Streaming really is having a massive impact. It *is* probably the best representation of what people are listening to, but it does really bog down the chart. But is it? For example: Say I bought UT and listen to it 30x per week over 20 weeks or so v. Cheerleader which I've streamed 3x per week over 20 weeks. Is it really accurate to say that my purchase should only be counted once for one chart even though I've listened to it 10x more than Cheerleader, whose points from me are counted multiple times over a chart life. That's part of my issue with the weighing, not counting, of streaming. Sales are severely discounted in terms of chart representation. Yes, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to measure how often people listen to songs purchased, but non-purchased song gain a huge chart advantage. What I'm referring to is that the number of people who primarily stream music is growing and likely a much larger audience than those who regularly buy music. Which I think is borne out by the numbers. 15+ million for a #1 streaming song vs just over 100k for a #1 selling song. That's a difference of 150x. I think it's just reality at this point that if someone wants to hear a particular song, they're much more likely to stream it than buy it. If it was easy to track how many times purchased songs were played, I'd be in favor of adding that in as well to measure popularity... but it's not easy, and it also would be adding an element that earns no revenue as the label/artist earn the same from a purchase whether it's later listened to 1000 times or just once. (Also, I actually think it was a mistake to lump passive and on-demand streaming together. If anything I'd merge passive streaming into the airplay chart, as they both are essentially doing the same thing -- letting you pick a genre and then choosing songs for you.)

I completely agree that the shift to streaming from paid is at point of no return. As someone who always enjoyed purchasing music, during the few months, my purchases are rare and usually classic deluxe collections - as I've moved to paid streaming/YouTube to supplement Sirius/XM. You make a great point with passive streaming v. on-demand. I alwasy considered passive exactly the same as radio and that's what pushed me to paid. As far as measuring individual listening - who knows with GPS/NSA what information is actually being stored. Seriously, as far as the revenue model, I'm wondering if it ends up becoming more profiltable to stream v sell singles - and if so, will it make sense to make sales 'album'-only with the exception of radio promoted singles (like the good old days).

Yes, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to measure how often people listen to songs purchased, but non-purchased song gain a huge chart advantage. Unless they use last.fm or other sites/apps that capture home-listening (and I suspect many people would have issues with that), you can't measure how often purchased tracks are listened to after the fact. I agree with you though and it's my one issue with sales vs. streaming that sales can only get counted once, but I think this formula has it down enough for the time being.

The sales lead of CFMF over Cheerleader is continuing to grow. I am fairly certain that CFMF will return to #1 next week.

What makes "Cheerleader" reggae? As in, what specific song elements?

What makes "Cheerleader" reggae? As in, what specific song elements? They probably mean the original version, not the remixed version people unfathomably love for some reason.

Yes at Good For You rising 10-6! This song looks like it's going to have some amazing longevity, really would be amazing if it could hit Top 3, it's sales are still doing so well two months later, hopefully she performs this somewhere when her airplay peaks!

Fancy top 10 chart run: 7-4-3-2-*1*-1-1-1-1-1-1-...... Cheerleader top 10 chart run so far: 7-4-3-2-*1*-1-1-1-2-1-1- So similar huh for these two songs of summer (hopefully cheerleader makes it)? They would be identical if the weeknd didn't chime in.. but wait..

Recurrent rules are not automatic. They are subjective, and if there is a possibility that a song may still reach a new peak, they may keep it on.

Yea it's enough it gains on one format even if its chart points are down.
I'm very interested in seeing how long El Perdon manages to stay on chart.

Straight Outta Compton #38 WOW, 27 years after the release! And it's the Hot Shot Debut this week which I think is really neat for a 27 year-old song!

I'm not 100% positive, but I think this takes second place now for the longest time between initial release and first Hot 100 appearance (so discounting remakes, samples, and older songs that had previously charted). The only song that I know took longer was Benny Bell's novelty song "Shaving Cream". It was first recorded in 1946, and reached number 30 in 1975 after Dr. Demento featured it. 29 years is a long time to wait!

Oh, no! "Terrence loves you" did not make hot 100!! The song was released on Friday, August 21. The tracking week for digital sales ended on Thursday, August 20 for this chart. If it is going to enter the Hot 100, it will debut on the next chart.

So anyone know what's with the two oldschool hip-hop songs this week? I think it's because of that smash hip-hop drama Straight Outta Compton. It reminds me of when Missy Elliott's raps charted following the Super Bowl.
