133. "Hey Heartbreak" - Jennifer Nettles Peak: 28 (so far) Total Points: 184 Certification: None
I am so glad Jennifer released this song as her newest single! I love it so far! The only complaint I have is the annoying bridge to the song. But I LOVE the melody and rhythmic groove. I love the unexpected range Jennifer uses in the chorus (The "Hey Heartbreak" parts are pretty mid-range, but then "Down down down down" gets lower, and the "I swept up" suddenly gets pretty high.) Jennifer's accent could be pretty polarizing, as usual, and I could definitely see it affecting some peoples' enjoyment of a song like this, but I am used to it and love it at this point. But my favorite part of this song is the lyrics. It is a constant personification, as Jennifer keeps addressing emotions as if they are people. She's kicking Sleepless out of her bed, asking Crazy to leave her alone, asking Laughter where she is, and breaking up with Heartbreak. It's all just a very interesting perspective. This is a song I expect to finish high on the 2017 year-end chart.
Hey sleepless, my eyes are red. Why don't you get out of my bed. I don't want to watch the fan no more. And hey crazy, that's enough. I'm sick of tripping on all your stuff Scattered across my bedroom floor.

132. "Southern Boy" - Jordan Rager ft. Jason Aldean Peak: 28 Total Points: 211
Certification: NoneWhen Jordan Rager came along, he was a self-proclaimed Jason Aldean copycat. Now, I wouldn't pay 25 cents to see Jason Aldean live, so you can imagine how hard I rolled my eyes at the thought of another him coming along. And then just when I thought I couldn't roll my eyes any harder, it is announced that THE FIRST SINGLE FEATURES JASON ALDEAN HIMSELF. Let me tell you, I was about the maximum amount of skeptical possible and then some. And then I actually heard the song. "Southern Boy" is actually really good! Jordan doesn't sound too bad, and Jason Aldean's vocals actually sound really good too! I had to share both the music video and the lyric video because for some reason they chose not to put Jason Aldean in the music video, but he actually adds to the song in my opinion. This song got stuck at #28 because I didn't feel like moving Jason Aldean or any of his copycats up TOO far on my chart... Also, there were just a lot of super strong songs ahead of it, and this song exceeded my expectations but was still a pretty average song overall.Southern sky watching over you, Looking down on your little town and the hearts that hold your roots.

131. "Heartbreak Song" - Mickey Guyton Peak: 30 Total Points: 217 Certification: NoneMickey Guyton does manage to make another appearance on the countdown!! Unfortunately, the only reason this song places higher than "Better Than You Left Me" is because it had the benefit of having its entire chart run on my chart. "Heartbreak Song" is nothing but radio fluff, and it never really grew on me despite my overall love for Mickey and desire to see her succeed. I am not surprised that it didn't do very well on the country charts. This song falls flat in that it doesn't allow her voice to shine, and there is really nothing special about the lyrics. "I heard you told your friends I wrote you a breakup song" is a pretty interesting opening line, I will admit. But otherwise there is nothing to necessarily like about this song except for the sass. The previous single going #1 and then this one only hitting #30 is one of the biggest discrepancies in my chart history. I think the only bigger one is Dierks Bentley hitting #1 with "Riser" and then peaking at #43 with "Somewhere On A Beach".I ain't gonna hit you with a heartbreak song. I ain't gonna give you what you're betting on. 'Cause boy you don't deserve a single word. Don't know if you heard; I forgot all about you.

Here's how I'd rank the 5 songs tonight
Billy Currington Drinking Town With A Football Problem 5/10 (sorry never cared for it) Drake White Livin The Dream 6/10 (decent radio fluff, Drake White has so much potential) Jennifer Nettles Hey Heartbreak 8/10 (this is actually one of my least favorite songs from the album) Jordan Rager Southern Boy 7/10 (guilty pleasure) Mickey Guyton Heartbreak Song 4/10 (this song is so beneath Mickey Guyton, it's catchy but not in the good sense for me)

Whoop! "Hey Heartbreak" makes the countdown. Easily one of my favorite songs this year. Now I am eager to see how it places next year. I get it, "Heartbreak Song" is radio fluff, but it's a total guilty pleasure of mine. I can't stop listening to it. It might make me a hypocrite when it comes to similar songs, because I usually would disregard a song like this. But, it works for me. And it's funny, I don't get why I enjoy it.

