Sales estimates 1. Shake It Off 401,000 People give Suit & Tie a lot of flak and say that it was only a hit because of JT, but do you guys really think Shake it off would have been this big if it was any other but Taylor Swift's? Can you imagine, say, Carly Rae Jepsen's Shake it off even hitting top 10? Of course it wouldn't be. It has a lot of hype. Image is like 75% of why most songs become such big hits and Taylor's image is much more important and better than Carly's.

Can you imagine, say, Carly Rae Jepsen's Shake it off even hitting top 10? no, but that's just the reality of mainstream music, and it certainly doesn't only apply to Taylor. I made this point in the SIO thread once, and it just seems like a really obvious truth that an artist's brand/image is a HUGE factor in pop/mainstream music (which surely applies to other genres as well). I feel like you can pick pretty much any hit song by any trendy artist, and if you assign it to a much less trendy artist, it almost definitely wouldn't have performed as well. of course, this doesn't mean that Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Rihanna, etc. can make literally ANY song into a hit, but the fact that their brands are perceived very favorably right now obviously works in their favor and influences success more than song "quality". basically, the fact that the public's perception of an artist means much more than the "quality" of any individual song they release applies to pretty much every mainstream act.

Quick question about streaming: when you watch a short clip from the song (e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwqiKh1twTM) does it still count as one view? Is there a limit, like the video must feature at least 5 seconds of the song? A video has to feature at least 25-30 seconds of a song, ala "Harlem Shake".

Sales estimates 1. Shake It Off 401,000 4. Anaconda 203,000 kworb.net/ccLast week Shake It Off was 544k and Anaconda was 120k, so the sales difference is going to collapse from 424k to 200k. Between Shake It Off's 9th day and Anaconda gaining steam, it looks the the airplay difference between them won't be too substantial from last week. On the VEVO worldwide chart, "Anaconda" ends the week at 68 million views and "Shake It Off" with 42 million. I'd be completely shocked if at least 15-20 million of Nicki's video streams didn't come from the US. Right now Shake It Off is at 64 million views (+22), Anaconda is at 112 million (+44). I'm not sure how that corresponds to the BB chart week, but could Nicki actually take the top spot this week? <3

If Anaconda has at least 14-15 million more streams than SIO, then Nicki has the #1.

How does the current formula work? The streaming - sales - airplay ratio?

Oh god I dread the thought of Anaconda being number one...I would be fine with Starships or Super Bass or Turn Me On but NOT Anaconda! Maybe Meghan Trainor can come in just in time and take the top spot?

Oh god I dread the thought of Anaconda being number one... Why not? It was already #1 for 6 weeks in 1992. ;)

I would be so happy if Anaconda hit No. 1. Does it really stand a chance though? I figured last week was its only shot.

It is a possibility if thirsty people keep watching the video to look at her ass that it could be #1.

It is a possibility if thirsty people keep watching the video to look at her ass that it could be #1. I really do understand where you are coming from but you are seriously a buzzkill for Anaconda. It's so much fun, it's old Nick Minaj finally mainstream. In her mixtapes she sampled, was dirty, and talked and laughed. This is like that, mixed with the hilarity that this is the follow up to the more toned down attitude she started this era with. While Pills N Potions was successful, it wasn't as big as Nicki needed, so she was basically like, "Alright, that's it. I know exactly how to snatch the spotlight." And shook her ass and rapped about it a lot. And she did it! She got millions of views, so much conversation started, #2 on the hot 100... so much fun twerking in the club! Plus some of those rhymes are quoting gold. So I completely understand why you think it is ridiculous and over sampled and don't want it too successful, but you have to appreciate why people are eating this up.

200k is is still a pretty big difference in the digital sales department (lol) and the airplay gap between "Anaconda" and "Shake It Off" continues to widen (and that gap is already substantial).
Streaming from her music video, at this point, is pretty much the shot Nicki has at dethroning "Shake It Off".
Personally speaking, even though I love the song, it does kind of irk me that "Anaconda" could topple a song that is far more popular in sales and airplay (and likely streaming if available) due to its provacitive video (because in this specific instance it is the provocative video that is resonating more with people as opposed to the song itself - not to say the song isn't resonating at all, it is, just not enough to warrant being #1). I think music videos altogether shouldn't be included in the Hot 100 formula. But hey, it IS the new way of thangs so if it does achieve it, it deserved it. lol

Interesting that Bailando is not in Top 50 streams. That's the component that is missing for him because sales have been close to Top 20 and airplay is in Top 20. Is it not available on Spotify or people aren't listening?

"Love Me Harder" and "Be My Baby" just dropped out of the top 100.
