21 = Titanic 25 = Avatar
I'm not predicting 25 to outsell 21 necessarily, but the common logic was absolute certainty that Adele's next album would severely drop off in popularity from 21 because it was a once-in-a-lifetime success and that's just how these things have gone with other artists in the past. But seeing the response to Hello and the pre-orders for 25 honestly reminds me of the movie world and how everyone said James Cameron had had once-in-a-lifetime success, he'd waited too long for the followup, rampant predictions of doom, gloom, disappointment relative to Titanic, etc etc, but when Avatar was finally released it ended up being a global smash and making even more money.
So, I'm not saying she will, but how many times does Adele have to shatter all expectations before she stops being underestimated?

The interesting thing about this album's sales that can't really be predicted are the casual buyers. Those people who rarely ever buy albums or might buy one CD a year, if that, who might be enticed to buy this if they see it on the counter at the cash. Those are the ones who could help push it to the extreme highs, especially if they buy several copies as Xmas gifts. I definitely think 2 million is possible in the first week as long as supplies are there. People will be in stores anyway. The sales are guaranteed to come from anyone who buys music regularly. It's practically guaranteed to be that one CD people who buy one CD a year will get. It's just a matter of timing and convenience.

Wonder if they'll be streaming at street date anywhere. I have a feeling they'll handle it like Beyoncé and only have the singles available to stream for at least a few months

kanimal posted this in the album release date thread: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298171Thursday, October 22, 2015 FOUR WILD CARDSBeyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye, Coldplay and Navigating Q4How do the expected Q4 releases from Columbia’s Beyoncé (whose previous album bowed with 618k on 12/15/13), Roc Nation’s Rihanna (238k, 11/25/12), Def Jam’s Kanye West (327k, 6/23/13) and Parlophone’s Coldplay (383k, 5/25/14), all with release dates TBD, fit into the picture? Beyoncé will debut at #1 no matter when her album drops, apart from 11/20; otherwise, Adele is a heavy favorite to hold the top spot through the rest of the year. There appear to be two or three windows—Dec. 4, 11 and possibly the 18th—and the prognosticators believe a first week of 300k could knock Adele off the top perch. Considering their respective sales histories, Beyoncé and Coldplay have shown they can hit or surpass the magic number, while Rihanna’s previous five releases have averaged just under 200k, and Kanye’s track record is too erratic to make a call one way or the other. If Beyoncé’s album makes it this year, it will almost certainly crush the others, while Coldplay would outperform Rihanna and Kanye. And although Kanye is not hot record-wise, he should still outsell Rihanna, whose forthcoming album has no vibe yet. It’s also worth noting that there’s a Tidal connection to all four releases. The three solo artists and Chris Martin were all at the launch and all have business and personal relationships with Jay Z. Rights holders, meanwhile, shudder to think of how Tidal’s involvement could have a dramatic negative impact on the worldwide sales of any of those four releases. Tidal has still not paid licensing fees to the major rights holders, but because of Jay Z’s personal relationships he’s drawn a pass for now. No major rights holder wants to take the heat for shutting Tidal down because of the different artists’ involvement—and all assume this situation will resolve with either the service’s closure or its sale to a deeper pocket. Coldplay is now out Dec. 4.

Yes- the music industry needs an event record like this one. 21 left most other releases in the dust, with no album in recent years coming remotely close to its 11m+ in sales. And it looks like that may be the case with this album.
Rather than a big falloff from huge albums- think Alanis Morissette, Hootie and the Blowfish, etc.- could we be seeing an instance where most of the people who purchased 21 eventually purchase 25? :o

Ok so no chance for Rihanna being #1 then this year. Maybe she won't release in 2015 after all.

The album wasn't bad, but it was also far different in tone than JLP.

SloLove- given that Rihanna's had just one No. 1 album, I don't think that would be a big factor in choosing the album's release date.

There are plenty of examples of mega-albums being followed up by relative flops: Alanis, Ace Of Base, Gaga, loads more.
But Michael Jackson is a pretty poor example. Yes, Bad wasn't AS BIG as Thriller, but it was still absolutely humungous and even outsold Thriller in some territories (like the UK, although Thriller has overtaken Bad again in the long run). Almost every song on Bad was released as a single and most were huge hits in their own right. Even Dangerous in 1991 was also huge, although it was much bigger outside of the US than inside. The real downturn in MJ's career didn't happen after Thriller, but after the sexual misconduct allegations in the early 90's.

