116. "A Few More Cowboys" - Toby Keith Peak: 26 Total Points: 296 Certification: NoneToby Keith's latest song lands at #116 on the countdown. This song had such an unusual chart run. It spent 20 weeks on the chart, and only peaked at #26. That means it was moving suuuuper slow, since 20 weeks is a pretty standard run on my chart, and songs have been known to make it all the way to #1 in a similar amount of time. The biggest issue with this song is that there is just no hype around Toby Keith right now. I absolutely loved him in the '90s and '00s, but in recent years I am just over him. I've been thinking for years he needs to just stop releasing drinking songs, but now this song came out and my excitement did not grow. I LIKE it, of course, otherwise it would not have held on for 20 weeks. But it never quite escalated past liking to be a song that I love, or ever go out of my way to listen to. It really is a shame that Toby Keith is losing relevance with country radio, but I honestly feel like his disappearance from radio has also been accompanied by a dropoff in quality... This song is okay, but it is just kinda bland. If the White House was in Texas, Man, we'd get a straighter answer.

Out of the 5 songs tonight I'll keep it brief
Said No One Ever 0/10. Songs that repeat stuff like Jana Kramer did annoy me so much. I was never shocked when this killed her momentum.
Girl Next Door 8/10 An overall great song, although the production can be tuned back a little
Wasted Time 2/10 Outside of the electronic Banjo solo, this does absolutely nothing for me and I expect a lot better out of Keith Urban or at least consistency like in the 2000s.
Blue Ain't Your Color 1/10 I hate the lyrics with a seething passion that come off sleazy too me. Sorry, Keith Urban solid vocals are the only thing that save this from pure bottom
Beautiful Stranger 6/10 I like it enough but overall I did find this a little forgetful. But still enough for a positive score.

Favorite song of the night: "Blue Ain't Your Color." I agree it's not classic Keith but it's miles better than singles #1, #3 and most of the Ripcord album, imo. 'Blue' is easily one of the catchiest songs to be released all year, thus becoming one of my top five favorites.

Finally, a big update comin', y'all!!
115. "Die A Happy Man" - Thomas Rhett Peak: 18 Total Points: 297 Certification: None
As much as overplay killed this song for me, it actually is a really good song. I very much enjoyed it when it first came out! And then it burnt on me very quickly because I don't really like Thomas Rhett as an artist and this song became unescapable in pop culture. It is also not nearly as good as Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud", which everyone compares it to, but it is still a very sweet song. Some might find it cheesy, but cheesy is usually alright by me when it comes to love songs! Now if only Thomas Rhett would release more songs of this quality...
You're a saint, you're a Goddess. The cutest, the hottest, A masterpiece. It's too good to be true. Nothing better than you In my wildest dreams.

114. "You Make It Look So Good" - Thompson Square Peak: 25 Total Points: 303 Certification: Gold
Thompson Square make a very strong comeback with this song, quality-wise! This song has kinda been given the shaft every step of the way, unfortunately, even on my chart. It flopped on country radio, and then on my chart it succumbed to chart clog at #25. It definitely deserved to do better. It racked up a lot of points along the way though, because this is the first song on the countdown to go Gold (meaning it broke 300 points)! That is usually an honor that songs do not reach until they are in the top 20, just because points accumulate relatively slowly before that benchmark. I am glad that this song managed to do at least that, because I feel kinda bad for pulling it before the top 20.
And I never thought I'd let Anyone ever get close enough To make me fall in love, But ooh, you make it look so good.

113. "A Little More Summertime" - Jason Aldean Peak: 20 (So far...) Total Points: 319 Certification: Gold
This song was an absolute shock to me this year. A good song from Jason Aldean??!!!?!?!!!?!!? I just about shat a brick with surprise. As somebody who wouldn't pay 25 cents to see Jason Aldean live because he is pretty much THE epitome of the entire awful bro country movement, I was not expecting this. Jason has been pretty consistent throughout his career about releasing gems between his regular piles of garbage, but that trend seemed to be decreasing lately. His songs have not been garbage for awhile, but they haven't been gems either. He kinda found a middle ground and has been releasing piles of fluffy nothing for a few years. But that trend seems to be changing with his new album! I haven't listened to it, because obviously I don't ever want to make Jason a priority, but so far this song has been great, and the newly announced single "Any Ol' Barstool" is awesome as well! This will be Jason's only single on the countdown, but if he continues with this trend he will probably have multiple songs on the 2017 countdown, and I will be glad to reward him with that when he is actually releasing quality music.
I brace myself against the cold And let her memory take hold. Stirring that old fire up, As if I don't miss her enough.

