My thoughts on the nominations
- Overall very pleased with the outcome. FGL and Jason getting minimal noms is a good thing. - REALLY shocked Blake's album wasn't nominated, it was his best since before he got super popular. Very wow at Kenny's album being nominated, short at 11 tracks, but still a good listen. - VERY pleased with the Chris Stapleton and Kacey Musgraves love. I really, really do think Chris deserves the album win. Jason's album was a step down from Night Train (IMO his best album), LBT's was a little strange aside from the 3 singles (which were super obvious after first listen), Kenny's album was good but not what I would consider AOTY material, he just consistently puts out good music. And honestly, as I've mentioned, Kacey's album hasn't held up for me. But I would not be mad at all if she won, it would be a win for the traditional crowd. - I really do hope Dierks wins Male Vocalist, he deserves it. - Disappointed Tim didnt get any love, especially for Album, or Vocal Event, or Single/Song. - I have no idea why "I Don't Dance" or "American Kids" got nominated. They were both last years songs. I think there were other songs that deserved the nom instead. But who are we kidding, "Girl Crush" will sweep those categories. - EOTY will be between Luke, Garth and Eric. - And for those shocked at no Sam Hunt (thank God), I applaud the CMA. I knew he was a lock for New Artist and for "Take Your Time". But C'mon, its the COUNTRY music awards. Giving his album an AOTY nom would have been a slap in the face to any fan. And for Male Vocalist?? C'mon, one has to SING to get that nomination, not rap, or beatbox or whatever the hell he does . The CMA's got it right for once. - Love the Randy Houser nomination for LAC, I think his next album should get him Male Vocalist nom next year.
I predict next year will be year of Luke (Album, maybe Single/Song etc)

Pleasantly surprised to see Chris Stapleton pick up a Male Vocalist nod. I fully expected Traveller to get an Album of the Year nomination, but MV is pretty much the toughest category to score a nomination in (other than Entertainer). I mean, Stapleton beat out huge A-listers like Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, and Jason Aldean, and he also got in over the white hot Sam Hunt. So yeah, I am quite surprised there, even when you consider the acclaim that Stapleton has. It's just really disappointing that so many people don't know about artists like Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, Ashley Monroe, etc. We're now seeing Stapleton and Isbell release singles to AAA radio because "country" radio won't play them :( Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad that there are some stations that have decided to support those artists and their music -- but it really is a huge shame that they can't get any airplay on country radio. "American Kids" was not, but "I Don't Dance" was nominated in Song last year. Perhaps it will be taken out as a nominee? How does the CMAs not catch stuff like that? This isn't the first time this has happened, folks, nor will it be the last. I'm not exactly sure how it works but there are cases where a song can be nominated for Song of the Year one year, and then for Single of the Year the next year. Apparently everybody but me has a short memory span (I'm teasing, but here's what I'm talking about -- from just 2-3 years ago): 46th CMA Awards -- Single of the Year winner was "Pontoon" by Little Big Town ( link) 47th CMA Awards...oh!! Look what song was nominated for Song of the Year ( link) ** Anyway, probably the biggest surprise for me is the lack of an album nomination for Sam Hunt's Montevallo (I'm shocked that Kenny got in there). Sam has continually dominated the sales charts, whereas Kenny's album hasn't gone Gold yet, and Jason doesn't have near the momentum that Sam has. It's true that Old Boots, New Dirt has out-sold Montevallo (just over 1 mil for Jason, just over 700k for Sam), but in the end Sam will probably out-sell Jason. Really the only reason that Jason's has sold more so far is because he's a bigger name, and so his first week sales are really the difference between his total sales and Sam's total sales. I'm also surprised (but in a good way) that Dierks was able to pull off a MV nomination. Again...look at who was left out (Keith, Tim, Jason, etc.) Lots of big names compete for those nominations and I wasn't thinking Dierks would be able to get in, but I'm really glad he did. Also, I'm once again surprised that Tim McGraw didn't get any nominations. Seems like this has been the case the last few years. I don't know if it's that Big Machine doesn't push very hard (this seems unlikely) or if he just doesn't have all the right "connections"? He's been on a roll and has really reignited his career, and yet...nothing for "Shotgun Rider" and nothing for "Diamond Rings & Old Barstools". I thought "Diamond Rings & Old Basrtools" would have for sure gotten a nomination in the Musical Event category, and I thought "Shotgun Rider" would have been nominated for Single or maybe Song. Finally, I also expected ZBB to pick up a nomination (either Single or Song) for "Homegrown", so I'm surprised there as well. I too am shocked at Stapleton for MV. But honestly, alot of people think it's just gender appropriate Entertainer fields, or "the most popular guy" and the "most popular girl". As I've lamented for years now, the word VOCALIST is key. To me, Stapleton is a much better vocalist than Urban or McGraw, or Chesney. The guy can sing folks. I hear a little Ray Charles, a little Travis Tritt and just pure soul. In my book, these should be the same every year until someone new comes along with a better voice LOL i.e. David Nail, Randy Houser, Joe Nichols, Ronnie Dunn etc etc.