130. "Kill A Word" - Eric Church ft. Rhiannon Giddens Peak: 25 (so far) Total Points: 220 Certification: None
This song is so lyrically relevant right now. I absolutely love the lyrics of this song! I love it for the same reasons mentioned in "Hey Heartbreak" earlier. Eric continually personifies different negative words as things that he is going to kill. Which is kinda gruesome in theory, but he manages to keep it completely PG and therefore keeps the focus on the overall message of the song rather than the severity of the lyrics. I don't quite like this song as much as his last hit, "Record Year", but overall this is yet another solid offering from Eric Church, who I am really starting to like lately after being lukewarm for several years.
I'd knock out temptation's teeth. I'd sever evil and let it bleed, Light up wicked, stand and watch it burn. I'd take vice and I'd take vile, And tie 'em up there with hostile. Hang 'em high and leave 'em for the birds, If I could only kill a word.

129. "There's A Girl" - Trent Harmon Peak: 22 (so far) Total Points: 220 Certification: None
Trent Harmon also manages to sneak onto the countdown with his current (and first!) single. I must admit, I did not plan to like this song at all when I heard about it. The first comments I heard from people were displaying all kind of vitriol over him releasing a country song despite not being a very good fit for country. But I listened to this song and gave it a chance. And I actually love it! It is not just some generic bro country anthem like so many new male vocalists release these days in an attempt at a quick hit (but it actually still manages to sound kinda like one). The lyrics have depth, and are actually pretty sweet. I am very much a hopeless romantic, so songs about how wonderful girls are that actually respect women always catch my attention. I'm not sure what my future feelings towards Trent will be, but this is a very solid debut single from him!
Why would we ask when we know we can't dance? Show our hands and change our plans? Lose our minds, break our hearts And learn to play guitar? Why does any man do anything in the whole damn world? 'Cause there's a girl.

128. "You Should Be Here" - Cole Swindell Peak: 24 Total Points: 245 Certification: None
By far Cole Swindell's best single to date, in terms of song quality (I actually like a couple of his older songs better though). He proves with this song that he is not just another bro, he is actually capable of releasing songs with substance. And what a better way to prove it than releasing a tear-jerker about missing his father? Unfortunately, what this song needs is a better vocalist. Cole Swindell has a decent enough voice, but for some reason his performances are consistently devoid of emotion. In the auspices of Toby Keith, Chris Young, Tim McGraw, or any number of other male vocalists, this song could have been an absolutely fantastic top 10 hit for me. With Cole Swindell, it was only able to reach #24.
It's perfect outside. It's like god let me dial up the weather. Got the whole crew here. I ain't seen some of them in forever. It's one of those never forget it, Better stop and take it in kinda scenes. Everything's just right, yeah, except for one thing.

127. "Whiskey On My Breath" - Love and Theft Peak: 20 Total Points: 248 Certification: NoneThis is an absolutely amazing song. It is also one that I almost didn't chart, believe it or not. I think this one actually came out BEFORE my chart started, and I figured it would disappear forever with no impact whatsoever. I mean, does this sound anything like what you would hear on country radio nowadays!? Well, it ended up sticking around for several months and actually became a song I heard pretty regularly on the radio But by that point I thought it was too late to debut because it was just so old. It just HAD to drop any week now! But it continued to stick around for a loong time. And then it finally seemed to peak and disappear. And then Love and Theft signed a new record deal. And then it was announced that the new label was going to KEEP PUSHING THIS SONG!! So finally I gave in and charted it. It had a pretty quick chart run, and then I dropped it probably before I should have, because it was just so old. This song probably belongs a bit higher on the countdown, but then again a 14-week climb to the top 20 is a very strong chart run even if it couldn't make it any further than that. And it definitely performed better on my chart than on the real charts! Either way, can we just talk about those epic harmonies in the chorus??!!!!?! No I ain't afraid of dying, But what scares me to death Is meeting Jesus With whiskey on my breath.

