How can a single song be played 700 times a day? It's absolutely insane and overkill. Not just in this case, but it's not cool for any song in general. I guess you mean 700 more times in a single day, 'cause the #1 song on pop in the current climate tends to be played around 2500~ a day (to go with a 7-day total around 17500+). Yeah that's what I meant. It's gotten really worse in the last 3 years.

It's rare to have a song that hits it just for a single week. "When I Was Your Man" and "Part of Me" and "Bad Blood" are the only three that I can find since 2012. Some spent a week at the top, dipped, and then returned, but other than that, it's multi-week runs.

It was for a period of time though and there were long reigns at #1 too. I actually think there's a decent turnover rate at the top of the CHR chart (except for maybe in the first few months of the year for lack of new releases), it's just the amount of spins that's become ridiculous imo.

Some spent a week at the top, dipped, and then returned, but other than that, it's multi-week runs. Crazy how for most of the mid-late 80s until the early 90s (nearly 8 years) not ONE song spent more than 4 weeks at #1 and that was rare! lol. While from '80-'84, you frequently had a similar situation to what's happening today. Obviously the chart methodology was beyond archaic during the entire decade (until Soundscan changed the game in 1991) but I wonder what happened in 84/85 to make there be such a lack of huge/ long #1 hits. Lack of quality songs or a change in around '85 to the charts formula that caused more turnover? Even so..there was still no Soundscan and throughout the entire 80s charts were dependent (far as I know) was all about radio stations playlists and stores reporting sales. Back to today and Adele/Hello... this is most def. is looking like it's gonna shatter some major records. W/ these kind of updates (ESP. on pop) but other formats, it being Adele and a song most people love, at the min. looks like she's gonna pass We Belong Together with ease. It'll ultimately be all about how many weeks on top of the Hot 100. I know it's only week 2/3 but the song just isn't showing ANY signs of front-loadedness. W/ radio and promotion barely even impacting yet, this song is def. something to be reckoned with/ to look out for (again on the Hot 100).

It's rare to have a song that hits it just for a single week. "When I Was Your Man" and "Part of Me" and "Bad Blood" are the only three that I can find since 2012. Some spent a week at the top, dipped, and then returned, but other than that, it's multi-week runs. That's a different issue entirely as that stems from the addition of streaming onto the Hot 100. Streaming has taught us that people love familiarity and willingly play the same song many, many times. Who knew? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, the problem #LisaRinna was discussing was more to do with the overplaying of the top hits on the pop chart. Of course panel changes attribute to this, but even at that, in 2010 when Katy Perry broke the spin record for "California Gurls" when she crossed 13,000 spins, her spins per station ratio, which was also a record at the time, was sitting in the mid 90s. (95/96 something IIRC?) And prior to that, the record wasn't broken fairly often. "Lady Marmalade" and "Complicated" held it for awhile until I believe "Poker Face"? Then "California Gurls" came to do it. Suddenly it was being broken left and right: "Grenade," "Firework," "I Knew You Were Trouble.," "Can't Hold Us," etc. etc. Then it was a big deal when 100 spins per station was broken. Now? It's common for a song to flirt with 100 SPS and even cross it for the big hits. "Bad Blood" currently holds the record with 104.374 spins per station. Doing some simple math, that means the top songs are getting played roughly 14-15 times a day per station. That's more than once per hour! Yikes! It didn't used to be that way. The only thing I can figure out is that the number of people listening to the radio is down and people just don't listen to the radio as often as they used to. This means stations have to play the big hits more often to make sure their listeners hears them. Also, standardized playlists. "Hello," however, is currently sitting at 63.899 SPS, translating to roughly 9 spins per day per station. Not too crazy. The reason for its big updates has less to do with the amount of times it's being played and more to do with standardized playlists. "Hello" is just so massive, it's being put on heavy rotation everywhere at the same time. Even if all station bumped it up by only one spin today, so 10 spins per day per station, that's an increase of 188 spins that it was not getting before on a day-to-day basis, pushing the tally for the week up to 13160 spins, giving her like a daily increase over 1000. So, yeah, it just appears that nearly every station is quickly increasing their spins for "Hello" due to its success and likely because the corporations that own them are forcing it into their playlists. Not that that's a bad thing here since "Hello" is obviously one of the most well-received songs in a long time, but this is definitely an issue for stuff that people may not be that into.