112. "Are You Ready For The Country" - Hank Williams, Jr. ft. Eric Church Peak: 15 Total Points: 322 Certification: Gold
I probably held onto this song way too long, considering I am not actually really a fan of Hank Williams, Jr... This song definitely benefitted from my initial excitement surrounding the Nash Icon label, and the fact that they had just signed Martina and Reba. I thought that a label full of veteran artists was an awesome idea, and I was super hyped to support every single one of them with their new music when my chart first started. So Hank made it to the top 15 because there was a lot of hype, plus this song does have an awesome throwback sound to it. The fiddle tricked me into thinking I liked this song more than I do, so even though I started getting tired of it before it even entered the top 20, I kept pushing it up to #15. Oh well, it is still a pretty good song, and it sounds like Hank and Eric are having fun, so I still like this. Just not sure it would make it all the way up to #15 if I did it all over again.

111. "We Went" - Randy Houser Peak: 21 Total Points: 332 Certification: Gold
Yikes, I honestly forgot about this song... And I must admit I am disappointed it even made the countdown. I held onto this song up to #21, but I just could not bring myself to move it up any higher. This song was riding some serious hype after I loved all 4 singles from Randy's previous album era, so I wanted to think I liked this more than I did. I still have quite a bit of good will towards Randy, but just like Dierks Bentley he is disappointing me with his latest music after how strong his last era was. I think Randy has an excellent voice, so I really hope he stops wasting it on weak material with his next album... I REALLY want to support him, but that will be up to him and which direction he chooses to go in the future.
Didn’t take long, just a couple of songs. You know it’s last call when the law comes walking in.

110. "Love Triangle" - RaeLynn Peak: 23 (So far...) Total Points: 337 Certification: Gold
RaeLynn lands at #110 with her current hit. This song is a very special song! I love songs like this, with such a personal meaning for the artist. RaeLynn pours everything she's got into this song, because it is a description of her parents' divorce and what it was like for her growing up. I have never been the biggest fan of her voice, but this song is really good regardless. I would even go so far as to say that she sounds good singing it! Although let's be real, this song is so good that anyone would sound great with it. This song has been somewhat lethargic on my chart so far, because I have been getting tired of this song just from hearing it on the radio, but hearing it crisply and clearly now on Spotify while I type this I am falling in love with it like never before!
Some mommas and daddies Are loving in a straight line. Take forever to heart, And then take a long, sweet ride. But some mommas and daddies Let their heart strings tear and tangle. And some of us get stuck In a love triangle.

109. "Better Off" - Sara Evans ft. Vince Gill Peak: 16 (So far...) Total Points: 339 Certification: Gold
And now we have our first Sara Evans sighting! I LOVE this woman. Her voice is so perfect, and it is at its absolute best when tackling neo-traditional country music such as this. Vince Gill's collaboration credit on this song is kinda unnecessary tbh, except for the exposed note at the beginning of the last chorus. This song is such an epic song to show of Sara's range though. Her low voice in the verses is so strong, steady, and clear. Then her voice in the chorus is so smooth when she suddenly jumps high. This is also one of those songs that hooks you in and makes you want to sing along. And how about that rocking electric guitar in the fadeout of the song?? Sara is on her way to having a big hit on her hands with this. Look for it to place much higher on the 2017 year-end chart!
If he's gonna go, let him go. If he wants to leave, let him leave. If he's gonna walk, he's gonna walk. He'll only leave you better off.

