I have felt for quite awhile that we need a thread for great lyrics in general, not necessarily just opening lyrics. Here are some of my favorites:
-"So pack up all your things. Just leave some air to breathe. A million toxic tears fallin' like rain 'round here." Sara Evans, Put My Heart Down
-"In here the atmosphere's just right for heartache." Merle Haggard, Swingin' Doors
-"One Sunday morning, she didn't go to church. He wondered why she didn't leave. He went up to the bedroom, found a note by the window, with the curtains blowing in the breeze." Martina McBride, A Broken Wing
-"There's no use crying over spilled perfume." Pam Tillis, Spilled Perfume
-"We'll put a boot in your ass; it's the American way." Toby Keith, Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue
-"Funny the things we bottle up come streamin' out when you feel enough. There is a trust the cautious will lack, but now that we've touched there's no holding back." Terri Clark, Empty
-"You know, this single life I'm livin' ain't all it's cracked up to be. So you've come to the wrong place if what you want is sympathy." -Terri Clark, If I Were You
-"Here she comes, a walkin' talkin' true love." -George Strait, Blue Clear Sky
-"'Cause I don't wanna see me leavin' in her eyes. And I can't stand to watch her watch me make her cry. And I don't know a right way I can do her wrong, so I don't wanna be here in the morning when she wakes up and finds me gone." Tim McGraw, When She Wakes Up (And Finds Me Gone)
***And my absolute favorite line of all time:***
-"There's a shadow much darker than the valley of death when you fear the reaper might not come today." Reba McEntire, Moving Oleta

"I just climbed out of a cottonwood tree. I was running from some honey bees. Drip dryin in the summer breeze. After jumping into Calico Creek. I was walkin' down an old dirt road. Past a field of hay that had just been mowed. Man I wish you just left me alone. Cause I was almost home" - Craig Morgan (Almost Home)
I'll probably have more later. Lots of great lyrics in this genre.

Today I caught myself reliving how it used to be, at a table for two - just you and me. But talking to an empty chair and laughing right out loud, turned everybody's head and left no doubt. I'm a broken woman, close to breaking down. - Reba McEntire, "Close To Crazy"
This sun is blinding me as it wakes me from the dark. I guess the world didn't stop for my broken heart. - Reba McEntire, "For My Broken Heart"
If I had only known I'd never hear your voice again, I'd memorize each thing you ever said. And on those lonely nights, I could think of them once more, keep your words alive inside my head. - Reba McEntire, "If I Had Only Known"
So unaware, I foolishly believed that you would always be there. But then came a day, and I turned my head and you slipped away. - Reba McEntire, "If I Had Only Known"
I won't ask about your family, please don't ask me about mine. This is never what I wanted, and it's killing me to say, it just has to be this way. - Reba McEntire, "It Just Has To Be This Way" (w/ Vince Gill)
Somehow mamas always know, 'cause they should've been home an hour ago. When she pulled up, it was just going down. She turned her headlights off, didn't make a sound. She heard her baby crying 'no,' but he wouldn't stop. Her heart went cold and her blood ran hot. With a pistol in her hand, she opened his door. You don't want to see mama go to war. - Reba McEntire, "Maggie Creek Road"
So many promises never should be spoken, now you know what loving him costs. Now you're even talking divorce, and you weren't even married. - Reba McEntire, "On My Own" (w/ Linda Davis, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood)
You're the one for me. Time doesn't seem to disagree. Baby, I'm still not over you getting over me. - Reba McEntire, "Over You"
All her friends say 'what a pity, what a loss,' and in the end when she was barely hanging on, all she could say is she thinks his name was John. - Reba McEntire, "She Thinks His Name Was John"
Please, don't say I'm wasting my time. I've got nothing but time. - Reba McEntire, "'Til You Love Me"
The sunlight, the moonlight are beyond my control, and there are stars in the heavens that I'll never hold. But if dreams give you power, then I'm strong enough to offer my heart and never give up, 'til you love me. - Reba McEntire, "'Til You Love Me"
If destiny called and I missed my cue, do I get one more chance? Oh, how I wish I knew. - Reba McEntire, "What If It's You"
If I ever hold you, I'll never let go - but if I never do, how will I know? - Reba McEntire, "What If It's You"
You're driving home at the end of the day, you'll find yourself coming by my place. Yeah, you always have a good excuse. - Reba McEntire, "When Love Gets A Hold Of You"

"I've got a lot to be thankful for. One of those things is the magic door that opens up back to the time when I was a kid, to the sound of the crickets and the katydids. It's called home" Dolly Parton, "Home"

"And there was a God in heaven and the world made perfect sense. We were young and were in love, we were easy to convince" Trisha Yearwood, "The Song Remembers When"
"For all the miles between us and for all the time that's passed, you would think I haven't gotten very far . And I hope my hasty heart will forgive me just this once if I stop to wonder how on earth you are. But that's just a lot of water underneath a bridge I burned, and there's no use in backtracking around corners I have turned. Still, I guess some things we bury are just bound to rise again. For even if the whole world has forgotten, the song remembers when" Trisha Yearwood, "The Song Remembers When"
(I could just put that whole song, haha).