126. "Oughta Miss Me By Now" - Mark Chesnutt Peak: 22 Total Points: 251 Certification: None
This song is like a blast of nostalgia straight from the '90s!!! Unfortunately I am not the biggest fan of Mark's squeaky old-man voice. Of all the popular '90s male artists, he is one of the ones with whom I am least familiar. However, he must be really good at picking songs, because almost everything I have heard from him I have loved despite not being the biggest fan of his voice. This song proves that he's still got it, because it is catchy and clever. But I can't help but wonder what it would have sounded like if George Strait had recorded it Oh my goodness, I would be in hog heaven! Tracy Lawrence would be great for this song too. Unfortunately this song ran into poor timing with chart clog. When the 21 songs above it were literally all songs I liked better, it was pretty easy for me to start dropping this song. It probably should have done better, but oh well. Either way, this song even existing in 2016 is a huge victory for fans of this neo-traditional sound that is so rare these days! I love the production more every time I hear this! I see her light in the window again. I drive by but I can't go in. She's got her space, I've got my pride

125. "Parachute" - Chris Stapleton Peak: 25 Total Points: 252 Certification: None
Chris Stapleton makes his grand entrance on the countdown with his latest single, "Parachute". This song had a really weird chart run. It climbed veeeeeeeeerrrry slowly into the top 25, and then just hit a wall. I kept waiting for myself to fall in love with it, because everyone else loves this song, but that moment never came. This song is pretty good, but for some reason there is just a slight disconnect between my personal preferences and Chris Stapleton's sound. Despite everyone else's love for him, and my usual love for neo-traditional music, he just misses the mark somewhere. Maybe it's the way his voice sounds. I know he is a fantastic vocalist, but I've decided I honestly think he sounds like he's screaming on his higher notes. Top it off with not liking his vibrato, and that's the nail in the coffin. I still want to give his album a listen in full, but despite Chris' talent he is just somebody who I am never in the mood to listen to.
Sun comes up and goes back down, And falling feels like flying till you hit the ground.

124. "Goin' Goin' Gone" - George Strait Peak: 21 (so far) Total Points: 260 Certification: NoneHow about a 3rd neo-traditional song in a row??? Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce KING GEORGE! My favorite male vocalist!!! Not that anybody knows that, because I talk about Martina and other female vocalists so much... His latest single, "Goin' Goin' Gone", bows at #124 on the countdown. It is currently on the verge of the top 20 on my chart. That being said, I am hugely disappointed by this single release. This song is below George's normal standard, imo. Yes, he is allowed to have fun and not just release ballads all the time, but in my opinion he has had much better fun songs than this in recent years. The melody to this song just kinda plods, and doesn't quite sound right to me. Like, when I listen to this I feel like I could have arranged the melody slightly differently and made the song much catchier. Which is not a good thing to be feeling while you are listening to a song... But oh well, this song will undoubtedly peak soon, and then I have plenty more George songs to chart from his latest album, as well as his 2 new box set songs George may have stopped touring regularly, but he will not disappear from my chart anytime in the foreseeable future!I put in my forty and they take out way too much. The same old story, same old brown bag homemade lunch.

123. "Promise Me Love" - Reba McEntire Peak: 16 (so far) Total Points: 268 Certification: NoneYAAAASSSSSSS, this song is my favorite on Reba's newest album. And I swear it just gets better with every listen!! And the funny thing is, not a lot of other people even like it, let alone think it's the best song on the album... Lol I guess I'm unique! But I love literally everything about this song. I LOVE the echoey production, and the way Reba's lines are bouncing all over the place throughout the verses. I love the simplicity of the sustained notes in the chorus, before suddenly breaking down into a repeated rhythm ("It's scary, it's freeing, it's wanting and needing," etc.). I love the way Reba cracks her voice slightly at the end every time she says "romance." I love the way the song just continues to have a pulse. It is a perfect driving song. Despite being mid tempo, it never comes close to feeling lethargic. I love the way Reba harmonizes with herself in the epic pre-chorus ("I swear to bring you light.") I also love how there is discrete steel guitar absolutely littered throughout this song. And lots of piano and mandolin as well. Reba continues to be one of my favorite artists, but she outdoes even herself with this song... Flawless production, immaculate vocals. Can't get enough of it.Two roads approaching, which way do we turn? Doesn't much matter cause we've lived and let go and we've learned. Without the map, it's just you and me Leading each other in a world that don't always believe.