108. "Break On Me" - Keith Urban Peak: 19 Total Points: 348 Certification: Gold
Another very solid hit from Keith Urban despite my dislike of his current sound. He is always excellent at ballads, and this one is no exception. The lyrics to this song are quite strong, and the hook is well-done in my opinion. The sound is still pretty poppy, but not too much so that it sounds out of place on country radio or among the rest of Keith's catalog. I started getting just a liiiiittle bit tired of this when it was on the radio, but I am completely over that slight fatigue now. I never really hear this song anymore though, despite it being a recent hit, but I wish I did. I love Keith's voice on this, and I also love the background vocal transitions (the "ooo ah" parts).
There'll be days your heart don't wanna beat. You pray more than you breathe, And you just wanna fall to pieces. And nights with two AM calls, Where dreams become walls, And you just need a break. Break on me.

107. "I'm Comin' Over" - Chris Young Peak: 1 (1 week) Total Points: 355 Certification: Gold
Chris Young is one of the most talented male vocalists in all of country music. He makes his grand entrance on the countdown just outside the top 100 with the lead single off his newest album, "I'm Comin' Over". This song is SO good! I love everything about it. The only problem is that it was such a huge hit that I am completely and totally burnt out on it. It also came out in May of 2015, so it is a little old for this countdown. It hit #1 in the 3rd week of my chart, and then disappeared. So unfortunately this is a song that never got to reach its full potential because the majority of its chart run was cut off. But at least it still hit #1, and was able to accumulate enough points to be certified Gold! Also, I just have to say, I love the drums in the 2nd verse, after the 1st chorus. That one little touch gave the song so much extra character in my opinion!
We say goodbye, see you around. We turn our backs then turn back around. We break up, we make up and we make love. We can’t seem to let go, girl.

106. "Little Bit Of You" - Chase Bryant Peak: 19 Total Points: 356 Certification: Gold
I take a long time to warm up to new artists, but I enjoy Chase Bryant quite a bit so far. This song was on the radio for WAAAAAAY TOO LONG, unfortunately, so everyone started getting pretty sick of it, myself included. But all-in-all, I think it is still a pretty good song. Not as good as his debut, "Take It On Back", but still pretty good. This guy can sing, and his songs are actually pretty country-sounding compared to the usual new male artist's music. When this song came out I was slightly annoyed by it because it was not as good as his debut, but it actually grew on me a lot before it started wearing on me again. The melody is very strong, if you ask me! I know this song is not a big favorite among a lot of people, but I don't think you could legitimately represent 2016 in country music without including this song.
I could use a little bit of your sweet kiss, Your lips, on a night like this. I don't wanna be lonely with the stars all out. Need you here to help me, or I might lose count.

105. "Wasn't That Drunk" - Josh Abbott Band ft. Carly Pearce Peak: 18 Total Points: 356 Certification: Gold
This song is a success story for all obscure songs everywhere. As I mentioned previously, I take a super long time to warm up to new acts. Well, this band may not be new, but the fact that they are not exactly a mainstream band makes them fairly unique among other artists on this countdown because I am less likely to seek them out when they release new material. Well, I listened to this song when it came out because everyone was hyping it up, and I realized that they were absolutely right. This song is awesome!! Both the lead singer and Carly Pearce deliver perfect vocal performances. But I would say that the best part of the whole song is the lyrics. The fact that this also managed to make a dent on the Billboard charts is also pretty incredible, making this a success story for traditional country everywhere.
I was tipsy when you kissed me, But that ain't why I kissed you back.

104. "Country Nation" - Brad Paisley Peak: 17 Total Points: 360 Certification: Gold
I love Brad Paisley, but this song is just a tad boring. It fell off the chart after peaking #17 because I just kinda got tired of it. There is nothing WRONG with it. It has great production, and strong vocals. I do tend to dislike lyrics that are super specific, so all the shoutouts to specific sports teams and such in this song does turn me off a little bit. But the message is strong, and I love all the fiddle! I am not surprised this song stalled on country radio just outside the top 10, because everything about it is just kinda boring despite being good. I tend to like Brad most when he has a witty edge to him, which is woefully absent from this song.
We crank up the same songs Friday night On two thousand country stations. Yeah, we're one big country nation, that's right.

