Meghan Trainor Tops Hot 100; Tove Lo, Clean Bandit Climb Into Top 10Trainor's 'All About That Bass' leads an all-female top five for a record-tying fourth week. Plus, Tove Lo's 'Habits (Stay High)' and Clean Bandit's 'Rather Be,' featuring Jess Glynne, reach the top 10. It's all about a record-tying achievement on the Billboard Hot 100, where Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" leads an all-female top five for a fourth straight week. The streak equals the longest stretch that women have locked men out of the top five in the chart's 56-year history. Meanwhile, Swedish alterna-pop singer/songwriter Tove Lo and U.K. dance quartet Clean Bandit each reach the Hot 100's top 10 with their first chart entries, "Habits (Stay High)" and "Rather Be" (featuring Jess Glynne), respectively. As we do every Wednesday, when the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 is compiled, let's look at the numbers behind the entire top 10. Beneath "Bass" on the Hot 100, Taylor Swift's former two-week No. 1 "Shake It Off" holds at No. 2 for a fourth week; Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" rebounds 4-3; Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow" (featuring Rita Ora) returns to its best rank (5-4); and Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Minaj's "Bang Bang" drops from its No. 3 highpoint to No. 5. Women, thus, monopolize the top five exclusively for a fourth straight week, matching the chart's longest such streak. The first such run of female dominance occurred more than 15 years ago (Feb. 13-March 6, 1999), when hits by Monica ("Angel of Mine"), Britney Spears ("…Baby One More Time"), Deborah Cox ("Nobody's Supposed to Be Here"), Cher ("Believe"), Brandy ("Have You Ever?"), Whitney Houston ("Heartbreak Hotel," featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price) and Sarah McLachlan ("Angel") combined to keep men out of reach of the top five. This week also marks just the 10th frame in the Hot 100's history in which solo women have locked men out of the region. It's the 11th barring of men including the June 30, 1979, chart, when four soloists (Anita Ward, Donna Summer, with two titles, and Rickie Lee Jones) and the all-female group Sister Sledge pitched such a shutout. Fittingly, given this week's achievement, Trainor sings in her debut Epic Records single, "I got that boom-boom that all the boys chase" (even if she's not quite referring to chart positions). "Bass" rules the Hot 100 fueled by No. 1 ranks on the tally's three main component charts. It leads Radio Songs for a second week with 147 million in all-format audience (up 9 percent), according to Nielsen BDS; Digital Songs for a fifth (2-1) with 253,000 downloads sold (down 10 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan; and Streaming Songs for a fourth week with 14.3 million U.S. streams (down 9 percent). Swift's "Shake" keeps at No. 2 on the Hot 100, adding top Streaming Gainer honors. The cut vaults 21-1 on the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart with a 122 percent leap to 4.3 million following its first full week of availability on Spotify (which accounts for 91 percent of its clicks in the tracking week). The activity helps "Shake" shoot 5-3 on Streaming Songs (1.2 million, up 40 percent). The first single from Swift's fifth studio set, 1989 (due Oct. 27), holds at No. 2 on Radio Songs (140 million, up 10 percent) and Digital Songs (224,000, down 24 percent). As previously reported, "Shake" also makes a record-tying sprint to the top of the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart. With "Bass" down by 5 percent in overall Hot 100 chart points and "Shake" up by 2 percent, the latter makes a modest push to reclaim the top spot, which it held for its first two weeks last month. Minaj's "Anaconda" rebounds 4-3 on the Hot 100 (having reached No. 2). It continues to slither up Radio Songs (30-24; 47 million, up 13 percent); holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (13.9 million, up 10 percent); and dips 6-7 on Digital Songs (89,000, down 13 percent). The track, which samples Sir Mix-A-Lot's five-week 1992 Hot 100 No. 1 "Baby Got Back," tops Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs for a sixth week each. Azalea's "Black Widow" returns to its Hot 100 highpoint (5-4), charging 7-3 on Radio Songs (115 million, up 16 percent) and 8-5 on Streaming Songs (7.1 million, down 10 percent); on Digital Songs, it retreats 4-5 (104,000, down 14 percent). Jessie J, Grande and Minaj's "Bang Bang" drops from its best Hot 100 rank (3-5), although it enters the Radio Songs top 10 (11-7; 91 million, up 12 percent). The collab marks Minaj's 10th Radio Songs top 10, Grande's third and Jessie J's second. It's a non-mover on Digital Songs (No. 3; 125,000, down 13 percent) and Streaming Songs (No. 6; 6.9 million, down 13 percent). Sam Smith's No. 2-peaking "Stay With Me" holds at No. 6 on the Hot 100. As previously reported, the ballad takes over atop the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart. (Meanwhile, follow-up "I'm Not the Only One" bounds 84-63 on the Hot 100.) Tove Lo celebrates her first Hot 100 top 10 on her first try, as "Habits (Stay High)" hurtles 13-7. It concurrently reaches the Streaming Songs top 10 (12-9; 5.7 million, down 1 percent); edges 5-4 on Digital Songs (109,000 up 1 percent); and roars 25-15 on Radio Songs (59 million, up 28 percent). "It's hard for me to talk or sing about it without any filter," Tove Lo says of the breakup that inspired the song (which first reached the U.K. top 10 in May, peaking at No. 6). "At first, I didn't want to write something bad. But, when it was all over, being in that state of mind ... I need to use that when I write. I can't not." "Habits" introduces Tove Lo's debut album, Queen of the Clouds, released yesterday (Sept. 30) and due on next week's Billboard 200 chart. Grande's No. 4 hit "Break Free," featuring Zedd, slides 7-8 on the Hot 100 (and leads Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a seventh week), while Jeremih's "Don't Tell 'Em," featuring YG, lifts 10-9. As with Minaj's "Anaconda," "Tell" also reworks a 1992 smash: Snap's "Rhythm Is a Dancer," which hit No. 5. (What's next, a new version of Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart"? Actually, we've already gotten that this year! Rapper Buck 22 spent a week at No. 80 in March with "Achy Breaky 2," featuring Cyrus.) Rounding out the top 10, Clean Bandit breaks into the top 10, prowling 11-10 with its maiden entry "Rather Be." The cut gains by 5 percent to 87,000 sold (scoring a backwards bullet, 7-8, on Digital Songs); holds at No. 12 on Radio Songs (75 million, down 5 percent); and bumps 16-13 on Streaming Songs (4.4 million, down 8 percent). Like Tove Lo's "Habits," the string-and-beats-infused "Rather Be" first broke in Britain, leading the Official U.K. Singles chart for four weeks beginning in February. "We try not to see boundaries between genres," the act's multi-instrumentalist Jack Patterson says. "We believe you can just do whatever you want." www.billboard.com/articles/news/6266798/hot-100-meghan-trainor-tove-lo-clean-bandit

