Seeing as how Obama didn't actually have a hand in making that version, it would chart separately but be credited to the actual maker of the video. But has this ever happened for one of these songs to chart? How many views would they need to hit the Hot 100 on streaming alone? The Anaconda Fart Remix will probably have close to 5 million views by the end of the week, and I assume at least half of those will be US views. The fart video isn't even a song though lol

Taylor has that second week on lock, right? Unless "All About that Bass" absolutely kills her in streaming

What everybody's forgetting is that a song has to be submitted to Nielsen SoundScan to actually track. I highly doubt whoever made that would bother.

So you mean that if Harlem Shake hadn't been submitted to SoundScan it wouldn't be allowed to chart? ... Yes So Soudscan is the factor that determines chart eligibility as opposed to streaming and airplay?
Soundscan is sales, how is it related to the others?

Gosh - I just watched Anaconda for the first time. She does next to nothing to add to the "Baby Got Back" song... the only thing she does is shake her big booty. I know sales hit #6 last week but the #2 Hot 100 peak is due in large part to the stupid video. I guess I contributed a play to it for the next week, and I regret that.

I'm glad someone agrees with me there! And oh the benefit of living in Canada, where I can watch a music video as many times as I want (not that I ever want to watch Anaconda again, and I didn't even fully watch it the first time, only about a minute of it) without it counting towards a chart (Canadian Hot 100 does not include YouTube streaming points I believe). Although Kworb predicts Anaconda will sell 200k this week, so I guess people actually do like it then! Still though I agree #2 is too high...#4 or #5 is reasonable I would say.

I don't quite get it. So in order to be eligible to chart it needs to have some airplay (which is tracked by broadcast Data Systems)?

^Some songs have charted with very little radio airplay.
Everything is counted electronically.
Years ago, a guy in radio told me some company hired people to listen live and report what radio stations played.

Not really...I think it's just that a label or producer has to basically say (and presumably pay some money) to SoundScan and/or BDS "here is a song, please track its popularity". I'm not so sure "We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow" had any airplay (maybe I am wrong and it did have a measly amount).

Week 1 of 'The Fox' by Ylvis charted based soley on streaming. It was not yet on itunes and clearly had no airplay.
Nowadays there are three components, hitting on one of them will get you in.

Nope, that's not evidence that solely entering streaming works (it might, but not in this case). To quote the article about The Fox on its #29 debut: Source: www.billboard.com/articles/news/5687397/ylvis-viral-hit-the-fox-debuts-on-hot-100That may be true, but it did get a sales release once that video came out. I know the music video was on the iTunes sales chart for a while after it got launched, and I'm pretty sure the song download itself got released at the same time. Either way, that would be a lock for tracking. Also, not to anyone in particular, but in the cases of "We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow" and "Harlem Shake", those were early 2013 songs that were already on digital storefronts but weren't actually known, so they were ready to be tracked once they broke into the mainstream

Of course there are tracks that chart that have absolutely zero airplay. There isn't a requirement for it to have a certain level of airplay, just as tracks can chart with no sales or streaming points.

I listened to Anaconda and freakin' lol'ed. the lyrics are hilarious, and I don't understand how that song isn't classified as a novelty song / or like a Weird Al Yankovic parody song.

So I guess 'The Fox did not have ABSOLUTE ZERO airplay, a DJ or two played it in week 1. I know for a fact it had ZERO sales though. It was at that point an international phenomenon that was just catching on here via streaming and not yet available on US iTunes.
The 50 plays did not make it Hot 100 eligible, the streaming did.
A song only needs points on one of the three components to chart, it does not matter which one

Much of Nicki Minaj falls into a weird in-between category like that. See also: "Stupid Hoe," "Itty Bitty Piggy," or even "Roman's Revenge."

But it needs a certain amount of points from one of the three components to chart. :)

Sales estimates 1. Shake It Off 401,000 People give Suit & Tie a lot of flak and say that it was only a hit because of JT, but do you guys really think Shake it off would have been this big if it was any other but Taylor Swift's? Can you imagine, say, Carly Rae Jepsen's Shake it off even hitting top 10?