103. "Gonna" - Blake Shelton Peak: 2 Total Points: 373 Certification: Gold
This was the final hit from Blake's last album era, which as a whole I enjoyed more than his current era. This was the weakest single he released from that album. There is something about this song that I just can't help but enjoy though! It is a little old; it was only on my chart for 8 weeks when I started my chart, so it had the majority of its chart run cut off. It did benefit from how soft my chart was at the beginning though, which helped this song climb all the way up to #2. It probably wouldn't have peaked that high under normal circumstances. "Gonna" is a bit of a guilty pleasure though, so I probably would have still charted it somewhere in the top 10! (His 2 singles since this song was out have barely flirted with the top 40 on my chart, if that helps you understand how much I think his quality has gone down between the two album eras... Lol)
Love ya all night long Till the crickets stop chirpin'. Girl I ain't just flirtin'; I'm certain.
Lol there are not really any good lyrics to this song either...

102. "Castaway" - Zac Brown Band Peak: 23 Total Points: 374 Certification: Gold
Zac Brown Band has had a fairly quiet 2016, so this is only one of 2 singles that they had out in 2016. I am not the biggest fan of this song because it is just kinda weird, although it does have a breezy feel-good vibe that is pretty good. But their newest album doesn't have much left on it that would work on country radio, so this song was probably one of the best options for them to release despite it being a weird song. The thing I am consistently impressed with with this band is the musicality and overall talent of all the members. In basically everything ZBB releases, they sound super tight. As a musician myself, I can tell how unbelievably talented these guys are every time I hear them. That is no different with this song. The musicianship is top notch, even if it is slightly different-sounding.
Time flies by and soon we’ll be older. It’s better to live in the moment Than stuck in the past, Fast asleep as the world passes by.

101. "I Love This Life" - LoCash Peak: 13 Total Points: 377 Certification: GoldJust missing out on the top 100 is LoCash. This song is infectious!! I don't really like the fake-sounding Florida Georgia Line-like twang in the verses, but the chorus is SO GOOD that I totally forgive the verses. In fact, when I heard this on the radio regularly, I didn't even notice the twang in the verses anymore after awhile. There's not much to celebrate about the lyrics to this song either, but that is okay. Not every song needs to be a cathartic purging of emotions that slams the listener right in the gut (contrary to what you may think I believe given my tastes). This song celebrates the good things in life, has fun doing it, and is just fine with me! It sounds genuine, and the lyrics are not BAD despite being nothing special. I probably would have let this song into the top 10 if I could do it again. But it also came out before I started my chart, so it was a song that I put on my chart just to have something to pull after a few weeks to make room for other songs.I love that ragged old barn that my grandpa made. It was my whole world back in my innocent days. I love that little white church, out on 109. It’s where I hit my knees and thank the Lord for this life of mine.
HUGE update today, guys! 15 songs (I missed 2 days, plus then today's update). Which finishes up the first 50! Tomorrow we enter the top 100 :) SO MANY great songs ahead!!! Lovely seeing "You Make It Look So Good," "Love Triangle," "Better Off," and "I'm Comin' Over" in this set! The part about you falling more in love with "Love Triangle" also has me optimistic about its chances on your chart going into 2017. I really enjoy the ones from Chase Bryant and Blake Shelton, too. "Gonna" is definitely a guilty pleasure for me as well. The melody of that song is SO strong. I just heard it on the radio randomly a few days ago and it really reminded me just how catchy it is. And I'm with you on the drop-off in quality after his last album. I really liked his last era and it became my one and only Blake Shelton album purchase to date, but the singles from If I'm Honest certainly haven't given me a reason to make it 2.

If you ever get a wild hair and decide to purchase another Blake album, I would strongly recommend either of his first 2. In fact, Blake Shelton's Barn And Grill is one of the strongest albums by non-Martina and non-Sara that I have ever heard! Blake is so weird to me, because while I have liked his music more often than not through the years, the difference in quality between his early years and his later years is absolutely astounding. It is literally like they are 2 completely different artists. Pre-superstardom and during-superstardom Blakes. I keep hoping that one day he will release an album with at least one song remotely close to the quality of "Austin", "Goodbye Time", "The Baby", etc, but so far I don't see that happening... Maybe post-superstardom Blake will be yet a 3rd new artist we have yet to meet!