Yep. He still scored a #1 on Hot 100 in 1995, and a top ten hit 5 years after his death.

Probably not but I tried to say that basically #1 slots for the rest of the year are given. My prediction Ellie Goulding One Direction Adele Coldplay Adele Possible surprise release by Beyoncé is the only thing that can change things, probably

^Could be- though there's speculation on a Queen B. release, so it would be less of a surprise than last year's release. ;)

I honestly hope she sells 2 million in one week; that would be phenomenal! Even as a Britney stan I want her to break the record too but not just britney's eminem's and nsync's too. All held their records for 15 years. Most importantly Britney held hers for 15 years where pop girls have released at least 1 album and at most 7 albums from that time period and didn't overtake the record. Britney has a couple more accolades bigger than the first week sales record so it's no big tug at all of her accolades. Go Adele. I want her to push it back to Black Friday but I have a feeling that's being reserved for Beyonce or Rihanna.

No, unless Beyonce or Rihanna release exclusively digital, there are no big releases on black Friday. Since black Friday really starts on Thursday now, big stores like Target weren't going to stock any Friday releases that week because it'll be too difficult logistically to stock shelves in large quantities when they're open over night for the holidays.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298325Tuesday, November 3, 2015 RIHANNA UPDATE: SEE YOU NEXT YEAR?The latest indicators suggest that Roc Nation's Rihanna may be laying the groundwork to push the release of her new album, ANTI, to 2016. This follows the grenade lobbed by the star's Dad in the U.K. tabloid The Sun, in which he said his daughter was "unhappy" with the record and that her confidence had flagged. Sources say she has bowed out of the 12/8 Victoria's Secret TV special on CBS; in addition to the AMAs, what other seasonal commitments might be in jeopardy? As we mentioned in our earlier story, questions surround the potential Samsung album giveaway, among other issues, and pressure from Adele makes a #1 Q4 chart bow for RiRi unlikely. Might she wait until Grammy time to roll out her new set?

Rihanna's New Album Might Arrive Next Month News / Record Labels
By Billboard Staff | November 03, 2015 5:42 PM EST
The release of Rihanna's highly-anticipated eighth studio album, ANTI, has hit a few snags as the singer and her Roc Nation label/management company try to determine the best way to roll out the album. Last month reports surfaced that ANTI was due out Nov. 6, which a source debunked to Billboard, and with Justin Bieber's Purpose and One Direction's Made In The A.M. both arriving Nov. 13 and Adele's 25 hitting stores Nov. 20, ANTI now looks like it will be released in December, with a rumored surprise release likely.
Why the hold up? A source tells Billboard that Rihanna has been struggling to pick her next single and canceled several commitments that had been lined up for promotional purposes. Meanwhile, Roc Nation boss Jay Z has been looking into roll out strategies from other successful non-traditional releases, including Beyoncé's surprise self-titled LP and his own reported $30 million Samsung partnership for the release of his 2013 album Magna Carta... Holy Grail, which essentially gave his album away for free to the first million Samsung Galaxy S III, S 4 and Note II phone owners who registered for a custom app.
And while it still hasn't been confirmed -- a source told Billboard last week that it's in the works, though it hasn't yet been finalized -- Rihanna is reportedly lining up her own Samsung deal to the tune of $25 million for her album and subsequent world tour, which has apparently been held up due to changes to the final LP. There are streaming questions as well; Rihanna was one of the 16 artists announced as a co-owner of TIDAL, while Samsung has its own streaming service, Milk Music.
Rihanna's been on a roll of late, despite coming up on three years since the release of her last album Unapologetic. She's had three singles -- "Bitch Better Have My Money" (15), "American Oxygen" (78) and "FourFiveSeconds" with Paul McCartney and Kanye West (4) -- land on the Hot 100 this year, and Unapologetic became the singer's first-ever No. 1 album in 2012. But with Adele setting records already with "Hello" and 25 on track to move a million copies in its first week without breaking a sweat, the top of the charts are getting crowded as the year winds down.

