Yes, that was his "Sasha Fierce" moment releasing a pop single that sounded like Matchbox 20 / Goo Goo Dolls.

Yah, that was a big bomb for him, despite having a top 5 single. I think there was a tv special or something to go along with it. It's pretty much a flawless top 10 otherwise.
Interesting we're talking about this today when he is just about to release his first single in many, many years.

But they prefer sales (mofe profit) than #1 Well duh! I was just mentioning that lack of on-demand streaming is what ultimately cost "I Knew You Were Trouble" the #1 spot. It was released prior to the inclusion of YouTube.

It must be heartening for Garth Brooks that Chris Gaines has been forgotten. That was quite the punchline for a few years.

Interesting we're talking about this today when he is just about to release his first single in many, many years. Yeah, they created this whole back story for him about how he was like a washed up former rock star that was trying to make a comeback and did a VH1 Behind the Music for Chris Gaines and everything. It was weird, and people didn't take kindly to it at all.

Iggy Azalea's 'Fancy' Is Billboard's Song of the SummerHaving led Billboard's weekly Songs of the Summer chart from start to finish, the boastful smash, featuring Charli XCX, takes top honors for 2014. The race was essentially over as soon as it began. Having topped the weekly Songs of the Summer chart from start to finish, Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX, takes the title as Billboard's top Song of the Summer for 2014.Billboard's annual Songs of the Summer running tally tracks the most popular songs based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. As "Fancy" crowned the Hot 100 for seven weeks (beginning June 7, a week prior to the start of the Songs of the Summer 14-week tracking period), it ruled the Songs of the Summer chart wire-to-wire. Helping fuel its domination, the track remained in the weekly Hot 100's top five for another six weeks after its reign. "Fancy" is the first Song of the Summer to block all competitors from the weekly Songs of the Summer summit since Katy Perry's "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, the winner for 2010.
"Fancy" is also the second debut hit to earn No. 1 Song of the Summer honors in the last three years, following Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" in 2012. In between, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring T.I. and Pharrell, claimed the honor last year. (Rounding out each of the last five years' top summer hits, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, won for 2011.)
"Fancy" earns its place in the line of top Songs of the Summer by fending off runner-up, and fellow first hit, "Rude" by MAGIC! The pop/reggae romp dethroned "Fancy" on the Hot 100 and led the list for six weeks in July/August.
With "Fancy" and "Rude" at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, maiden Hot 100 hits hold the top two positions on a Songs of the Summer recap for the first time since 1999, when Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" ruled, followed by Jennifer Lopez's "If You Had My Love."
Azalea also boasts the No. 3 Song of the Summer, as featured on Ariana Grande's "Problem." The song peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for five weeks (ranking below "Fancy" in each frame).Azalea is the first woman with two of the top three in a Songs of the Summer seasonal survey. She's just the third artist with such a presence or better overall: in 2009, the Black Eyed Peas locked up the top two spots with "I Gotta Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow," respectively; in 2004, Usher ranked at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, with "Confessions Part II" and "Burn." (Unlike Azalea, both artists served as lead acts on their hits.)

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" holds at No. 1 for a second week, selling 355,000 downloads (down 35 percent). Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" is a non-mover as well, sitting at No. 2 for another week (266,000; down 6 percent). "Bang Bang," by Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, is stationary at No. 3, but posts a big gain -- selling 244,000 (up 54 percent). It's Time to Stop Comparing Ariana Grande to Mariah Carey Minaj's "Anaconda" jumps 6-4 with 188,000 (up 57%), and Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow," featuring Rita Ora, slips 4-5 with 187,000 (though it's up by 32 percent). Eminem's new song, "Guts Over Fear," featuring Sia, debuts at No. 6 with 134,000. Smith's "Stay With Me" falls 5-7 with 125,000 (up 2 percent); Grande's "Break Free," featuring Zedd, rises 17-8 with 118,000 (up 84 percent); and Maroon 5's "Maps" charts a course for No. 9 (up three spots, 98,000; up 25 percent). Charli XCX's "Boom Clap" rounds out the top 10, dipping 8-10 with 90,000 (down 7 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Aug. 31) totaled 4.2 million units, up 5 percent compared with the sum last week (4 million) and down 15 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 158.7 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (185.9 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 20.3 million downloads, up 5 percent compared with last week (19.2 million) and down 10 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (22.6 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 774.6 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (888 million). www.billboard.com/articles/news/6236678/ariana-grande-no-1-album-brad-paisley-kem

Does Nicki have a chance to hit #1 this week?? Did Billboard report the gap between #1 and #2 last week? If so, it should be fairly easy to guess. SIO dropping a lot more than I thought it would (still a great second week).

It's because Garth Brooks was such a sales powerhouse, with multiple diamond albums. If Adele's next album only sold 2 million copies total, it would still be one of the biggest albums of the year but would be considered a disappointment.

They didnt report the difference I didn't think so. It doesn't really matter who's #1 this week. If Nicki gets it good for her, it's not like Taylor didn't get her #1. I'm guess Taylor holds - the airplay gap + sales is pretty big. Will Nicki make up for it in streaming?

"Anaconda" hitting #1 does bother me. Or I'm at least ambivalent about it. It's strange to me that a song can dominate so much in sales and still miss the #1 spot (i.e. "Roar's" first week,), but a song that dominates in YouTube views can fly straight to the top. Does that make it the #1 song in America, or the #1 video?

While it was a monster seller the week after the video came out (despite most of those sales being drawn by the video) and thus it probably did deserve that first week and was truly the most popular song. But after that it was just people enjoying watching her naked and not it being more popular than Royals or Roar and perhaps even Wake Me Up (which would've peaked in the top 2 for sure if it weren't for streaming).

Does that make it the #1 song in America, or the #1 video? I am not really bothered by a song hitting #1 due to streaming of say the audio on Spotify or official music video. It bothers me when a song hits #1 or surges/enters the chart randomly due to it being featured in a viral video that really has nothing to do with the song what so ever. There is so much ambiguity from Billboard in what counts in those cases.

Does that make it the #1 song in America, or the #1 video? Since H100 merges all sorts of data to determine popularity, #1 video is no less valid than a song that sells massively (with limited airplay) - think all the AI songs that went to #1 or Glee songs that somehow little the Billboard charts (seriously, the #1 charting act of all time?) I argued back in the MTV days that video play should count because people were hearing and consuming music that way. What difference did it make that it was through TV or radio? Plus, at that time, MTV play made a huge impact on sales. H100 is far from perfect - think early in digital era when sales were almost a 2:1 ratio to airplay because sales were "low." It took Billboard a few years to adjust that sales were weighted far too heavily because sales soared and so the formula was adjust again.
