Given that sales counted so much in the previous several years, I don't think there's been a #1 for 8+ weeks with relatively low sales, nor would it have been possible. Interestingly though, I can think of another Rihanna #1 with relatively low sales that was on top for a while: Rude Boy, which was #1 for 5 weeks. It's sales might not have even cracked 3 million, which was low for back then. It only ranked #28 in sales year-end, but was able to stay on top because of its higher airplay, but both diffused pretty quickly I guess.

I'm not sure of its total sales, but I know that "See You Again" was number 1 while number 10 on digital sales last year. We Belong Together was even lower than that (like 18 or something) at some point during its last couple of weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. But that was in a different chart era though At least "WBT" was selling albums, though, so the relatively low downloads didn't mean much in terms of its popularity. |