Interesting how both of Sam Smith's songs are #6 this week And also it seems highly unlikely that Taylor can be #3 on Streaming Songs with just 1.2 million, not to mention having more on-demand streams than total streams (I guess the decimal was a typo and shouldn't have been there for that second one lol

So thrilled to see Rather Be and Habits make it! Not so happy about Black Widow still not having dethroned Anaconda on the two genre charts though. That part is frustrating.

RATHER BE AND HABITS! Took them long enough, but so happy - they are both excellent songs that basically quadrupled the caliber of the top 10 this week. :)

*Finally @ Clean Bandit reaching the friggin top 10..even if just barely! Beyond duh! should've happened many weeks ago and peaked even higher! Def. shouldn't have taken this long. Such a feel good, perfect pop song that simply was a casualty of bad timing (up until this week) due to WAY more inferior songs doing better lol. I had a feeling this week was its best and last shot due to some of those inferior songs I'm thinking of finally nosediving just in time. Still don't understand (what looks like) a dramatic fall in airplay when it's still selling consistently and people love the song. Regardless, whether it peaked at #10 or #6, still top 10!!

Sort of interesting to me that Billboard traces the success of Habits and Rather Be to the UK but makes no mention of their inclusion in iHeartRadio's on the verge program. That obviously played a direct role in putting them on the map here.
(Actually kind of weird that Billboard never really seems to mention it when providing context for big chart moves)

(Actually kind of weird that Billboard never really seems to mention it when providing context for big chart moves) Acutally, it's not. There's never been any true depth beyond "available for streaming," "just released video," "viral video" that's about it. Plus, there's "magic" in the numbers - see last week's strange Sia over Tove Lo even though the raw numbers didn't quite show how a 3-spot difference was possible.

Plus, there's "magic" in the numbers - see last week's strange Sia over Tove Lo even though the raw numbers didn't quite show how a 3-spot difference was possible. The top ten breakdown often provides context for big moves (that heavy dude on the Wrecking Ball = why Miley's song went back to #1, VMAs boosts, Grammy boosts, the Taylor Swift outtakes, etc). I don't see how "every iHeartMedia station was required to play this song" is any less relevant to success than an isolated television appearance. And I specifically referenced it in this case because Billboard made a point to connect the songs by virtue of their status as UK hits (which is a stretch in the case of Habits, as it was the remix that charted - and it wasn't a monster hit), and I feel iHeart is a far more relevant connection when it comes to their runs up the Hot 100. The only time I recall Billboard notably referencing On the Verge, and correct me if I'm wrong, was in the context of "The Big Bang," which is interestingly one of the program's few flops. (And, worst case scenario, treat my post as a rant against Billboard (and Paul Grein) for wasting paragraphs on worthless facts like "The last time a song with the word 'Bass' in the title went to #1.." rather than actual analysis)

The Big Bang was actually a success for the program, just a flop for the song. Without the payola by another name, that song would never have even been heard, and its sales and streaming certainly didn't match the grossly inflated airplay it received.

