I still think Can't Feel My Face will be #1 this week. Sure it may have a smaller lead than it would have if not for the glitch but I highly doubt that it had enough of an impact to prevent it from having more points this week than Cheerleader/Drag Me Down. Plus I'm pretty sure this tracking week (7/31 - 8/6) for streaming was the one for the debut of the video so it should see a sizable streaming gain. It's also getting consistent dark greens on iTunes pop bars right now and has combined Cheerleader at 85% and is still ahead of it in airplay of course.

Wiz Khalifa's smash has led Billboard's Songs of the Summer chart through the first 10 weeks of the season. But can OMI's debut finish at No. 1?
Never mind back-to-school sales. Displays in stores are already up for Halloween (or, depending on the early levels of holly-jolliness in your specific locale, Christmas). So, here's some food for thought as you buy candy corns (or candy canes): what hit will win the race for Billboard's No. 1 song of the summer of 2015? So far, through the first 10 weeks since our annual Songs of the Summer chart returned after Memorial Day, Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again," featuring Charlie Puth, has led the list each week. With five more weeks of tabulation to go, we're two-thirds of the way through the Songs of the Summer tracking period. As a reminder, the 20-position Songs of the Summer running tally (up from 10 in previous years) tracks the most popular titles based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At the end of the season, the top song of the summer is crowned. Below "Again" on Songs of the Summer, Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood," featuring Kendrick Lamar, ranks at No. 2, having held the runner-up spot behind "Again" each week this summer. It's the song at No. 3 on the Songs of the Summer chart, however, that could have the best chance of dethroning "Again" as the season's top title. OMI's "Cheerleader" has climbed from No. 16 on the season's first tally thanks to its ascent to No. 1 on the Hot 100 dated July 25, replacing "Again" after 12 weeks at No. 1 (beginning April 25). For now, "Again" boasts a fairly comfortable lead in overall Songs of the Summer chart points over "Blood" and "Cheerleader," but, in recent weeks, "Again" and "Blood" have been tallying similar points totals on the Hot 100, leaving Swift's former Hot 100 No. 1 unlikely to catch Khalifa's on Songs of the Summer. More key to this year's top honoree: with "Cheerleader" at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for four weeks running and "Again" at No. 5 and descending, the breakthrough hit from OMI (born Omar Samuel Pasley) should make the race close for the winner on Songs of the Summer over the next five weeks. Rounding out the Songs of the Summer's top five, Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen" ranks at No. 4, followed by Walk the Moon's "Shut Up and Dance" at No. 5. What will ultimately wind up as the hottest season's hottest song? Keep checking out the Songs of the Summer chart, week-by-week, on Billboard.com. Predictions 1. Cheerleader 2. See You Again 3. Bad Blood 4-5 Can't Feel My Face 4-5 Trap Queen 6. Watch Me 7. Shut Up + Dance 8. Lean On 9. Fight Song 10-11 Uptown Funk 10-13 Honey, I'm Good 11-13 Where Are U Now 11-13 Hey Mama 14-16 Want To Want Me 14-16 Worth It 14-16 The Hills 17-18 Earned It 17-19 Post to be 18-19 Sugar 20. Good For You

Has a rapper ever had 3 songs in the top 10 at the same time? Because Fetty is very much on his way to it happening.

Updated Predictions
Using sales/12 + airplay/10000 + streams/900:
"Can't Feel My Face": 149k/12 + 147M/10000 + 16.5M/900 = 45450
"Cheerleader": 130k/12 + 144M/10000 + 15.3M/900 = 42233
"Drag Me Down": 343k/12 + 28M/10000 + 6.0M/900 = 38050
"Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)": 95k/12 + 54M/10000 + 18.0M/900 = 33317
(Obviously the sales estimates are kworb)
(I recalculated the radio change by measuring the change so far, accounting for the remaining days, then applying that change to the numbers for official Billboard Radio)
(Credit to Mark G. for streaming predictions because I don't know squat about those)
I'd say we have a very good chance for Can't Feel My Face to lead, especially if it does in fact beat Cheerleader in streaming!

With how big the U.S. is, 70,000 copies for the #10 selling song isn't that much at all. Guess I haven't been paying attention to sales lately. With how big the U.S. is, 350k copies for the #1 selling song isn't that much at all. What does it represent? 0.1% of the population? Maybe such small sales shouldn't have such a big relevance on popularity charts.

There are many factors you have to think of when looking at this figure: how many people like music, how many people like pop music, how many people like this specific song, how many people plan on buying this song legally, how many people plan on buying this song this week on this service, etc.

