I like this and feel like this is the direction she should be heading to. After all, it's the dark, mysterious scents of her debut took her to where she's at right now. It does work.
"Ride of Your Life" is still the high light.

100% get the impulse of signing a deal and aiming for the top, but this girl never needed to go major. She had the buzz and she kills it from the writing to the stage almost every time. She would have benefitted so much from coming out as the R&B Chance instead of going the traditional way and selling herself as, like, the new Mya.

Nightride is dope. I'm a bit bothered by how it went from being a true mixtape to an iTunes release at the last minute...something about it gives a whiff of more label discord/butting heads.

It was probably a last minute decision made by the label On the brisghtside she brought her A game to another mixtape, it's so damn dark but lovely and overall super cohesive none of it felt out of place. |

But release the video for "Nightride" and it's not even on the mixtape...?
I made sure she got my coins from iTunes, I figure she could use any sales she gets with this thing. I'm disappointed in how the tracks are arranged on the tracklist though. In my opinion, the first 5 tracks are very samey. While they retain that bedroom mixtape flair that made people fall in love with her, they cause songs that have that studio "sheen" and "umph" like "Sacrifices", "Company", "Party Favors", "Ride Of Your Life", and "Touch Pass" to stick out like a sore thumb.
I retooled the track list on my phone and added in a few other leaked tracks from this era like "Energy" and "Joyride" to crank things up a bit:

This album quenched my thirst from her until we get Joyride next year. If the later album is lighter and more upbeat I hope a deluxe will package this with it.

I mean, she is essentially the female Weeknd and that's what she should have been marketed as. It's not too late I suppose, but she'll need a really big single to take off. Maybe a song on a soundtrack to a huge movie like "Earned It" on 50 Shades. |