Chart Watch: Women Tie All-Time RecordFemale artists monopolize the top five spots on the Hot 100 for the fourth straight week. It’s only the second time in pop history (or maybe that should be herstory) that females have owned the top five for four weeks running. The same thing happened in February and March 1999. In both cases, the shut-outs involved an artist’s debut hit— Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” now; Britney Spears' “…Baby One More Time” then. In both cases, they involved an all-female three-way collabo—”Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj now; “Heartbreak Hotel” by Whitney Houston (featuring Faith Evans & Kelly Price) then. "All About That Bass" is #1 for the fourth straight week in its 12th week on the chart. It’s #1 on all three of the main component charts that feed the Hot 100. It leads Radio Songs for a second week, Digital Songs for a fifth week and Streaming Songs for a fourth week. The song sold 253K copies this week. It’s just the third song to top Digital Songs for five or more weeks so far this year. It follows Pharrell Williams's “Happy” (which logged 11 weeks on top) and “Dark Horse” by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J (also five weeks). Taylor Swift's “Shake It Off” holds at #2 for the fourth week in its sixth week on the Hot 100. The song tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week.Nicki Minaj's “Anaconda” rebounds from #4 to #3 in its eighth week. The song peaked at #2. The song, which samples Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1992 classic “Baby Got Back,” holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the sixth week. You may be surprised to learn that “Baby Got Back” wasn't a big R&B hit. The song, which logged five weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, stalled at #27 on the R&B chart, which was then called Hot R&B Singles. (Billboard added Hip-Hop to the chart's name in December 1999.) "Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora rebounds from #5 to #4 in its 13th week. This equals its highest ranking to date. "Bang Bang" drops from #3 to #5 in its ninth week. The song debuts at #1 on The U.K.’s Official Singles Chart. It’s Jessie J’s third #1 in her home country, following "Price Tag" (featuring B.o.B) and “Domino.” It’s Grande’s second #1 in the U.K. so far this year, following “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea). It’s Minaj’s first U.K. #1. (In case you’re wondering, the other songs that ranked in the top five on the Hot 100 in those four weeks in 1999 were Monica's “Angel Of Mine,” Deborah Cox's “Nobody's Supposed To Be Here,” Cher's “Believe,” Brandy's “Have You Ever?” and Sarah McLachlan's “Angel.”) Sam Smith's “Stay With Me” holds at #6 for the fourth week in its 25th week … Tove Lo's “Habits (Stay High)” jumps from #13 to #7 in its 18th week. This is the first Hot 100 hit for the Swedish female artist. The song reached #6 earlier this year on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart, but with two differences. The title was just “Stay High” and Hippie Sabotage had a featured credit. Tove Lo’s debut album, Queen Of The Clouds, is expected to enter The Billboard 200 next week with sales in the 19K range. "Break Free" by Ariana Grande featuring Zedd dips from #7 to #8 in its 13th week. It’s #1 On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a seventh week … “Don’t Tell ‘Em” by Jeremih featuring YG jumps from #10 to #9 in its 14th week. The song samples Snap!'s 1992 hit “Rhythm Is A Dancer.” (In its enthusiastic use of the exclamation point in its name, Snap! may have influenced such current hit-makers as MAGIC!—not to mention such popular websites as Yahoo!) Eight months after hitting #1 in the U.K., “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne finally cracks the top 10 in the U.S. The silky track jumps from #11 to #10 in its 16th week. “Rather Be” is the 10th U.K. #1 of 2014 to crack the top 10 on the Hot 100. Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week: Sia's “Chandelier” and Charli XCX's “Boom Clap.” "Bailando" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song peaked at #12 on the Hot 100. Dierks Bentley's “Drunk On A Plane” tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song reached #27 on the Hot 100. music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-women-tie-all-time-record-203805683.html

It's nice seeing "Rather Be" and "Habits" shaking up the top ten. Both are incredible, and they are two of my favorite hits this year.