The radio edit that I think was officially serviced cuts the second chorus and the bridge in half, and it ends on the second-to-last chord instead of the last. But I'd like to hear the edit you described. Sounds cool. :) EDIT: On this week's SiriusXM Hits 1 Weekend Countdown, this song leaps 14-3 on only its SECOND WEEK. :O If you are interested Verse #2 and part of chorus #2 Final chorus Sounds like the DJ Mike D remix that just leaked in full. A lot of radio stations hop on his remixes ("Somebody That I Used To Know", "Take Me To Church"), etc.

I love the Mike D remix. I hope they release it for purchase like Demi's 'Give Your Heart A Break'.
I was in 3 different stores and a restaurant today when I was shopping, and I heard 'Hello' in each one. The power.

Don't f**k it up AC, let her dominate the chart for at least a week On the building chart she hit #1 yesterday - she'll close the week out with a huge lead, which will get bigger as stations are already starting to flip to Xmas based on some of the new entries on the chart and the large drops by other hits (some of that I'm sure relates to ADELE 'stealing' current hit airplay from certain newer songs).

"Hello" should have no problem logging a couple weeks at #1 on AC before anything Christmas-related takes over, then likely reclaim the top by the end of the year. Here's how last year shaped up: Nov. 7: "Shake It Off" reaches #1 (in its 80th day on the chart) Nov. 9: "Baby It's Cold Outside" enters at #45 Dec. 3: "Baby It's Cold Outside" reaches #1 Dec. 29: "Shake It Off" reclaims #1
We're a few days after when "Baby It's Cold Outside" debuted last year, with three holiday songs in the top 50: 40. Seal - "This Christmas" (day 3 in top 50) 42. Train - "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" (debut) 44. India.Arie & Joe Sample - "Favorite Time Of Year" (feat. Tori Kelly) (debut)
I haven't paid a ton of attention to the holiday landscape this year, but Train seems the most likely to me to start moving up quickly in the next few weeks, but with the album being an Amazon exclusive among digital retailers, I wouldn't be surprised if its promotional efforts are lower than something like the Idina Menzel album last year (which also benefitted from strong holiday seller Michael Bublé and a successful, well-publicized music video). Along with the fact that "Hello" came out later than "Shake It Off" did and has moved more quickly, I feel like Adele can easily log two or three weeks at the top before anything takes over, then take it back quickly after Christmas.

Comes in at the top on both pop and HAC callout scores: highest positive, lowest negative, highest net positive, highest favorite, and lowest burn rate. On both. Queen. :'( Add AC to the list. :'( It even has a 0.0% burn rate. :O :O :O The pop callout scores improved quite a bit, too. :O

My health club only plays our local Rock station. The rock station plays mostly hard rock and never pop stuff but believe it or not they have added Hello. They never play ballads. It shows the power of Adele.

I love her and all but anytime I watch a music video on Vevo "Hello" automatically plays after lol. Kind of annoying, like let me decide what I will watch hahah. I wonder how many views she is receiving just from this tactic alone.

Song def has grown on me. I know its ALL about her voice but I wish the production (esp towards the end) had harder, intense drums during the final key chorus/melody to make it even more powerful. I'm still thinking of the video/album version. Haven't heard it in a while for some reason but I think the main radio version/mix was tweaked up which made it better than album version. Video is good but too much talking and background noise. Wish it was ALL about her voice and the song and all the other parts were mimed.

The number of unique Hot 100 #1s has been decreasing annually, too. A single song just dominates for weeks and weeks now. It's rare to have a song that hits it just for a single week. "When I Was Your Man" and "Part of Me" and "Bad Blood" are the only three that I can find since 2012. Some spent a week at the top, dipped, and then returned, but other than that, it's multi-week runs. Yeah but that's another issue, because the Hot 100 is not entirely made up of airplay. It was for a period of time though and there were long reigns at #1 too. I actually think there's a decent turnover rate at the top of the CHR chart (except for maybe in the first few months of the year for lack of new releases), it's just the amount of spins that's become ridiculous imo. I think it's more the consolidation of stations into groups like ClearChannel more than anything else. I know that way back in 2003, I could reliably hear "Unwell" every 2 hours on my home station (=84 SPS/week discounting morning shows), to the point that a couple of days I actually turned the radio on only at those times. I think the reason the songs get such immense SPS now is because if ClearChannel is putting Stitches into power rotation, that's a LOT of stations who are all consistently playing it every 90 minutes or whatever. Back in the day, you didn't see so much synchrony. Edit: Didn't see Austin's post that made this exact same point a day ago. =P