122. "That Old Flame" - Don Henley ft. Martina McBride Peak: 16 Total Points: 275 Certification: None
Woah, right on the heels of our first Reba McEntire sighting, we get our first Martina McBride sighting! I can assure you this is the first of many entries for both of those superstar divas :) Unfortunately for Don Henley, this is the only entry for him. This song is wonderful though! The simple back-and-forth between Don as the spurned lover and Martina as the one reinitiating contact is very effective. The beat of the song and rhythmic strumming of the guitars is also a great element. Not to mention that Don and Martina both sound excellent here! Don's voice is definitely aging, but it is aging well. The verses are also pretty low for Martina, so it emphasizes the side of her range that most people typically don't give her credit for, and she knocks it out of the park. I probably should have charted this song longer, but it was one that was already in the top 20 when I made my first chart, and then disappeared pretty quickly as I tried to make room for newer songs (including Martina's own new material at the start of 2016!). If it had charted more it definitely would have been much higher on the countdown, because once a song is in the top 20 it starts accumulating points pretty quickly.
'Cause there is danger in the embers, And you have only yourself to blame If you get burned when you try to rekindle That old flame.

121. "Live Forever" - The Band Perry Peak: 16 Total Points: 283 Certification: NoneThis song is probably the biggest surprise of the countdown so far! But secretly , I am glad this made the list... Hahaha as universally panned as this song was, it has actually grown on me since it's release and quick peak and disappearance... Now it is kind of a guilty pleasure for me... Haha the lyrics are basic as all get out, and the pop direction that this group is heading is still atrocious. I do not have any love for "Comeback Kid", or any of the other songs they have been performing lately (such as "Put Me In The Game". Just EEEWWWW.) But this particular song has somehow seen a huge transformation in the way I interpret and listen to it... Something about the chorus truly feels anthemic now, just like they undoubtedly intended. This song is in a similar boat to Don/Martina's "That Old Flame" in that it also existed on the first edition of my chart, and fell off pretty quickly. I don't really regret letting this one drop when I did, but I am glad that I chose to include it on my chart for at least a few weeks. When this song first came out I avoided it at all costs because of how badly people were talking about it! It sure has come a long way since then!I was feeling a storm, But it wasn't outside. Was feeling a force. I'm electrified. I was feeling my heart. There was thunder inside.

Kill A Word 10/10- An outright amazing song with such an intense melody. But what really makes me love it is Rhiannon Giddens. This woman can sing! She is such a prescence behind the microphone.
There's A Girl 7/10- Nothing outstanding but it is kinda nice and I like Trent Harmon's voice.
You Should Be Here 5/10- Eh I feel no hate or like so a 5
Whiskey On My Breath 10/10 Country music perfection and those amazing harmonies are lovely.
Parachute 8/10 Solid unspectacular but I love the production
Goin Goin Gone 7/10 I like it, but I don't love it
Live Forever 0/10- I'm sorry but this has always left a sour taste in my mouth. Maybe it is the fact that I feel like The Band Perry has no musical direction and all that amazing stuff I saw in "If I Die Young", maybe it is the overbearing pop production. Or for me the reason why I hate this is because of all those interviews and those previews of other new music. These guys were so close to hitting it BIG! Then they blew it on this
Sorry for the rant, there's a lot of hate I have for The Band Perry, but hey at least it was "Live Forever" they released and not "Put Me In The Game Coach".
Excited for the Top 120. Who will be next?