Why have they not fixed whatever loophole allows that kind of thing to happen?

Lol at Lee Ann Womack getting a nomination for Female Vocalist over Reba... Reba has had a bigger year than LAW even with her new music only being played on 1/3 of the country stations! I am still happy to see LAW getting some love for her critically acclaimed music, I just thought the token veteran slot would for sure go to Reba.
However, both artists offer a completely different output, so it is interesting to compare them. Lee Ann is a traditionalist, who has never really conformed to modern trends. Reba is one of the very best at reinventing her sound to remain current. Both release incredible music within those niches. But maybe this Female Vocalist nomination (along with the love for Chris Stapleton) is an indication of the industry voters starting to swing back in favor of more traditional music?

I wouldn't say it's mystifying that "SITW" didn't get any big noms. Who was realistically expecting it to? Carrie hasn't been nominated in Single or Song at the CMAs since her debut album has she? We all knew "Girl Crush" was going to show up in both categories, and I think we all expected Eric Church to be in both categories as well (though it's interesting "Like A Wrecking Ball" got in Song over "Talladega"). I think "Take Your Time" is lame, but it was a big hit so it's not too big of a shock that it's in both. That really only left 2 slots in each category, and Carrie isn't a big enough CMA fave to break in. Anyway, Billboard should have said "Girl Crush" was one of the most downloaded records during the year as opposed to writing "most-played" since it barely cracked the top 10 at radio.

A lot of people here had predicted SITW as a multi-nominee. It was recording breaking, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed, a vocal masterpiece, and it was easily one of the top 5 singles of the year in country music. So despite Carrie's lack of prior nominations, I don't think it was outrageous to expect it to get some love. Which it kinda did... At least it wasn't completely looked over, I guess.

I'm disappointed in the C.M.A. nominating Carrie Underwood two times. I was expecting a lot more than that. Keith Urban did not get a Male Vocalist nomination. He scored four #1s off Fuse, plus another top ten. At least he got a Vocal Event nod for Raise 'Em Up.

Entertainer I wish Carrie had gotten nominated and Shania though it's her last tour and hasn't released new music yet. I think this between Garth, Eric and Miranda to take. Male Please dierks win! Please! You deserve it your overdue!!! Cmas better let dierks win if not give it to Chris Stapleton or Eric church. Female I would love to see Kelsea win even though she's too new. Carrie I think has this one despite lack of nominations if not I'm still ok with Miranda winning. Duo If Florida Georgia line aka (Mario & Luigi) in sheeps clothing win this over Maddie and Tae who are more deserving of this and have had a big year and more acclim I'm gonna hurl???? Group Easily LBT. Hopefully eoty nom is in the future New artist Kelsea Chris , or Maddie and Tae over Sam hunt anyday. Album Kacey, lbt, or Chris is taking it home Song I'm surprised that like a cowboy got in over something in the water and girl in a country song but girl crush is the front runner. Single Girl crush... Anything else over girlcrush to win ???? :sigh: Video Girl in a country song , something in the water , or girl crush are my front runners for me. Musical event I think it's raise em up to win this or wild child

