtop" (Jason White)
"There's one thing that's real clear to me, no one dies with dignity. We just try to ignore the elephant somehow." -Jason Isbell, "Elephant"
"Well I'm thankful for the things I have, And all the things I don't. And I've got dreams that will come true, And I've got some that won't. Most the time I just walk the line wherever it goes. 'Cause you can't hang yourself if you ain't got enough rope." -Chris Knight, "Enough Rope"

"There's one thing that's real clear to me, no one dies with dignity. We just try to ignore the elephant somehow."-Jason Isbell, "Elephant" Love this song. And that line is my favorite from "Elephant", but I also love the line; "When she was drunk she made cancer jokes, made up her own doctor's notes. Surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone." Also from Isbell's 'Southeastern' album, "Cover Me Up" is full of great lyrics. "I made it through, cause somebody knew, I was meant for someone" "So girl leave your boots by the bed, we ain't leavin' this room, Til someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom. It's cold in this house and I ain't goin' out to chop wood So cover me up, and know you're enough to use me for good." "But home was dream, one that I'd never seen, 'til you came along" That entire 'Southeastern' album is a lyrical masterpiece.

Bumping this because I just heard "Just To See You Smile," by Tim McGraw and the line:
And yesterday I knew just what you wanted When you came walkin' up to me with him So I told you that I was happy for you And given the chance I'd lie again
Slays me every single time I hear it.

Not really a "best lyric" but certainly one of the most interesting and quirky to me, courtesy of Mark McGuinn's "Unusually Unusual", which was a #10 peaking R&R hit for Lonestar in January of 2003.
"She said, hey man, did you know somebody left your grass out, in the yard all night" :)
