It's crazy seeing the Top 20 congested by the same artists:
Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang and Anaconda
Charli XCX - Fancy and Boom Clap
Sam Smith - Latch and Stay With Me
Iggy Azalea - Fancy, Problem and Black Widow (Top 20 last week and more than likely even higher this week)
Ariana Grande - Problem, Bang Bang and Break Free ^^

I think it's an actual song about self-appreciating that is shooting up the chart due to it's catchiness.

I'm honestly starting to get completely apathetic of "Rude".

Most of that might be the fact that I've been hearing the song being played here since December (and the radio stations are still playing this to the ground), but the fact that it is still at #1 in the US is just a complete non-event for me.

I get that, but even with a great song it's hard to breakthrough when you're a new act, and even if you do it usually takes a couple of months and the song climbs the chart slowly while people are still getting to know you. So I was surprised by a new act breaking in the top 10 after only 4 weeks, that's why assumed there must've been a reason for such a fast climb.

Chart Watch: MAGIC! Again Blocks Sam

MAGIC!'s “Rude” holds at #1 for the fifth straight week, again blocking Sam Smith's “Stay With Me,” which holds at #2 for the second week. “Stay With Me” is closing the gap and is still a good bet to reach #1. The ballad rises to #1 on the Radio Songs chart (which measures only airplay), displacing “Rude.”

"Fancy" by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX holds at #3 for the second week. The song is #1 on Top Streaming Songs for the 13th week, which puts it in a tie with Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” for the longest run at #1 since that chart was introduced last year. It’s #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the 12th week.

Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” leaps from #8 to #4 in its fifth week. The song jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (197K). This marks the first time that a female solo artist (working without collaborators or featured artists) has hit #1 on the digital chart since Lorde's “Royals” wrapped up a five-week stay in October 2013. “All About That Bass” is a winning throwback to the girl-group sound of the early 1960s, but the lyric is a contemporary plea for women to accept themselves as they are.

Nico & Vinz's “Am I Wrong” dips from its #4 peak to #5 in its 17th week. The song jumps to #1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart. It's the first #1 by a Norwegian artist since a-ha's “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.” in early 1986. That song stalled at #20 on the Hot 100.

"Bang Bang" by Jessie J + Ariana Grande + Nicki Minaj drops from #6 to #9 in its second week. Grande’s own “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea) dips from #5 to #6. Grande is the only artist who has two hits in this week’s top 10 as a lead (or co-lead) artist. (Azalea and Charli XCX each have two hits in the top 10—one as a lead artist and one as a featured artist).

Charli XCX's”Boom Clap” inches up from #11 to #10 in its 10th week. It's her third top 10 hit; her first as a lead artist. She has previously made the top 10 as the featured artist on Icona Pop's “I Love It” (#7 in 2012) and Iggy Azalea's “Fancy” (which recently logged seven weeks at #1). “Boom Clap” is from The Fault In Our Stars soundtrack, which reached #5 on The Billboard 200.

OneRepublic's “Love Runs Out” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song peaked at #15 a few weeks ago.

Movie legend Lauren Bacall, who died yesterday, got a name-check in two top 10 hits: Bertie Higgins's “Key Largo” (#8 in 1982) and Madonna's “Vogue” (#1 in 1990).

Well, I bet you didn’t see this coming: Nicki Minaj this week pulls ahead of Michael Jackson on Billboard's official tally of artists with the most Hot 100 hits. Minaj logs her 51st Hot 100 hit as her new “Anaconda” debuts at #19. Jackson has amassed 50 chart hits, from 1971's “Got To Be There” to two hits this year: “Slave to the Rhythm” and “Love Never Felt So Good,” a from-the-grave collabo with Justin Timberlake.

Not to put too fine a point on it, how on earth can this possibly be? Minaj is a hot artist, no question about it, but she didn’t appear on the Hot 100 until February 2010 (when she was featured on Lil Wayne's “Knockout”). She didn't make the Hot 100 as a lead artist until June 2010 (when she charted with “Your Love”).

Jackson, it goes without saying, is one of the most successful artists in music history.

Has Billboard's adding machine shorted out? No. This is all about changing customs and practices in the music business. Nowadays, featured credits allow artists to rack up huge numbers of hits in a hurry. In Jackson's day, artists had to earn every hit on their own.

"Anaconda" is just Minaj’s 20th Hot 100 hit as a lead (or co-lead) artist. The rest of her hits have been featured credits. By contrast, Jackson was in the lead (or co-lead) spot on all 50 of his Hot 100 hits. Jackson could have padded his tally a little bit if he had elected to take a featured credit on Rockwell's “Somebody's Watching Me” (#2 in 1984) or Diana Ross's “Eaten Alive” (#77 in 1985), but he didn't.

The situation with featured credits has gotten so out-of-hand that Joel Whitburn, the author of a definitive series of chart research books, stopped listing them in the 14th edition of his flagship book, Top Pop Singles. Now, if you look up a given artist, you’ll find only the hits on which that artist was in the lead position — along with a quick rundown of the names of artists on which the artist had featured credits (so you can look them up on your own, if you wish).

In its June 14 issue, Billboard made a move of its own along these lines. It stopped using the same typeface on the Hot 100 for the names of lead and featured artists. Now, the lead artist’s name is in big, bold type and the featured artist’s name is in light, itty-bitty type.

In both cases, these moves make perfect sense.

"Anaconda," which is this week’s top new entry on the Hot 100, borrows heavily from Sir-Mix-a-Lot's “Baby Got Back,” which logged five weeks at #1 in July 1992 (when Minaj was 9 years old). “Anaconda” is from Minaj's upcoming third studio album, The Pink Print.

Minaj has a second song on this week’s Hot 100: “Bang Bang,” a co-equal collabo with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, which drops from #6 to #9 in its second week. Will Minaj have two songs in the top 10 before long? Stay tuned.

What's with the features is year all of a sudden in pop music? Not just with single releases but in albums as well. Hell some of these albums are over 50% feature credits, esp Ariana and J.Lo's latest efforts.

Features are a quick way for acts to rack up number of hits, in whatever threshold (Hot 100, top 40, top 10, etc.). I'm glad that these outlets (billboard included, in regard to the all-time acts list) has taken this into consideration.

Features started to get out of control in mid- to late-1990s. It was an effective way of introducing new acts without doing the full traditional duet route.

I'm aware of when features started gaining popularity, especially among R&B/Rap, but pop music hasn't been this saturated with features at the same time in a while.