Overall, I'm not 100% happy with the nominations due to a few obvious snubs (yes, Carrie Underwood being two of them - "Something in the Water" should have easily gotten a single and/or song nod), but for the first time in years I'm actually pretty satisfied with the nominations. There's at least one or two people in each category that I can root for, which is more than I can say for the last few years when I literally did not care who won in most of the categories because I didn't like any of the nominees.
To be honest, I have been paying far more attention to the "underground" country scene for the last year or so (aka, the artists country radio ignores), so I don't know that I could really make all that accurate of a prediction for who is likely to win. But here are my predictions, anyway:
New Artist of the Year Sam Hunt - Will win Maddie & Tae - Should win Thomas Rhett Chris Stapleton - Should win Kelsea Ballerini - Will win
Not even sure why Thomas Rhett is in this category, but we all know the CMAs have a very loose definition of "new". I would be thrilled with either Chris Stapleton or Maddie & Tae winning, but I see it going to either Sam Hunt (the most commercial impact) or Kelsea Ballerini (buzzy new female, and this category is her best shot at a win).
Album of the Year Old Boots, New Dirt, Jason Aldean Pageant Material, Kacey Musgraves Pain Killer, Little Big Town The Big Revival, Kenny Chesney Traveller, Chris Stapleton - Should win/Will win
Maybe I'm being optimistic here, but with Chris getting love even in the male vocalist category, perhaps he has enough of a backing to pull off a win here? My second choice would be Pageant Material, though it's burned on me a bit since its release.
Female Vocalist of the Year Miranda Lambert - Will win Kacey Musgraves Carrie Underwood - Should win Lee Ann Womack Kelsea Ballerini
Carrie should easily get the win this year, but we all know by now how this category works. Despite having a slow year with one single failing to make it into the top 15 and another struggling to make it into the top 30, Miranda has this award on lock seemingly for eternity. Doesn't really matter how successful or not her year was (and I am a Miranda fan). For some reason, the CMAs just don't seem to be willing to give Carrie her due. But she can continue making room on her shelf full of Grammys.
Male Vocalist of the Year Dierks Bentley Luke Bryan Eric Church Blake Shelton - Will win Chris Stapleton - Should win
I'm actually not sure who will win this category, I just picked Blake because he has a habit of winning categories where I think he's the least deserving. I'd love to see Chris Stapleton walk away with a win here, but considering how competitive this category is I already think it's a huge feat he was even nominated. I'd be happy with an Eric or Dierks win, too.
Entertainer of the Year Garth Brooks Luke Bryan - Will win Kenny Chesney Eric Church - Should win Miranda Lambert
Miranda's had a pretty quiet year, so it's somewhat surprising to see her nominated here even knowing the love affair voters have with her. I guess she's the token female nomination. I'll pick Luke as the likeliest winner, but I'm really rooting for Eric Church here. He's had a pretty big year and it's seemed for a long time that his team has been gunning for EOTY. I hope he's able to pull it off, but I won't hold my breath.
Single of the Year "American Kids" Kenny Chesney "Girl Crush," Little Big Town - Should win/will win "I Don't Dance," Lee Brice "Take Your Time," Sam Hunt "Talladega," Eric Church
I'll be shocked if this goes to anything other than "Girl Crush".
Music Video of the Year "Biscuits," Kacey Musgraves "Girl Crush," Little Big Town - Will win "Girl In A Country Song," Maddie & Tae "Little Red Wagon," Miranda Lambert "Something In The Water," Carrie Underwood - Should win
I'm guessing "Girl Crush"'s dominance will carry over into this category, but I sure would love to see "Something in the Water" get some love, to help make up for its obvious snubs in the Single/Song categories. I'm somewhat surprised to see "Biscuits" get some love, but pleasantly so. I don't think it has a shot at a win, though. Still, it's nice to see this category dominated by females/female-led talent.
Song of the Year "American Kids," Kenny Chesney "Girl Crush," Little Big Town - Should win/will win "Like A Cowboy," Randy Houser "Like A Wrecking Ball," Eric Church "Take Your Time," Sam Hunt
Again, "Girl Crush" should have this one locked up.
Musical Event of the Year Django and Jimmie, Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard - Should win "Lonely Tonight," Blake Shelton & Ashley Monroe "Raise 'Em Up," Keith Urban & Eric Church - Will win "Smokin' And Drinkin'," Miranda Lambert & Little Big Town "Wild Child," Kenny Chesney & Grace Potter
"Raise 'Em Up" is arguably the most boring song/project in this category, but it seems to be the most obvious winner. It would sure be nice to see Willie and Merle snag a win, though. I'm surprised not to see "Diamond Rings and Old Barstools" in there.
Vocal Duo of the Year Brothers Osborne Dan + Shay Florida Georgia Line - Will win Maddie & Tae - Should win Thompson Square
I'd be thrilled to see either Maddie & Tae or Brothers Osborne walk away with a win here, but they're both too new (Brothers Osborne in particular). Considering this is FGL's only nomination (thanks, voters!), they've got this one on lock.
Vocal Group of the Year Lady Antebellum Little Big Town - Should win/will win Rascal Flatts The Band Perry Zac Brown Band - Should win
I would like to believe ZBB could put up some competition for LBT in this category, but considering their lack of nominations elsewhere I think LBT is a sure bet once again this year.