Time for my assessment on all the songs I have heard, and mann there is a lot. Die A Happy Man 7/10- In all honesty when Thomas Rhett tries to make a love song for his wife the results aren't bad. I never want to hear this on the radio, but I don't mind it. You Make It Look So Good 5/10- This song is allright the sentiment is there but the production is so sterile and faceless it's amazing A Little More Summertime 5/10- Meh Are You Ready for the Country 6/10- I happen to be biased for everything Eric Church does. That being said I can't stand Hank Williams Jr so they kinda balance each other out We Went 0/10- Randy Houser is a complete sellout. Moving on Love Triangle 8/10- Ok this would be a 10/10 if it wasn't for the fact that I can't stand Raelynn's vocals. They are better here but still. Excellently written and produced. Break On Me 3/10- Way too sleepy and boring to really care about I'm Coming Over 5/10- Like with everything on Chris Young's latest album. Really sung well but boring lyrics and a sterile production dooms this from the start Little Bit of You 2/10- I don't get this guys appeal. Yeah he is talented but his lyrics and production are just awful. The production isn't as bad as another song. But this song peaking in the Top 5 forever made me hate this. Wasn't That Drunk 7/10- I like it enough Country Nation 6/10- Meh Gonna 7/10- I echo everything that .indulgecountry said Castaway 8/10- Biggest guilty pleasure besides LoCash. Such an earworm Love This Life 10/10- This song is my jam! I love everything about this. This is the type of a song where I don't care that it's not deep at all. These guys know how to get a hook and more importantly give a hook that I will gladly sing along too. The Top 100 and still no sign of Kelsea Ballerini or much Martina McBride and Reba. You also can't rule out Carrie Underwood and Maren Morris. Who will be on top nobody knows. Excited for the Top 100!!

Okay, so this was such a big update that I missed "Die a Happy Man" and "You Make It Look So Good" until .indulgecountry mentioned the latter and I had to scroll back up. As the countdown continues, it gets better. I'm always surprised to see where certain songs have landed. Then, I have to remember that a lot of these songs were released during the tail end of 2016 and may end up on your 2017 countdown. "Love Triangle" is such a great song, I agree with you there. And, you and I seem to agree on Chase Bryant and "Little Bit Of You." Heck, even "Room To Breathe" has grown on me since it was released and I recall it sounding pretty atrocious when I first heard it. I really hope Chase sticks around. Can we take a moment and talk more about "Better Off" though? I mean, YAY! It made the countdown. I really wasn't expecting to see it, but it is so deserving. I too feel like Vince's presence isn't all that needed on the song, but that's only a small piece of the song for me. If only "Better Off" were on the Stronger album, she may have performed it live when I saw her open for Rascal Flatts in 2010. She would have slayed the song live.

100. "I Cheated On You" - Terri Clark Peak: 1 (2 week) Total Points: 377 Certification: Gold
Terri Clark kicks off the top 100, with the 4th song to ever go #1 on my chart. She has been one of my favorite artists for a long time, so it comes as no surprise to me that she had a very successful year. This song was her current single when I started my chart, which means that most of its chart run was cut off. This song would have probably been her biggest hit to date if it had a full chart run! As it stands, we can be happy that it even made the top 100, as that is much better than many songs who were on the chart when it first began. Anyway, about the contents of this song, the main thing I like about it is that it is such an unexpected twist. So many cheating songs deal with hating the cheater, leaving the cheater, being forced to stay with the cheater, etc. But in this case, the narrator finds out her man is cheating, and decides to cheat right back to get revenge! That is such an unexpected twist on a cheating song, from my experience, and honestly only someone like Terri Clark could pull a song like this off without coming across as sleazy and spiteful. She effectively conveys the subtle humor behind the hook, yet still has it seem serious at the same time. This would have fit right in on any of her '90s albums, and probably would have been a pretty big hit back when radio would still play her!
It didn't mean a thing, You can take my word. I was just drunk. That's easier said than heard, Ain't it baby?