Streaming, especially, has proven that people still consume music - it's just in a different way. And considering prior to iTunes and the downfall of the singles market (by labels) in the 1990s, I doubt many singles were selling 350K in a week. Just look at the certifications prior to iTunes. 2x platinum with rare exception defined massive hit. Now, look how many singles are certified at 2x - 7x.

350,000 may be 0.1% of the population or something like that, but it represents a much bigger portion of the music buying population. I would guess many more people than not, do not download songs from iTunes regularly

Similarly different people possess so varieties interests.. There's about 10 millions of songs downloaded per week I guess (anyone has statistics for that?), which makes almost 5 percent of the whole population. I would assume that if every single soul does download songs and does that legally, then the average frequency they do that per person is like 20 weeks per song or less than that..

You start with a population of 350 million.
In that 350 million, you have to split out those that listen to music regularly from those that don't
Now you take the population that listens to music regularly and you split out those that buy music from those that don't
Now in the population of people that buy music, you have to split out those that will buy pop music from those that don't
From the population that buys pop music, you separate out those that care about up to the minute current hits from those that will buy pop music on a casual basis.
Now your 0.1% becomes a much bigger number

Paying for music is like teaching kids to use complicated math equations in real life.
Why bother?

I just think very few people actually bother to download music, much less legally. Now your 0.1% becomes a much bigger number I can see that when you apply all those filters, 0.1% becomes a much bigger number. But after such filtering and specifying, does 0.1% still reflect what's popular in the country among the whole population that listened to music during that week?

What about those whose passion is reading or playing video games? They may not listen to music regularly.
Is 0.1% the right number? No. In addition to those who do not listen to music regularly, there are those, that do not listen to music at all during a seven day period. I think it is a bad assumption to say everyone alive listens to music during a seven day period.
What is the number? Don't know? As I stated above, when you look at those buying pop music, it is much higher

Well, I certainly don't have that number, and I'm not sure who'd have it, but I do believe that most Americans listen to more than a couple of songs during a seven day period. It depends on what you call "regularly". A lot of people listen to music while driving to work. A lot of people listen to music while watching The Voice. Or watching a viral video someone from work sent them. A lot of people listen to music while eating at McDonald's. I believe that's how most Americans (and not just teenagers) usually listen to music. And yet, Drag me Down will be considered one of the 3 most popular songs of the week because a group of young girls (who represent a very small portion of US total population) bought the song during its first week.
This has certainly happened many times before, and I know that's how the Hot 100 formula works, but I still find it a little odd.

I don't think sales is a good standard for popularity. I'm actually very happy when Billboard added Youtube views to the equation since IMO Radio and Streaming is a better standard for popularity. Not to mention illegal downloads, for all we know, Madonna songs might be downloaded over 5 million times this week while Cheerleader only get 2 million download. Who knows?

I don't think sales measures popularity well, just based off the fact that I've never legally downloaded a song in real life, and 99% of the people I know haven't either. My parents actually bought music. I also had a friend in college who used iTunes a lot, but he was the kind of guy who was scared to break any rules in life (always did his homework, never skipped a lesson, would never try drugs, etc.) He was also very rich, if he was as poor as everybody else he probably wouldn't have used it lol. I know a few people who bought albums when I was younger though.
Another example of someone I know who legally downloaded that I remember was a few years ago when I started university, someone mentioned downloading a song off iTunes and some of the other people in the room laughed at him, and one person said something like "Why would you do that?", as if buying a song was the most ridiculous thing you could do. I think that's the general attitude people have had to buying music in the past 10 years at least. I can't speak for before that because I was too young, but I heard Napster used to be a big thing back in the day.

It's always odd when a song goes to #1 on the Hot 100 on its first week of sales and then drops drastically on its second week. Was it really less popular on its second week than on its first? It was likely getting more airplay and views on its second week than on its first, and it was most likely heard by a bigger number of people. But just because sales diminished (as the rabid fans had already bought it), the Hot 100 formula understands the song is not as popular anymore.

I always buy music from iTunes and I indeed don't know anyone either that's obsessed to iTunes Store like this, spotify may be a widely favored choice, and I am not sure about the rampancy of online piracy.. but I assume it won't be high in the states like 99%

Wait...did we just go from saying "only young girls downloaded 'Drag Me Down' so it shouldn't be so high on the Hot 100" to "only old people buy music legally so sales shouldn't count as much"? The whole "X component should be weighted less" argument comes up every so often, but I'm honestly surprised to see it directed at sales. Streaming comes under fire when videos help a song rocket up the chart, but people believe the song itself had little/nothing to do with that video's popularity. Airplay comes under fire because it's the one over which consumers have the least direct control - you can choose to change the station, but you can't choose what song you hear next (occasional caller requests aside, and even then they won't play just anything you want.) Not to mention most official Top Songs charts around the world don't incorporate airplay at all.