120. "Said No One Ever" - Jana Kramer Peak: 22 Total Points: 289 Certification: None
Another song that most people seemed to hate. However, my opinion about it has always been kinder! I consistently love songs that blatantly say mistruths to highlight the absurdity of what they are saying. (See Martina McBride's "Lies", George Strait's "Ocean Front Property", and I feel like I am missing some other recent examples... Lol) So in other words, this song works for me largely because of the lyrical irony. This song doesn't do it in a subtle way like the above examples, but the tongue-in-cheek approach this song takes is totally intentional and effective, even if it doesn't leave the listener with much thinking to do (unlike the above examples, which are brilliant and subtle pieces of irony). I also find the melody to be pretty catchy! She does say "Said no one ever" a little bit too much. I didn't quite like this song enough to let it rise into the top 20, but it is definitely one that I enjoy listening to.
I wish you'd kiss me less, leave me hanging by a thread, Leave my heart in a mess, said no one ever.

119. "Girl Next Door" - Brandy Clark Peak: 25 Total Points: 291 Certification: None
Brandy Clark is kinda like Chris Stapleton for me. Obviously talented, but overhyped. I almost don't want to listen to her because everyone else loves her so much! Which I know is a ridiculous mindset. But for now she has not been able to break me out of it. That being said, this song is actually pretty good! I love the tongue-in-cheek sass, along with the tough-girl persona. It's like something Terri Clark would release (someone who is also sure to appear on this countdown a few times! Ironically they are both altos, who don't have much of a mainstream career these days but still have quite a bit of hype, and also have the same last name.) This song was a fast burner for me unfortunately, so by the time it left the charts I was pretty tired of it. That's why it peaked and disappeared from my chart in the mid-20s. It probably should have done better, but I was kinda sick of it despite my initial love towards it.
Don't look back, don't turn around, And don't call me when you get bored. Yeah, if you want the girl next door, Then go next door.

118. "Wasted Time" - Keith Urban Peak: 20 Total Points: 293 Certification: None
Keith Urban makes his first appearance on the countdown! As tentative as I am to enjoy his new pop direction, this song actually grew on me quite a bit. I thought it was weak when I first heard it, but after just a couple listens it hooked me and I could tell it was going to be a summertime smash. I am a little surprised he has had so much success with this pop direction, and I thought at first that this song was too un-country, but I have decided it is a good enough song that that doesn't matter. Overall, I really wish Keith would go back to the country rock sound he had back in the mid-2000s, but I did not hate this song like I did Johnx3 earlier this year. I pulled the plug once it hit #20 mostly just so I could chart the much-superior "Blue Ain't Your Color".
Out of nowhere, it slipped away. And the ropes by the river hang silently, And the town that we knew ain't nothing like it used to be.

I couldn't help but notice you ignored Don/Martina, Mark, and the God-Queen Reba ;) Hahaha love the analyses though, as usual! I am not surprised with your assessment of TBP. Honestly, I am pretty sick and tired of them right now too. Their whole image shift has been completely sickening to me. But for some reason "Live Forever" stopped being bad a few months ago! I don't even know what happened. I ignored them because I really haven't heard anybof them. I'm just assessing the songs I am 100% familiar with and have formed a full opinion on. Sorry😔 If only someone had posted videos or links to where you could listen to the songs you don't know. Oh wait.

117. "Blue Ain't Your Color" - Keith Urban Peak: 19 (so far) Total Points: 295 Certification: None
Speak of the Devil, "Blue Ain't Your Color" makes an appearance just ahead of its predecessor! "Wasted Time" had me bemoaning Keith's recent pop direction, but "Blue Ain't Your Color" does not elicit the same complaints from me. Yes I preferred his older sound, but BAYC has a classy subdued sound to it. It does not sound out of place in his career the way "Johnx3" and "Wasted Time" do, in my opinion. It is by far my favorite hit off of Ripcord so far. It is already ahead of its 2 predecessors ("Wasted Time" and "Break On Me") in terms of a peak, but this one is not even close to being done, while the previous 2 ran out of steam right around top 20. I don't know yet whether or not it will hit #1, but it might be the first contender for the top 10 that Keith has had in the history of my chart!
But I just, I don’t understand How another man Can take your sun And turn it ice cold.
