While I initially thought a AATB win seemed fishy, I didn't appreciate just how close they were from a digital sales standpoint. It seemed like Shake it Off held a *bigger* lead this week on iTunes, so I'm stunned the margin was only 2K.

They're probably rating streams a bit too high, but the actual breakdown is far less flattering for Shake it Off than I thought it would be.

I agree with you about Tove Lo, Iggy and Jessie but I honestly don't feel like Animals will make it. I definitely can see it peaking higher than Maps but I think it could be a SWM situation where it tops digital songs much sooner than airplay and the video's buzz is already wearing out. I have a feeling that the next #1 (after SIO) is something that hasn't debuted yet and will surprise us with an incredible start and hit #1. I could be wrong though about Animals. Or perhaps Trumpets could be #1 although I'm doubting that as well.

Yeah, I'm not sure if Animals can do it either. I think its best shot is if it just happens to hold on while AATB/SIO are falling.

So Billboard might have helped us a little bit as far as the calculation goes.

It says that the 6 million streams for "Ew!" = 77% of the song's chart points.

I can't imagine it got more than negligible amounts of airplay, which means the other 23% of chart points come from the 35,000 first week sales.

35K = .23((6,000,000/.77)) = 1.79 million streams

Approximately 51.1 streams = 1 sale.

Obviously, there'd be some room for error based on radio/on-demand plays, plus Billboard's rounding, but that should be pretty close. Let me know if I messed up.

Naw. Last week's day to day digital gap was never "big" between the two, for anyone who followed it closely (evidenced by them continually swapping places). This week however, yeah, substantial. Next week's chart will reflect that.

Swift is #2 even though she is #1 at radio, #1 in sales, #1 in on-demand. It's hard to believe a difference of just two million streams makes up the difference for all those #1's and pushes a song into the top position.

"just two million streams" makes up for just 2k in sales and 3 million AI. No numbers for AATB on demand.

The difference between the 2 in sales and AI was very small, so a relatively large streaming difference would push it in Meghan's favor.

I'm of the opinion they should do away with the inclusion of music videos as a component in the calculation of the Hot 100 (audio streaming via Youtube is perfectly fine tho). Prolly in the minority though.

Getting annoying seeing only females in the top five and no males even though I love all of those female songs (well except Anaconda).

Another week, another top five on the Billboard Hot 100 consisting entirely of women, as Meghan Trainor's Epic Records single "All About That Bass" leads an all-female top five for a record-extending sixth straight week. The run furthers the mark for the most weeks in a row that women have locked men out of the top five in the chart's 56-year history.

Joining the elite club is Swedish pop singer/songwriter Tove Lo, whose debut hit "Habits (Stay High)" rises 6-4.

Meanwhile, rap rookie Bobby Shmurda reaches the top 10 with his viral video-fueled "Hot Boy."

As we do each Wednesday, when the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 is compiled, let's look at the numbers behind the top 10 and more.

Beneath "Bass," Taylor Swift's former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Shake It Off" ranks at No. 2 for a sixth week; Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow" (featuring Rita Ora) holds at its highpoint (3-3), while leading Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Songs for a second week each; and, beneath "Habits," Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang" backtracks 4-5.

Minaj's "Anaconda" drops 5-8 after seven weeks in the top five. It reached No. 2 (marking her best Hot 100 rank).

Women, thus, account for the Hot 100's top five exclusively for a sixth straight week. The run distances that of a four-week stretch in 1999 (Feb. 13-March 6), when songs by Monica, Britney Spears, Deborah Cox, Cher, Brandy, Whitney Houston (featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price) and Sarah McLachlan combined to keep men out of the bracket. This week marks just the 12th week in the Hot 100's history in which solo women have excluded men from the top five.

"Bass" rules the Hot 100 thanks in part to its No. 1 rank on Streaming Songs for a sixth week, logging 13.4 million U.S. streams (down 3 percent), according to Nielsen BDS. It slips to No. 2 after six weeks atop Digital Songs (169,000 downloads sold, down 17 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and to No. 2 on Radio Songs after three weeks at No. 1 with 146 million in all-format audience (down 1 percent).