The Big Bang was actually a success for the program, just a flop for the song. Without the payola by another name, that song would never have even been heard, and its sales and streaming certainly didn't match the grossly inflated airplay it received. Maybe I'm underestimating how well it held up, but to me, a "success for the program" would be a song that continued to explode even after the guaranteed airplay stopped. Didn't The Big Bang quickly fall once its push ended? I'd thus actually use the reverse to describe it. I'd say it was a success for the song since a mediocre cover of a flop had no business charting at all but a flop for the program since iHeartRadio didn't turn it into a smash.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-good-kid-hit-record-234336024.html Chart Watch: good kid, hit recordBy Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch Kendrick Lamar's “I” is the top new entry on this week's Hot 100 at #39. It's from his third studio album, which is due later this year. The highly-anticipated album is expected to sell around 500K copies in its first week. Lamar's sophomore album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, reached #2 on The Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It spawned three top 40 hits: “Swimming Pools (Drank)” (which cracked the top 20), “Poetic Justice” (featuring Drake) and “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe.” This week’s top Hot 100 news is that female solo artists monopolized the top five for the fourth consecutive week. That was the lead of a Chart Watch blog which we posted earlier today. If you missed it, here’s a link. This blog will deal with key debuts and moves below the top 10. Bobby Shmurda's “Hot Boy” jumps from #16 to #14 in its ninth week … Ed Sheeran lands his third top 20 hit (his second in a row) as “Don’t” jumps from #22 to #17 in its 16th week. Jason Aldean's “Burnin' It Down” rebounds from #21 to #19 in its 10th week. The song has climbed as high as #12. The song tops Hot Country Songs for the 10th week, which is the longest run at #1 by any song so far this year. The last song to spend more weeks at #1 was Luke Bryan's “That's My Kind Of Night,” which spent 12 weeks on top last year. Aldean also has this week's second-highest new entry on the Hot 100, “Tonight Looks Good On You,” which debuts at #53. It's the fifth Hot 100 song from Aldean's sixth studio album, Old Boots, New Dirt, which is due Oct. 7. (It’s expected to sell around 450K copies in its first week.) Florida Georgia Line's “Dirt” rebounds from #28 to #23 in its 12th week. The song peaked at #11. The duo's new song, “Anything Goes,” debuts at #76. It's the title track from the duo's sophomore album, which is due Oct. 14. The album is expected to sell about 350K copies in its first week, which should enable it to debut at #1. In case you're wondering, “Anything Goes” isn't the Cole Porter classic, which Ethel Merman introduced in the 1934 Broadway musical of the same name (and which Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga sing on this week’s #1 album). 5 Seconds Of Summer's “Amnesia” leaps from #37 to #24 in its 13th week. The song has climbed as high as #16 … Jason Derulo's “Trumpets” jumps from #33 to #27 in its 18th week … Maroon 5's “Animals” leaps from #51 to #33 in its sixth week. Mr. Probz's “Waves” jumps from #52 to #43 in its sixth week. The song spent two weeks at #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart in May … Nick Jonas's “Jealous” leaps from #80 to #58 in its third week … Sam Smith's “I'm Not The Only One” leaps from #84 to #63 in its fourth week … “Touchin, Lovin” by Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj jumps from #74 to #65 in its fourth week … Keith Urban's “Somewhere In My Car” jumps from #82 to #66 in its fifth week. "I Don’t F**k With You" by Big Sean featuring E-40 is the week’s third-highest new entry at #70. It’s Big Sean’s ninth Hot 100 song as a lead artist … Rae Sremmurd's “No Type” debuts at #77. It's the hip-hop duo's second Hot 100 single, following “No Flex Zone!,” which reached #36. (Rae Sremmurd is Ear Drummers spelled backwards.) The Script's “Superheroes” jumps from #88 to #80 in its second week. It's from the group's No Sound Without Silence, which is expected to crack the top 10 on The Billboard 200 next week, with sales in the 24K range … Big & Rich's “Look At You” jumps from #92 to #84 in its fourth week. The duo has been turning out country hits since 2003's “Wild West Show” … The Swon Brothers's “Later On” jumps from #94 to #86 in its seventh week. "Tuesday" by ILoveMakonnen featuring Drake debuts at #90. The song is also known as “Club Goin’ Up On A Tuesday.” Miley Cyrus had a hand in signing the artist … Migos's “Handsome And Wealthy” debuts at #92. It's the second chart hit from the hip-hop trio's mixtape No Label 2. The first was “Fight Night,” which reached #69. Scotty McCreery's “Feelin' It” debuts at #96. It's the second Hot 100 song from his sophomore album, See You Tonight … Parmalee's “Close Your Eyes” debuts at #98. It's the second Hot 100 song from country band's fourth studio album, Feels Like Carolina. The first, “Carolina,” reached #36 … alt-J's “Left Hand Free” debuts at #99. It's from the English rock band's sophomore album, This Is All Yours, which enters The Billboard 200 at #4 this week.

What am I missing regarding Hot Boy/N*gga? It's only #35 or so on iTunes, Top 10 on urban and Top 30 on rhythmic. Streaming is solid but doesn't look insane. How is this song #14? I feel like there's a piece of the puzzle I'm not seeing.

I feel like there's a piece of the puzzle I'm not seeing. #4 streaming In that case, what am I missing regarding its streaming? There appear to be two videos - one on Vevo and some independent one - but they only have a collective 37 million views (great number but not monstrous for several months of availability). It's not a top song on Spotify. Is there some parody of which I'm unaware?