99. "Jim And Jack And Hank" - Alan Jackson Peak: 4 Total Points: 384 Certification: Gold
I had almost forgotten how great this song was! Alan Jackson has always been a very consistent artist, and this song was a very welcome comeback from him. The best part for me is probably how humorous it is. There's the part where the dog (named Chloe, haha) "started barking like a tank." Then he called his dad, who has no compassion, saying, "Son, you just woke me from my nap." :kii: Hahaha I love it! In fact, this is probably the funniest song on the entire countdown. And the thing is, very few artists could pull off a song like this. The main character is a total brick-head, with no awareness of his lady's perspective. It is honestly no wonder she is leaving him, listening to the things he says, and the way his father reacts! Clearly it's a toxic family that she will be better off without. And yet you don't hate the narrator, because Alan is just so good at selling the unlikeable character. The song is totally like a comedy breakup, where the man is super flawed, but you just can't help but feel bad for him and feel some resentment towards the lady, despite the fact that if it were looked at subjectively you would totally be on her side. Anyway, I feel like I have been rambling, so I will stop now. This song is awesome, and only comes in so low because it also existed on my first chart, meaning most of its run got cut off.
Well now you left screaming and your tires screeching, That little dog right in your lap. I have become a little sad and I called up my old dad. He said, "Son, you just woke me from my nap." I told him you had left me. He said, "Now son, don’t you hate me. You know exactly what I think. You know you’re better off, You can fish and you can golf. You still got Jim and Jack and Hank."

98. "Pain Killer" - Little Big Town Peak: 14 Total Points: 386 Certification: Gold
Little Big Town make their second and final appearance on the countdown with the title track from their last album. This song was not exactly a smash hit, but it manages to enter the top 100 because it had a full chart run up to #14, while most of the bigger hits around it didn't have the beginning of their chart runs due to the timing when I started my chart. I am not a huge fan of this song, but it was catchy enough to hang on into the top 20. Nothing about it really stands out to me, and it is pretty forgettable. The lyrics and melody are both kinda bland. Karen has a fantastic voice, which helps this song tremendously.

97. "Road Less Traveled" - Lauren Alaina Peak: 18 (So far...) Total Points: 387 Certification: Gold
Lauren Alaina is a superstar waiting to happen. Her voice is just so strong! This song is her current hit, and so far it has entered my top 20 and shows no signs of slowing down. It will undoubtedly do much better in 2017! This song is pretty personal for her, kinda like RaeLynn's earlier, so I am thrilled to see it being successful so far on real country radio. It is the type of motivational inspiration song that never fails to resonate with me, but what is truly great is the melody. When she takes off into the chorus it sounds fierce! It almost reminds me of a Katy Perry song, oddly enough. Either way it is wonderful, and I hope it continues to be heard by new people and bringing her new fans.

96. "Dirty Laundry" - Carrie Underwood Peak: 12 (So far...) Total Points: 396 Certification: GoldYay, Carrie Underwood makes her first appearance on the countdown! Here she is with her current single, "Dirty Laundry". This song is pretty good, although to be honest it has not grown on me nearly as quickly as the rest of her singles this era have. I am glad this got to be a single because it is pretty much universally praised, but it was actually never one of my top choices on her album. I love the sass and the imagery, but for some reason it still leaves something to be desired for me. Either way, Carrie is set up to have a monster 2017, and this song is leading the charge as the song that will still be charting when the new year begins! Since her album era will likely end and there are still a handful of songs I want to chart, we can probably look forward to her having a flurry of releases the way Sara Evans and Maddie & Tae have had this year! That lipstick on your collar, well, it ain't my shade of pink. And I can tell by the smell of that perfume, it's like forty dollars too cheap. And there's a little wine stain on the pocket of your white cotton thread. Well, you drink beer and whiskey, boy, and you know I don't drink red.