As Swift's "Shake" ranks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a sixth week (after spending its first two frames at No. 1), the track crowns Radio Songs with a 2-1 jump (149 million, up 3 percent). Swift scores her third Radio Songs No. 1: "You Belong With Me" led for two weeks in 2009 and "I Knew You Were Trouble." topped the tally for four weeks in February/March 2013. As previously reported, "Shake" also reaches No. 1 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart and leads Adult Pop Songs for a third frame.

"Shake" rebounds 2-1 for a fourth week atop Digital Songs (171,000, down 10 percent); rules the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart for a third week (4 million, down 3 percent); and holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (11.3 million, down 3 percent), its peak rank

Holding at No. 3 on the Hot 100, Azalea's "Black Widow" keeps at No. 3 on Radio Songs (127 million, up 5 percent); slips 7-8 on Digital Songs (77,000, down 13 percent); and falls 7-9 on Streaming Songs (5.9 million, down 10 percent).

Tove Lo's "Habits" rises 6-4 on the Hot 100 with across-the-board gains: it roars 8-4 on Digital Songs (99,000, up 12 percent); 6-5 on Streaming Songs (7.2 million, up 7 percent); and 10-7 on Radio Songs (90 million, up 16 percent).

Below "Bang Bang" at No. 5 on the Hot 100, Jeremih edges 7-6 with "Don't Tell 'Em" (featuring YG) (and is the top Hot 100 hit by a male artist for a second week!) The track bullets for a third week at its No. 4 high on Radio Songs (118 million, up 3 percent) and returns to the Digital Songs top 10 (11-10; 74,000, down 2 percent).

Maroon 5's "Animals" lifts 8-7 on the Hot 100 as the chart's top Airplay Gainer. On Radio Songs, it flies 33-20, up by 34 percent to 49 million in audience. "Animals" ascends 5-3 on Digital Songs (114,000, down 1 percent) and drops 9-10 on Streaming Songs (5 million, down 16 percent). Last week, the song was fueled by the Sept. 29 premiere of its video and Maroon 5's performance of it on NBC's Saturday Night Live (Oct. 4).

Minaj's "Anaconda" (5-8) and Sam Smith's fellow No. 2 hit "Stay With Me" (9-9) rank above top 10 newcomer Bobby Shmurda, whose "Hot Boy" bumps 12-10 for his first Hot 100 top 10 (in his first chart visit). Powered heavily by the song's accompanying "Shmoney Dance" (click here for helpful step-by-step instructions), the cut from the Brooklyn rapper, who first gained fans on Vine, climbs 4-3 on Streaming Songs (8.5 million, down 2 percent). It rises 25-20 on Digital Songs (50,000, up 5 percent) and nears Radio Songs with an 11 percent gain to 25 million.

While "Hot Boy" bullets at No. 8 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with 18 million in format audience (up 3 percent), it's still a fair distance away from the Pop Songs airplay chart. The last rap song to reach the Hot 100's top 10 but not appear on Pop Songs (i.e., meaning it rose to the top 10 despite a lack of significant pop play)? Eminem's "Rap God," which debuted at No. 7 on Nov. 2, 2013, with nearly all its chart points from sales; it bowed atop Digital Songs that week with 270,000 downloads sold as a preview track from Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

Three other non-rap songs have since hit the Hot 100's top 10 without appearing on Pop Songs, thanks largely to combinations of sales and streaming, including Idina Menzel's Frozen theme "Let It Go," which heated up to a No. 5 peak in April.

nah quite a few people (including myself) agree with you on that. I also don't think that the videos actually intend for people to listen to the song in it. It tends to be about something viral or appealing to people in terms of visual, not about the music (as was the case with the Wrecking Ball video). But I guess this is just the way it is for now and we have to accept it.

Rather than look at raw #s, I think it becomes more clear how Meghan Trainor won the week if you compare % leads.

Sales: Taylor leads by 1.7%
Airplay: Taylor leads by 2.0%
Streaming: Meghan leads by 15.7%

The streaming gap was fairly big, the other two elements were virtual ties. If the values of each element were weighted equally (I know they're not), it would be a 4% lead for Meghan.

