While I think the song is not 'bad', I def get 'why' BB is getting these insane #s. Taylor and her name brand are positively at their zenith now. Even if she puts out a so so song, she's by far the hottest singer in the world (not just a local/US thing). This is a *fourth single yet is almost acting like a first single. The 'remix' factor didn't add much to the actual song but added enough extra hype to make it this smash. Only someone as scorching hot as her could have this kind of thing happen. If it was from just about anyone else, beyond logical it wouldn't be getting anywhere close to these updates.
Absolutely no doubt she's sticking a fork in the already super tired SYA lol. While I want a song to beat a 19 year old record (and wish UF did it) I just never thought SYA was anywhere in the ballpark of being the one that's worth it/good enough to do it. While the song is not bad, I think most know it was a classic case of stellar timing vs. the song itself being this game changing, unique sensation.
The songs w/in the last 5 yrs that came 'this' close were all upbeat, fun retro sounding and worthy of breaking records. SYA is a song mainly based on hype and exploiting someones death (whatever the intentions were). If it didn't coincide with the movie (which obviously created the frenzy/success) it was hit worthy but I don't think a #1 song. Was out for months yet didn't explode until the movie. They *obviously knew what they were doing. But when a song zooms up as quickly as it did then starts to fall like a rock (worldwide), beyond the movie, you just have a flash in the pan/forgettable song w/in the next 6 months. Most of all- it's basically summer and SYA is SO not what people wanna hear in the summer. As much as I'm still baffled by its success, I think (as of now) 'song of the summer' is def. gonna be Cheerleader and even Bad Blood. Though I think Cheerleader will have a much better shot after the hype for BB dies down.
