THIS is why I love Billboard: "...solo female since Rihanna's "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris...." Solo artists are referred to as such if they normally record that way

Hearing these stories about younger people and their perceptions of musicians is fascinating. A 24 year old's perception of 1995 is the same as mine of 1985... I'm looking at the number one singles from that time and I'm realizing if anyone asked me who Paul Young, John Parr, Ready for the World, Jan Hammer, Marilyn Martin, Mr. Mister, or Starship was, I'd have no idea, even though as I look at the songs a few of them I know of (just didn't know the artist). But most of those are not artists who had are in the same league as Madonna, Mariah, etc... I guess early 80s equivalents might be artists like Lionel Richie, Phil Collins, Sting/Police?

But teenagers do know older songs, even songs from before they were born. If they don't know Mariah's then that's related to how her songs have aged and not to teenagers themselves. I can tell you a lot of teens know Michael Jackson's or Beatles' songs. Or Lose Yourself, Baby one more time, Macarena or Don't Stop Believing. Teenagers don't know One Sweet Day mostly because it's not really a popular song anymore. Disagree. A couple things, we were talking about Mariah, not the Beatles. Beatles get exposure to this day. Walk into a music store now and you will find them sitting on the new release shelf. You could probably find a teenager who knows all the Mariah songs as well as you do. I don't disagree. I am saying the popularity and opinion of 'One Sweet Day' will differ by age groups. Teenagers will give a different answer than someone who was alive during the songs heyday. "Teenagers will give a different answer than someone who was alive during the songs heyday." I agree with that. Older people will be way more likely to remember this song than younger people. And that is due to the fact the song has lost its relevance and hasn't really aged well. Beatles get exposure to this day because they're still relevant and have aged well. Teenagers might not know any Whitney Houston song but they know I Will Always Love You because it's still an extremely popular song. One Sweet Day is not a popular song anymore, therefore not that many people will know it.

Can someone please explain me why is Out of The Woods flopping? I mean, this song is so much better than Wildest Dreams (at least 5 million of 1989 was already sold when WD was released as new single too), the video is awesome, the lyric is about Harry Styles who is very famous... I started to believe that OOTW won't surpass its peak #18, just don't understand why. Wasn't it sent to radio?

Billboard really confuses me sometimes..
Don't fell from #18 to #21, but with a bullet.. Watch Me stayed at #19 with no bullet..
How does this make any sense?

To see this week's chart, go back to last week's chart on the Hot 100 page and type the date manually (since last week's date was 02, this week would be 16) The chart actually updated in the past few minutes anyway, but if you want to see them earlier this is how you do it.

I think this kind of thing happens in weeks when there aren't many songs showing actual point gains overall. Songs showing point gains within a metric get a bullet regardless of overall point loss. This might explain why Don't got a bullet and Watch Me didn't.

What are the recurrent rules for AC? A lot of songs which were below their top 10 peaks after 20 weeks re-entered on the Billboard chart this week (Sugar, Want To Want Me, Honey I'm Good, Style)

I know it may be a bit too early to talk about this, but does anyone know what could possibly be Justin Bieber's next single?
I really hope his next single is "I'll Show You", but if he won't release that, then I go with my second pick: "No Pressure". But I still want "I'll Show You"

Why are people so confident "WWWY" will challenge for #1? It isn't really taking off in downloads despite a lot of exposure via performances and increasing airplay. It's climbing iTunes now in response to airplay, with plenty of room to grow there. Her performances had more impact on her album sales - although "When We Were Young" peaked at #3 on iTunes on album release and has stuck around a while. It's yet to go to streaming or have a video released - both those things happening would put it quite easily in contention for #1. Wasn't "Love Yourself" higher in downloads with less airplay? "WWWY" isn't top 20 yet. "LY" is also rising better at radio right now. Obviously having points from streaming would help "WWWY," but I'm hesitant on saying it's a true challenger for #1 at this point.

On the subject of big hits and recurrent life, of the pop female vets (who debuted pre-2000), Madonna enjoys the most recurrent play when all formats are taken into account. She has a pretty staggering showing at AC. When is the last time we got recurrent info for AC and other formats? Is it posted here somewhere?

I started to believe that OOTW won't surpass its peak #18, just don't understand why. Wasn't it sent to radio? I don't see it flopping - not now, nor when all is said an done. While the video premiere on NYE was better than nothing... it's not exactly the grammys or even the AMAs... or even a lesser awards show. Radio JUST started spinning it now that the holiday freeze is over. Given that it's the 6th single, it's going to need radio exposure before it catches on, as most fans already own a copy of it and/or the album. Personally, I think it was the smartest choice for a single this late in the era. While it may be a risk for several reasons, it's a risk worth taking. Taylor fatigue is probably a factor, but radio isn't going to not play it. Plus, its unadulterated 80s (and standout, imo) production really summarizes the sound/theme of the album... and once you hear it a few times, it's got you by the balls. Whether it ends up with a new peak on the Hot 100 - it's too soon to tell. But nothing wrong with a top 20 and continued radio exposure to keep the album on the charts. That's my take and I'm sticking to it.

Speaking on the the topic of what songs teenagers know I was in shock a few years back when I worked with a 17 year old and the only songs she knew by Whitney were "I Will Always Love You" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".

It's still a cool rare thing to happen even if it's happened 3 times in the past year. Another way of looking at this
29 #1's since 8/16/92 that have ran 10 or more weeks Those 29 #1's account for 346 weeks or over 6 and half years out of a possible 23 and a half years (28%)
or on average 1 out of every 3 or 4 weeks there is a song that will stay on top for 10 weeks.
Not quite so rare at this point
Lol! I take it back. It happens too much!

Oh wait, the second one is the one that goes "...with somebody to love me", right? I think I heard of it because of the Natalie La Rose song "Somebody"

Oh gawd. Utterly ridiculous. I knew someone would act a fool and feed into this fake "I don't know her" crap. Sorry, don't buy it for a half a second. If you need attention, go to a different thread. Or go on a date. Read a book. Listen to these legendary artists you "don't know." But this nonsense is totally irrelevant to the current H100 thread.
Cute stories about interviewing friends or whoever, too - but I don't buy those either. It's all cringe worthy. Trolling, hating and/or stanning in disguise, that's all it is. "Like, my friend said that she didn't know who Madonna was, but totally knew Mariah... soooo Mariah is clearly more relevant... like omg! LOL!"
Make it stop. All of this crap sounds so ignorant. Especially as a music fan on a music board. I don't care how old you are or when you were born or what music you listen to.

It might be hard to believe but there are people who don't know different music legends. Best thing to do would be to educate him/her, not attack them.