Doug Stone I'd Be Better Off (In a Pine Box) "I said the night you left me / Nothin' worse could ever happen / But seeing you with someone else proved that I was wrong / And when your eyes met mine / I knew that you were gone forever / Along with all the reasons, I had for hanging on / I'd be better off in a pine box" Clint Black State of Mind "Ain't it funny how a melody can bring back a memory / Take you to another place in time / Completely change your state of mind"
(Sorry if any of these are reposts)

^Sara's "Real Fine Place" album was nearly flawless in my opinion, love it so much. Agreed. It's my personal favorite from Sara. I still though was disappointed that "Missing Missouri", "New Hometown" or even "Supernatural" weren't singles. "Missing Missouri" probably being my favorite album track ever from Sara.

"Well Miller Lite ain't my brand. But I drink one every now and then - In his honor" - Tracy Lawrence (If I Don't Make It Back)
This and when he says "And I introduced Amy to a friend of my Monroe, he's a good ol' boy, but you know, she just ain't ready." That song is one the saddest and best written songs I've ever heard.

"Sometimes a melody feels like a memory" -Eric Church's Springsteen
This lyric is exactly how I hear music; primarily I hear melodies, harmonies, chords & keys and that's what gives me an emotional response to a song. Not so much the lyrics, so this line (ironically the lyric) really stuck with me. I think it's just brilliant.

"Lately I've been lonely, Lord knows I don't like that feeling, anymore than you like feeling lonely too" - Craig Morgan (I Want Us Back)
"I just wanted you to know, he ain't your regular Joe" - Ashton Shepherd (Regular Joe) Her voice is just amazing, in so many ways.
"We'll laugh about the old days, and catch up on the new, yeah I'll see you when I see you, 'til then my prayers are with you, and I hope it's some day soon" - Jason Aldean (See You When I See You)
Just to name a few right now.

"In the midst of the music I tell her I love her/We both laugh cause we know it isn't true" - Kenny Chesney "Anything But Mine"
"I don't need to check that message/I know what it says/'Baby, I still love you'/Don't mean nothing when there's whiskey on your breath" - Lee Ann Womack "Last Call"
"Give me a chance to bow out gracefully/'Cause that's how I want you to remember me" - Lonestar "Smile"
"Oh, she sure looks good but she won't ever be /As good as I was to you" - Lorrie Morgan "Good As I Was To You"
"Against the odds I'll roll the dice/I guess my heart has won despite all good advice" - Martina McBride "Some Say I'm Running"
"And she still goes to church with her Momma/Yeah 'cause that's the right thing to do/But she'll tell you that she's gone out dancin' with a trucker or two/And then she'll wink at you" - Matraca Berg "Good 'Ol Girl"
"You hang on till you can't hang on/Then you learn to let go" - Pam Tillis "Let That Pony Run"
"I want bells to ring, a choir to sing/The white dress, the guests, the cake, the car, the whole darn thing" - Shania Twain "No One Needs To Know"

George Strait The Cowboy Rides Away "I knew the stakes were high right from the start / When she dealt the cards, I bet my heart / Now I just found a game that I can't play / And this is where the cowboy rides away"
She'll Leave You With a Smile "At first she's gonna come on strong / Like She'll love you all night long / Like it's going out of style / Then she'll leave you with a smile"
Poison "You can learn to love anything / Even a bird in a cage will sing a song / Even it's wrong / Even if it kills you in the end / You can learn to love anything / Trade your heart and soul for a ball and chain / Anything can bring you pleasure, even pain / Pick your poison"
Alan Jackson Gone Crazy "Here i am alone again tonight / in this old empty house / its hard to learn what you don't think you need / that you can't live without / never leave the sound of the telephone / but ever since you left / i've been gone"
So You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore "I’ll be the bad guy / I’ll take the black eye / When I walk out / You can slam the door / I’ll be the S.O.B / If that’s what you need from me / So you don’t have to love me anymore"

Emmylou Harris - Boulder To Birmingham Well, you've really got me this time / And the hardest part is knowing I'll survive
Katrina Elam - Drop Dead Gorgeous (the whole song, really) Baby, your looks could kill / Someday I hope they will
Tammy Wynette - Til I Can Make It On My Own 'Til I get used to losing you, let me keep on using you
Martina McBride - When You Love a Sinner You blame the cold for the winter, when you love a sinner
The Wreckers - Tennessee There's no lack of arms around me / But I still wonder if somewhere I went wrong
Lori McKenna - Unglamorous Frozen dinner, jelly glass of wine / Tastes just fine
Lori McKenna - Shake Time does not waste itself A dream cannot wake itself The truth cannot disgrace itself An unwritten prayer cannot save a lost soul Arms cannot embrace themselves A heart cannot break itself And I cannot shake myself from you
I could spend a whole day here lol As said above, the lyrics are my favorite part of country music and music in general, and the lyrics in country songs are what brought me to listen to country music in first place, so there's a lot of songs we could post. I'm really enjoying readings this topic!