I wouldn't be surprised if SIO does retake #1 next week. If they both stabilize, we could see several weeks of back-and-forth trade-off at #1 like J.Lo/Alicia Keys back in 2001 with "I'm Real" and "Fallin'." Basically they are practically tied as the top 2 songs in the country right now, with a wide margin above the rest.

I'm guessing some of the other songs (based on what the article mentioned) that made top ten on the Hot 100 without making the Mainstream Top 40 chart were Gentleman and The Fox? Interesting, five such songs in just two years (including the ones mentioned in the article)...oh and why were they considered "non-rap" I mean if Gentleman was on the Rap Songs chart then obviously Billboard does consider it to be rap so by default they should include it.

Chart Watch: Meghan vs. Taylor

Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” and Taylor Swift's “Shake It Off” hold at #1 and #2, respectively, on the Hot 100 for the sixth straight week, even though Swift's smash bumps Trainor's song out of the top spot on both Radio Songs and Digital Songs (two of the component charts that feed the Hot 100). How can that be? “All About That Bass” has a lead in streaming activity—it's #1 on Streaming Songs for the sixth week—that puts it narrowly ahead on the composite Hot 100 chart.

By holding at #2 on the Hot 100 for the sixth week,”Shake It Off” equals Mariah Carey's stay in the runner-up spot with a 2005 hit of the same title. The difference is that that was the peak for Carey's hit, whereas Swift's song had two weeks at #1 prior to its long run at #2.

"Shake If Off" moves up to #1 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart. It’s Swift’s third #1 on that chart, following "You Belong With Me" (which logged two weeks on top in 2009) and "I Knew You Were Trouble." (four weeks in 2013). ("You Belong With Me" also reached #1 on Hot Country Songs, but these two subsequent, pop-oriented smashes didn’t crack the country chart.)

"Shake It Off" regains the #1 spot on Hot Digital Songs. This is its fourth week on top.

By way of comparison, “All About That Bass” has logged six weeks on top. (Trainor’s song has also sold more copies—2,905,000 to 2,367,000 for Swift’s hit.) “Shake It Off” sold 171K copies this week, which is the lowest tally for a song at #1 since Rihanna's “Diamonds” sold the same tally in its only week at #1 on the digital chart in November 2012.

Trainor and Swift contribute to female artists’ record-extending achievement on the Hot 100. Women have a lock on the top five for the sixth consecutive week.

"Black Widow" by Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora holds at #3 for the second week in its 15th week on the chart. It’s #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the second week.

Tove Lo's “Habits (Stay High)” jumps from #6 to #4 in its 20th week.

"Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj dips from #4 to #5 its 11th week. The song has climbed as high as #3.

"Don’t Tell ‘Em" by Jeremih featuring YG jumps from #7 to #6 in its 16th week. It’s the highest-ranking song by a male artist or group for the second week in a row.

Maroon 5's “Animals” jumps from #8 to #7 in its eighth week.

Nicki Minaj's “Anaconda” drops from #5 to #8 in its 10th week. The song peaked at #2.

Sam Smith's “Stay With Me” holds at #9 for the second week in its 27th week. The song—a Grammy front-runner for Record and Song of the Year—peaked at #2.

Bobby Shmurda's “Hot Boy” jumps from #12 to #10 in its 11th week. Billboard's Gary Trust reports that it's the first rap song to reach the top 10 on the Hot 100 without appearing on the Pop Songs chart since Eminem's “Rap God” in late 2013.

"Break Free" by Ariana Grande featuring Zedd drops out of the top 10 this week.

"Ew!" by Jimmy Fallon featuring will.i.am is the top new entry on the Hot 100 at #26, ahead of Florida Georgia Line's “Sippin' On Fire,” Avicii's “Days” and Ed Sheeran's “Thinking Out Loud.” I took a look at the song in a separate blog that we posted today. If you missed it, here's a link.

"Talk Dirty" by Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz tops the 4 million mark in U.S. sales this week. The song reached #3 on the Hot 100.