I have a few thoughts, like all of us do.
Where to start? Ok, overall the nominations aren't bad, however there are some very glaring mistakes. It seems that Bro and R&B country Flare incredibly lacking on the lists and for that I am so thankful, You done good CMA. Traditional country has a very strong presence on the lists, again you done good CMA. Carrie is invisible on certain lists. You F-ed up CMA.
EOTY- A two horse race between Luke and Garth. I'm tired of honorary nominations for this category, it was nice once, but please don't always do this. I am a Miranda fan, but she has, in my eyes, deserved maybe one nomination here ever, and this one wasn't it. My order- Luke, Garth, Kenny, Eric, Miranda.
MVOTY- I must admit, I don't know Chris's music, but I assuredly will be listening to Traveller soon. I would like to see another Chris, Chris Young in this category, so maybe one day. My order- Blake/Luke (either one, thought Blake's reign should end), Dierks/Eric, Chris.
FVOTY- Surprised no Reba, love Lee Ann I'm just shocked. Reba should be in even before Kacey, as Reba charted better, so that's shocking. I thought there might be a change this year, but now I don't know. My order- Miranda/Carrie (unfortunately I hold out hope for Carrie, I will be disappointed), Kelsea, Kacey, Lee Ann.
VDOTY- I would love for Maddie and Tae to win, but... My order- FGL, Maddie and Tae, does the rest even matter?
VGOTY- A true run away. My order- LBT, again doesn't matter.
NAOTY- Thomas with the 3 year career, if you'd please exit the category. Now, some good options here, gonna be a good category to watch. My order- Sam Hunt (hope not), Kelsea (hope not), Maddie and Tae (hopefully), Thomas, Chris.
Album- A little surprising. My order- PM, PK, T, TBR, OBND.
Single- Disappointing category. I liked AK, but really? IDD, I'm over it. SITW, oh wait, there's the mistake. Honestly, it doesn't matter, Uptown Funk could have been thrown in here, because there's one that will and should win. My order- GC, TYT,IDD, AK, T.
Song- Again kind of disappointing. Where's Carrie? My order- GC, LAC, TYT, LAWB, AK.
VEOTY- I'm not sure why DiamonD Rings was left out for S&D, I like the song but come on it's at #33, to DRAOB #3. My order- REU, LT, S&D, WC, D&J.
MVideoOTY- All female or female lead, very nice. But God forbid you throw Carrie a bone. My order- GIACS, LRW, SITW, GC, B.
Honestly, I think Chris is the Kacey Musgraves of this year's show, meaning they may award him despite radio's resistance.

I don't know why, but I thought that the CMAs, like Blake would've dropped Miranda. Is it too soon, for that joke? Don't think there's ever a good time to make that joke at all.

You hit the nail on the head when you said, "carrie isn't a big enough CMA fave to break in". It's been obvious to me for a long time that with this group of CMA voters' nominations and wins are based on favouritism and nothing to do with actual performing stats and yes even talent. Let me modify my statement by saying ' not all nominations and wins' are based on favouritism. Some of the nominees are so lacking in credentials for the nomination given, relative to other artists that it is embarrassing and joke worthy.

