It's already getting airplay on some radio stations in my country. Great single choice.

Would have preferred Bloodstream (already nearing my top 40), but this works as well.

Another sappy ballad? No thanks. He's about to be as pigeonholed as Sam Smith.

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! Absolutely the right choice!
Have been here for this since the album came out. This is probably my favorite era since Teenage Dream. Maybe this could possibly hit #1?
It's such a beautiful song. Lyrically, it's among his very best and a stunning example of how he's progressed from +. The organ march that comes in halfway through gives the song an ethereal feel that could be taken to be a wedding or something more funereal.
And it's ok that this is following TOL, he proved his diversity more than enough with the first 2 singles.

Another sappy ballad? No thanks. He's about to be as pigeonholed as Sam Smith. Hey they are friends, they love each other's ballads. In Ed's case his ballad became his biggest hit by far, so not surprising he gives another try (on Sam's case, hopefully the next single will be uptempo, it has to be uptempo, there's no other option even if his album is full of ballads) The truth is i like the song way more than Bloodstream, but it's true that it could suffer a Lay me down syndrome. Thinking out loud was so massive that maybe something more uptempo would be a better option (and given x is selling well there would no reason to not release a ballad as fifth single)

I'm fine with this as a single, but I don't think I'm fine with it as the single to follow Thinking Out Loud. Afire Love or Nina would be great follow-ups. Possibly even Runaway. Those are the most similar to Don't, in my opinion. I don't know a single person who isn't a fan of Don't, and most of them I know seem to like that style of Ed better than "The A Team"/"Thinking Out Loud" style Ed.

My guess is this is the European single and the US will get the Rudimental remix of "Bloodstream". This one was one of the few that I liked from the album, but I don't know if it's the best choice for a single. But hey, if "Thinking Out Loud" was as successful as it was, why not this?

There are more probabilities that it will exactly the opposite. Bloodstream is the UK's single, so probably will be the european one too

I don't think Ed releasing two ballads in a row would be the same as Sam doing two in a row. People are more familiar with Ed and know he has other stuff whereas Sam hasn't had enough released material to leave people with that impression so Sam is mostly painting himself as a one-trick-pony whereas Ed is responding to what has become a strong point for him and that is these ballads. Plus, I think he's said Photograph is his favourite on the new album and I'd say it's one of the strongest as well. I think it's a chance he can afford to take, though the next single should be a or mid-to-uptempo.

Yasss!!! Finally! I assume he will perform this in BBMA, which is great!
I don't get why all the negative response for two ballads in a row. I mean, Ed already have two upbeat singles (Sing, Don't), make sense to release two ballads as well. Start complaining if One is released as single #5 (Which ideally would either be Nina or I'm A Mess, maybe Bloodstream)

I haven't been so disappointed with a male act in a long time. I immediately fell in love with his debut, but all that excitement I've had for him is gone now. Yawn.

I was referring more so to those who weren't really fans of Ed, though, most of them seemed to have liked the Don't/Sing style Ed rather than his ballads. However, I think mike is correct, also. I don't think the fact that he's releasing two ballads in a row is much of a problem. I'm just sorta upset he hasn't released Afire Love yet. I think that could definitely hit top 15 on the Hot 100 and top 10 on CHR.

Both of his "+" era CHR hits were ballads (as was his feature on a Taylor Swift hit), so this isn't a great departure. "Sing" was considered surprising at first.
This should work fine given its quality and his momentum, though he might want to vary it up for the fifth single. Since Sam Smith was mentioned, he could stand to change things up, though if you count his Naughty Boy and Disclosure features he has had more uptempo (or at least midtempo) hits.

I agree, and the fact that Lay me down didn't flopped hard is only due to Sam being in those kind of moments singers have from time to time when they can release almost anything, but it's obvious the label made a big mistake (curiously he doesn't have that problem in UK at all, because 2 of the 5 singles are uptempo), and he is lucky that he can solve this with the next single (unless they release Leave your lover, who is a great song but obviously not the best one to release after 3 ballads). Ed only released a ballad previously to TOL, and the A team is a very different kind of song. Maybe the order is not the better, but i think whith all the good buzz he has after thinking out loud he won't have a problem to have a hit with this

I just need "Afire Love" to be a single at some point. I also wish that it will be a single, but I think Ed had said that he won't make it a single because it's a very personal song for him

The album is amazing. Haters to the left.

I like the song and he is so big right now that i'm pretty sure any of his songs could become a hit, but this is not Thinking out loud (that song was simply inevitable)

Ed seemed to hint the video will be coming out on May 5th.
This should be another huge hit for him. Nina should be released next.