Little Big Town - To Know Love Be so close I can hear you breathe. Be the end and the in between.
Little Big Town - Novocaine Come on let me kiss and make it better cause better ain't the best I can do.
Jennifer Nettles - Thank You I wanna say I love you and if we never meet again. You should know you have changed my life just by being a friend, oh.
Jennifer Nettles - Smoke & Mirrors I know love ain't always a fairytale but I tell you baby it's just as well. A heart must know the tears for it to recognize the laughter. And my heart keeps laughing most of the time. And you gave me yours and I gave you mine and that is quite enough for my happy ever after.
Sugarland - I Won't Cry Your hurricane heart won't quit, it keeps pounding on me.
Sugarland - Just Might Make Me Believe I used to believe in us when times got tough but lately I'm afraid that even love is not enough.
Garrett Hedlund & Leighton Meester - Give Into Me - I know Faith did a version but I prefer this one. You're gonna take my hand. Whisper the sweetest words. And if you're ever sad, I'll make you laugh, I'll chase the hurt.
I'll be back with some more soon.

"The starving children have been replaced by souls out on the street. We give a dollar when we pass, and hope our eyes don't meet. We pencil in, we cancel out, we crave the corner suite. We kiss your ass, we make you hold, we doctor the receipt".
Mary Chapin Carpenter - "Stones In The Road"
So cynical, but so true...she has a knack for writing excellent lyrics.

"I'll keep talkin' and talkin', I swear I won't give you a moment's peace You'll never again have to look at my face but you'll always hear from me." Chely Wright - Object of Your Rejection
"Seductive highs, destructive lows. Words that fly too fast, feet that move too slow." "It can fall as hard as it wants to, gingerly drip down a lovers face. Cry for hours and weeks on end and never feel a bit out of place. It can feed a field, put out a fire and never feel the pain. I wish I were the rain." Shedaisy - I Wish I Were the Rain
"I don't think about black in terms of gray or revelations in the night of day I don't think about cold in terms of ice or second chances happening twice." Shedaisy - In Terms of Love
"Do you ever raise your eyes as he's walking out the door and say "where you goin' this time darlin'? Do you listen to the lies and let him just go back for more knowing he'll come home again? Yes, I wonder how it feels to wake up in his arms beside him every morning At the end of the day he still turns to you, the one who's always been there for him. Why do I do it - put myself through it? All it proves is you lose every time Still here I am, lovin' your man." Mindy McCready - Lovin' Your Man
"I bought a new red dress to lift my spirits up. Just like you did, honey, it cost me way too much" Mindy McCready - You'll Never Know

I'll have to revisit this...excellent topic!

Great topic. One of my favorite things about country music is that the lyrics can double as fine literature. Here are some of my favorite lines and verses rather that strike me as profound of clever. There are tons more, but at the moment I'll limit it to ones I can think of off the top of my head:
"Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose Nothin' ain't worth nothin', but it's free." -Kris Kristofferson, "Me And Bobby McGee"
"I've fought with the devil Got down on his level But I never gave in, so he gave up on me." -Keith Whitley, "I'm No Stranger to the Rain"
"Will you still see me tomorrow?" "No, I got too much to do" Well a question ain't really a question If you know the answer too." -John Prine, "Far From Me"
"And he realized prayin' was the only thing that he hadn't ever tried Well he wasn't sure he knew quite how but he looked up to the sky." -Steve Earle, "Tom Ames' Prayer"
"The devil made me do it the first time, the second time I done it on my own." -Billy Joe Shaver/Waylon Jennings, "Black Rose"
"Take my advice or you'll curse the day You started rollin' down that lost highway." -Hank Williams, "Lost Highway"
"They all say he looks so natural But all I see is a cold dark hole I won't commit this day to memory That ain't the Grandpa that I know." -Patty Loveless, "The Grandpa That I Know"

"Cause it's better to be hated for you are, then be loved for who your not" - Van Zant ("Help Somebody")
"One act of love from someone, can start a chain reaction. It all begins the heart, and the power of one" - Bomshel ("The Power Of One")
"Your blessed with luck I can't explain. You bet a horse cause you liked his name. And man if it didn't win" - Rushlow Harris ("That's So You")
"You don't know what really matters, until you risk it all" - Steve Azar ("You Don't Know A Thing")
"You don't know how to pray, until your scared of what you feel" - Steve Azar ("You Don't Know A Thing")