Couple observations/comments...
I was surprised Sam Hunt didn't get an album nom for "Montevallo". I would have expected it to get in over Aldean.
Would have loved to see Lee Ann get a surprise album nom for "The Way I'm Livin'" and for Reba to get that FV slot instead of her. Hope Lee Ann will get a performance slot. I know Male and Female nominees usually perform, but it's not necessarily a given is it?
People are often surprised that Tim McGraw never gets any award show love, but it's been that way (for the most part) for a long time. I've always gotten a sense that it's something political.
Surprised to see "Wrecking Ball" get a Song nom over "Talladega". Wonder if the Luke Laird voting block went for "American Kids" instead of "Talladega"?

I listened to "Traveller" and am now all behind it for an AOTY win, I wouldn't mind if Chris swept all his categories.

Shocked that Chris Stapleton got more than an album of the year nomination (icing on the cake would be him actually getting to sing on this platform). Also pleasantly surprised that Dierks is up for Male Vocalist of the year.

Dang it. I was hoping for a Reba female vocalist nomination so that she'd at least have a chance to perform. Surprised to see Lee Ann Womack there over her. My thoughts exactly. I'm really disappointed not to see her there; I thought that she was basically a lock. I guess it's not overly shocking, since the CMAs haven't been overly kind to Reba over the course of her career, especially the last two decades of it. Still, it's a big disappointment though. Overall though, the nominations aren't bad. Basically who you'd expect to see. Chris Stapleton's Male Vocalist nomination is probably the biggest surprise to me (along with Lee Ann Womack's).

My thoughts
Entertainer- Well I an shocked Miranda got in. None of her songs within the time none of them made the top 5 of airplay. Meanwhile Carrie had 2 songs in the Top 5. Not to mention others like Tim McGraw, Little Big Town and heck Blake Shelton should've been nominated.
Male Vocalist: Eh can we remove Blake from this or like Eric and put Tim McGraw or Keith Urban.
Female Vocalist: So happy Lee Ann was nominated sure she didn't have any radio success but her album is far better than Reba's ( Reba is good but not great) Not surprised by the other 4 even if one shouldn't be in since she's pop *cough* Kelsea *cough*. I am hopeful for a Carrie win but I have doubts
Vocal Group. I really am surprised to see Rascal Flatts there given their mediocre year. I thought Parmalee would've made it or A Thousand Horses. Happy that Lady A got nominated. But it's Little Big Towns to lose.
Vocal Duo. Really Thompson Square the band who is probably gonna get dropped soon (please do). While FGL have all but a lock on this thing I will still hope Maddie & Tae can pull in an upset.
New Artist. Ugh really Thomas Rhett really. I would've put Canaan Smith, A Thousand Horses or like anybody else. Unpopular opinion not impressed by Chris Stapleton and I still don't know why. I am rooting for Maddie & Tae all the way.
The rest I don't care about but seriously Take Your Time gets nominated over SITW or LTG. Carrie had story songs while that was a hookup track.

14887fan"Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore" reminds me a lot of "He Stopped Loving Her Today", AMAZING. I'm honestly going to get his album as soon as I get out of work. I cannot believe I didn't know about Chris, I'm literally mad at myself! When the album first came out an article mentioned "Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore". I think Stapleton wrote that song in 10 minutes.

Looking at the Video of the Year category, that's how I would have liked to have seen the Single of the Year category look. Not just because I like all of the songs in the Video of the Year category (yes, even "Little Red Wagon") but because it would have sent a welcome message for all of the Single of the Year nominees to have been voiced by female artists and written by at least one female co-writer. I know that was an unrealistic hope, though, for many reasons.
I'm going to guess that Chris Stapleton will win the CMA for Album of the Year while Sam Hunt wins for New Artist. I think that this is another year in which the takeaway from the CMA winners is that, radio notwithstanding, country is a big umbrella, tent or whatever the favored analogy of the day is. I expect the default winners in the remaining individual artist categories, though it feels a little more possible than I would have imagined a year ago that Blake will finally be unseated in Male Vocalist (with a narrative about how the CMA voters are #TeamMiranda to follow, naturally).

Stapleton will win one of the three, with Album and Male Vocalist ahead of new artist (they may decide to give that to Hunt for his sales success).