So Billboard has decided to play the damage-control E! to Hits' no-fucks-given TMZ? That's sweet of them.

What else has Rihanna cancelled that she was supposed to be on? I wish she would have debuted a new single on the AmA's. Maybe the finale on "The Voice"?????

So what do we think: Adele's 3rd week vs. Coldplay's opening week. Who will be #1? I would like for Coldplay to get another #1, but right now I'd give the edge to Adele partly because we still don't know much about the Coldplay project yet. We're one month out and other than the poster and confirmation of a music video being filmed along with one new song (which received no buzz) it's hard to tell how this era will go. They'll have a big debut like always, but who knows if it'll be enough to over take Adele. With how holiday sales usually go, I think the December 4th week is the only remaining week this year where Adele would be at risk to not be #1. Her sales will start to increase the closer it gets to Christmas (as will everyone) so it'll take Beyonce pulling a Beyonce again to take her down. I don't think anything else has a shot.

looks like this part was not posted. RIHANNA COUNTS Questions Abound Over New Album's Rollout According to members of her team, one of the major stumbling blocks to Samsung’s planned giveaway of Rihanna’s forthcoming album, ANTI—as part of the highly publicized $25m deal with the tech giant—is how to make it count on the charts. Assuming, of course, that she puts it out in Q4. The bible brain trust that decides these things has come up with a new ruling, which turns out to be rather problematic: They’ll count the free offer from Samsung if the coupon can be redeemed for any album—and, although the offer will be wrapped in Rihanna marketing, the coupon must feature type big enough to make it clear that consumers have a choice of album. The back-and-forth between Roc Nation (which is both her label and her management) and the bible over how to execute the promotion has reportedly been fierce, to say the least.
Adding further drama has been a series of date changes for the release, which had been scheduled originally for 11/20, then moved to 11/6 and now looks headed to 12/4 or 12/11. Once Adele was added to the schedule, the scramble to find a new date began—and the plan to set up a huge sponsored giveaway became the only viable alternative to a brutal chart spanking from the British Queen of Pop. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298319

Tomorrow might actually be a good time for Rihanna to release, as it's still soon enough to sort of be a "surprise", and it might be her last chance at going #1 as competition might be too stiff for the rest of the year.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298366Friday, November 6, 2015 IT'S OFFICIAL: COLDPLAY CLAIMS 12/4 FOR DREAMSColdplay’s A Head Full of Dreams has been confirmed for the 12/4 Q4 slot after the album’s first official single “Adventure of a Lifetime” debuted on Chris Evans’ Radio 2 Breakfast Show this morning. It’s the band’s seventh and possibly final album, and will be released via Parlophone/Atlantic. An intriguing cast of collaborators is on hand, with more guests than have ever graced a Coldplay album before. Those names include Beyoncé, former Oasis leader Noel Gallagher, Swedish dance vocalist Tove Lo and soul great Merry Clayton. The 12-track set has been produced by Rik Simpson and Norwegian duo Stargate and recorded in Malibu, Henson in Hollywood and Air Studios in London. It was teased via posters spotted on London’s Underground last week, followed by Coldplay posting gifs of the album’s artwork and sound clips on Monday. “Adventure of a Lifetime” is out now a la carte and as an instant-grat offering for those preordering A Head Full of Dreams, which opened this morning. The group will appear on Evans’ recently revitalized U.K. TV show TFI Friday this evening. After speaking to Evans, the band then appeared on Nick Grimshaw's Radio 1 show and were added to the Radio 2 A list and Radio 1 B list. A Head Full of Dreams is the follow-up to 2014's Ghost Stories, Coldplay's sixth consecutive worldwide chart-topper and multimillion seller. The band chose not to tour the “quiet and small” Ghost Stories and headed straight back into the studio to record A Head Full of Dreams, an album that they told Evans is “colorful, and the sound of us being free, happy and very grateful to be in our group.” A worldwide tour will be announced in due course. Coldplay is managed by Dave Holmes and has been with Parlophone throughout the band’s 15-year career.

"Ghost Stories" opened up with 383k in May 2014. I'm think Maybe 300k-425k, due to their following, and it's December.
